Japan map of rectangular blocks
The graph below shows the number of traffic accident fatalities (aged 65 and over) per 100,000 population by prefecture in 2022. As the legend in the upper right corner of the graph shows, the darker the red color, the higher the number of deaths, so you can see at a glance that the four prefectures in the Shikoku region have more deaths than the other prefectures.

*Data source: National Police Agency Road traffic statistics
Originally, it should be shown on a proper map of Japan, but it is possible to grasp the general positional relationship even with a map showing each prefecture as a rectangle. Although it is a simplified map, it is often used in news and articles because it is a simple map.
Compact Map of Japan (New in JMP 17)
When displaying a map of Japan on a horizontal screen such as a TV or computer, if you display the vertical screen (latitude) from Hokkaido to Okinawa, it will become smaller. For this reason, we often see maps that show only Okinawa prefecture in a different position in the Sea of Japan or the Pacific Ocean.
In JMP, in Graph Builder, a column indicating prefectures in the data table (with values such as "Hokkaido" and "Aomori Prefecture") is [Map shape] If you specify , you can draw a map of Japan like the one below.

With the latest version "JMP 17", you can create a compact map for Japan by following the steps below.
- Double-click an axis (either X-axis or Y-axis).
- In the Axis Settings window, select [Japan] in Compact Map Mode, check [Okinawa], and also check [Show Inset Boundaries] as shown below.

This setting moves Okinawa Prefecture to the Pacific Ocean side. Since I checked the Show Inset Boundary, Okinawa is surrounded by a dotted line to distinguish it.

Rectangular block map of Japan using a custom map file
JMP lets you create your own maps by defining the coordinates of each block. Therefore, I created a map of Japan with rectangular blocks, so I would like to share it with you.
The attached file "Traffic Accidents per 100,000 Population by Prefecture (2022).jmp" records the number of traffic accidents, fatalities, and injuries per 100,000 people by prefecture. Using this data, I will show you how to create a rectangular block map in JMP.
1.Download the attached files "JA-Rectangle1-Name.jmp" and "JA-Rectangle1-XY.jmp" and save them in the following locations.
Windows : C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\SAS\JMP\Maps
(If you use JMP Pro, replace "JMP" above with "JMP Pro.")
macOS : /Users//Library/Application Support/JMP/Maps
*If there is no "Maps" folder in the folder, create a folder before saving.
2. Select the column "Prefecture" in "Traffic Accident Rates per 100,000 Population by Prefecture (2022).jmp" Columns > Column Information Choose.
3.From [Column Properties] on the bottom left [Role of map] and have the following as the shape name to use:
map name data table : Specify the location where "JA-Rectangle1-Name.jmp" was saved earlier.
column in shape definition : Select "Name".

The column of the shape definition associates the "analysis data table" with the "XX-Name table" as shown below.
The second column "Name" of "JA-Rectangle1-Name.jmp" takes values such as Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi, and the third column "Name2" takes values such as Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi. For the column "Prefecture" of the analysis data this time, the value is entered in the former format, so "Name" is specified.

Four. Start "Graph Builder" and change "Prefecture" to [Map shape] in the zone, add the column you want to color code (e.g. "Deaths (65+)") to the upper right [colour] zone.

Please use it by all means if it seems to be useful.
