Japan map of rectangular blocks
The graph below shows the number of traffic accident fatalities (age 65 and over) per 100,000 people by prefecture in 2022. As shown in the legend at the top right of the graph, the darker the red color, the higher the number of deaths, so just by looking at it you can see that the number of deaths is higher in the four prefectures of the Shikoku region compared to other prefectures.

*Data source: National Police Agency Road traffic statistics
Originally, it should be shown on a proper map of Japan, but you can also grasp the general positional relationship with a map that shows each prefecture as a rectangle. Although it is a simplified map, it is often used in news and articles because it is a simple map.
A compact map of Japan (new feature in JMP 17)
When displaying a map of Japan on a horizontal screen such as a TV or computer, if you display the vertical screen (latitude) from Hokkaido to Okinawa, it will become smaller. For this reason, you often see maps that show only Okinawa Prefecture in a different location in the Sea of Japan or the Pacific Ocean.
In JMP, you can use the Graph Builder to create a column indicating prefectures (with values such as "Hokkaido" and "Aomori Prefecture" entered as values) in a data table. [Map shape] By specifying , you can draw a map of Japan like the one below.

With the latest version "JMP 17", you can create a compact map for Japan by following the steps below.
- Double-click the axis (either the X or Y axis).
- In the axis settings window, select [Japan] in compact map mode as shown below, check [Okinawa], and also check [Show merge border].

With this setting, Okinawa Prefecture will be moved to the Pacific Ocean side. Since I checked Show inset border, Okinawa is distinguished by surrounding it with a dotted line.

A rectangular block map of Japan using a custom map file
JMP allows you to create your own maps by defining the coordinates of each block. Therefore, I created a rectangular block map of Japan and would like to share it with you.
The attached file ``Status of traffic accidents per 100,000 people by prefecture (2022).jmp'' records the number of traffic accidents, deaths, and injuries per 100,000 people for each prefecture. Here are the steps to create a rectangular block map using JMP using this data.
1.Download the attached files "JA-Rectangle1-Name.jmp" and "JA-Rectangle1-XY.jmp" and save them both in the following location.
Windows : C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\SAS\JMP\Maps
(If you are using JMP Pro, replace "JMP" above with "JMP Pro".)
MacOS : /Users//Library/Application Support/JMP/Maps
*If there is no "Maps" folder in the corresponding folder, create a folder and then save.
2. Select the column ``Prefecture'' in ``Traffic accident occurrence status per 100,000 population by prefecture (2022).jmp''. Columns > Column Information Choose.
3.From [Column properties] on the bottom left [Role of map] and use the following as the shape name:
Map name data table : Specify the location where you saved "JA-Rectangle1-Name.jmp" earlier.
Shape definition columns : Select "Name".

The shape definition columns are associated with the "analysis data table" and the "〇〇-Name table" as shown below.
The second column "Name" of "JA-Rectangle1-Name.jmp" takes values such as Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, etc., and the third column "Name2" takes values such as Aomori Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture. The column "Prefecture" in this analysis data has values entered in the former format, so "Name" is specified.

Four. Start "Graph Builder" and select "Prefecture" at the bottom left. [Map shape] In the zone of [color] drop it in the zone.

If you find it useful, please try using it.
