Welcome to the JMP Development Update for May 12, 2023!
We have now reached our freeze date for JMP 18 EA3. EA4 will freeze in a little over a month, and JMP 18 Feature Freeze is about 2 months away on July 21. Please continue to triage your story items in Jira and update the Planned Version field for items that you know you will not get to in the JMP 18 cycle.
I’ve noticed several new feature pages added to the JMP 18 Features section in Confluence in recent weeks. Mia and I very much appreciate you continuing to add and update these important pages! We will have a little over a month before EA4, so if you know you will have some new items coming online for testing by EA customers, check out the JMP 18 Feature page how-to information here before you add your new pages.
Speaking of JMP 18, Tonya Mauldin shared this week’s Beta/Crash report with crashes selected below:

JMP Beta Report - Distribution - Week of 5/12/23 | JMP Live (sas.com)
Thanks very much to Bradley Jones for presenting at the JMP Dev meeting yesterday! He presented a reprise of his award-winning JMP Discovery talk from Sitges titled “A Family of Orthogonal Main Effects Screening Designs for Mixed Level Factors.” As John noted in his comments in the meeting, this work represents yet another innovation from JMP’s first-in-class DOE team. This work was developed in collaboration with Chris Nachtsheim, a Professor at the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Business, and Ryan Lekivetz on the JMP DOE team. If you missed the meeting, you can find the recording here.
As a remember, you can find available recordings from past dev meetings in this shared folder and I maintain a listing of past topics here in Confluence. (Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any problems accessing any of these items.) While I have some other other topics on the dev meeting calendar this month and Audrey has booked several intern sessions in late July/early August, please let me know if you’d like to present in June or July!
Thanks very much to Audrey Shull for sharing this week’s Jira Tip of the Week:
Jira offers a neat way to subscribing to a list that you are interested in, and have it emailed to you on a regular basis. For example, let’s say I want to make sure I’m aware of all the new issues created for the JiraHelp, and I want to get the email on Mon/Wed/Fri afternoon. I can do this by creating my own saved filter showing the list of items (new issues created for JiraHelp in the last 2 days), and then click Details->New subscription. This will allow me to configure the frequency to receive the email notice. I find this pretty convenient, just for my own general awareness.
As you know, in addition to sharing Jira tips, being an Atlassian super-admin and managing JMP’s system/host/web testing groups, Audrey has played the role of JMP Intern Ambassador for many years, and she helps arrange intern-related training and events throughout the summer. This year, Audrey is working with Paul Mastropolo, Beth Evans and former JMP intern Andy Zhou to welcome a record number of JMP summer interns – 24! If you’re interested in seeing some of what the interns will learn this summer, you can find a draft schedule here. All interns will be invited to present at a dev meeting later in the summer so you’ll be sure to hear more about their projects then.

Product Management
- This week, JMP product marketing held a Minitab Competitor Training session hosted by internal JMP people who previously worked for Minitab. (Talk about an inside scoop! :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes: )
Technical Support
- Duane: Another busy week! TS helped with the Novozymes Hackathon event by being available for “office hours” for any participant having JMP questions. They brought us questions pertaining to Model Screening, Mixed Models, Distribution, DOE, Text Explorer, Hardware Accelerated Graphics, Graph Builder, and various other topics. Additionally, we met with Procter & Gamble regarding their installation issues. We found no clear reason why installations are failing on a small percentage of their machines. Thanks to Bob Hickey for attending the meeting as well. We met with Chris Shields to discuss best methods for the Enablement and the Digital Operations groups to work together.
- Here are the TS JMP Live reports and the link to the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.

Development Operations
- Bob: Worked with Paul N. on proper Python integration of files into Windows installer. Added Windows 10/11 log messages in installers. Added code to disallow install for Windows 8 and 8.1 with both 17.2 and 18.0. Released 17.1.1 updaters at special link, with installer validation and release notes. Worked on installer issue with TEMP location folder bug. Attended meeting with P&G to review Windows installer issues with JMP Pro 17 occurring for a subset of users.
- Jim: Working with Paul Nelson on the Python integration on unit test machines. Reported assertion failure and ASAN issues.
- Shannon: Updated feature page Jira queries to match new query that includes the parent Epic – thanks to Audrey Shull and Sarah Sylvestre for working out the details! Added new epic items to serve as containers for several ongoing JMP 18 projects. Added a few new components in JMP Jira and requested JiraBot updates – thanks Myron for updating those! Investigated a few JMP 17.X mystery crashes. Poked around in JMP 17.1 and 18 telemetry data a bit more.
Documentation
- Chris B: Documenting how to update the doc build job (while also working on parameterizing it so it's not such a maintenance issue). Strengths training and 2023 goals. Prep for our intern. Working on a proposal for the two JSL books and the Scripting Index.
- Susan C: Did a Strengths Workshop, was excellent. Caught up with UI string reviews. Working on Quick Start tips for EA 4. Finished JMP 17.1.1 Release Notes and distributed them.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Nick H: Continued investigating an issue in the testing dashboard where test history graphs are not loading on individual tester pages. Was able to determine that the issues seem to be related to a certain date range. Begun in depth unit testing of the new tree box messages that were added by Dan to support his addition of Tree Boxes to application builder. In other dev work I enhanced the Scripting Index example for modal window and begun working on adding reference to Workflow Builder to JMP Starter – this will likely need a couple of new workflow icons to match the ones we see for the other file options in starter.
- Hui: The result of interactive html5 test automation has been posted daily about a month ago. Currently we have 76 test scenarios. The testing framework works nicely and detailed test scenarios can be found here. Thanks to Steve Chen for all the work to get the interactive html5 testing suite up running! Verified bug fixes on HTML5 supports on fonts, sizes, and special characters. Discovered, reported, and suggested JMP/JMP HTML5 issues encountered while verifying fixes, adding testcases to automation, and exploration. Finished SAS training on ‘You’re Vital to SAS Messaging’.
- Lisa: Investigated an EA track regarding the broadcast function of confidence intervals in graph builder and worked on removing/consolidating some statuses in Jira.
- Hunter: Completed JMP 17.1.1 final installer testing, investigated JMP 18 EA 2 track, and still working with CIS staff on a BeyondTrust issue.

Data Discovery
- Evan: Starting some changes to Dispatch to work better with Platform Templates. Filed lots of platform Dispatch use issues, found while researching the new design. Many thanks to Dan Schikore for help on both of these. Started working on the new Sample Data Index with Dave White. Added a telemetry item for non-factory-default Preferences. Began working on transitioning ScriptItemState to its own type, more to come after EA3. Improved performance of Match on strings.
- Dave B: I noticed I could no longer create crash files so I worked with John Schroedl to figure out the problem. More work on row selection for a table box with stacked columns. Tracked down a tech support reported regression with point selection in 3d graphs, and recreated a tech support reported crash with graph builder/nested columns/changing column types (JMP-16600).

- Brian C: Met with Snowflake and Benchling about JMP integration. Continued work and good progress with a PoC of replacing the Excel engine on Windows with the LibXL library that we use on the Mac.
- John Schroedl: Adding host hardware telemetry items. More tweaks for SAS transport file support. Various discussions and troubleshooting of customer issues and crashes. Visual Studio support.
Interactive HTML
JMP Live
- Aurora: Along with the rest of the JMP Live dev team, did a day of white box testing which was very fruitful. Planned implementation of folder level access control. Fixed various bugs. Investigating data history load time.
Statistics
- John Sall: Fix Benjamini-Yekutieli CI's in response to David Elsheimer’s finding that I was counting the wrong p-values - JMP-14909. From a meeting with Merck, Chris Gotwalt reported that they much needed user-specified knots for the spline terms in Fit Model. That turned out to be easy to do, and once it was in the framework, it works for most of the linear-model platforms. (JMP-16557) Here the custom-specified knots out-perform the default equally-spaced knots for a logistic curve fit.

- Laura C-S: Prepared and presented a lightning talk at the Novozymes Hackaton on SEM. Finished a longitudinal Measurement Invariance shortcut in SEM and wrote a feature page for it.

- Elizabeth: Pushed work for the ANTE(1) covariance structure for GLMMs (JMP-16330). Investigated issues with prediction intervals and various types of random effects. Working on a complicated integration to 17.2 for a needed fix (JMP-9822) but that is intertwined with other work that doesn’t go into 17.2.
- Annie: Finishing up importing product statistics from a table and fixing Short Run Control Chart bugs in preparation for the Short Run Control Charts for EA3.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Preparing for the arrival of our statistical documentation intern next week; documentation updates for various platforms, including Distribution and Fit Y by X.

Finished usability study of current Model step in Easy DOE for inclusion in EA3 with Jacob. Wrote draft of presentation about usability study of new factor list in DOE for INFORMS QSR conference next month with Jacob. Continued populating prototype of new JMP R&D Technical Resources site with Caleb. (Please let me know if you have a new blog post that would be appropriate for this area!) Mentored Greg Prandor at IBM about basic statistics and ANOVA before handing off to Andrea. Answered questions in JMP Community.
- Jacob: Testing Easy DOE updates for 17.2 with Mark Bailey and writing a new test for split-plot designs in Easy DOE. Testing the MSA Design Fit Model table script in 17.2. Creating a covering array to help design new test cases for Multivariate Embedding. Testing a pending change for the Make Validation Column Cutpoint option. Finalizing a usability study for the Easy DOE Model tab with Mark Bailey.
- Tonya: Answered a user community question about Laney charts. Testing short run control charts in CCB and the process potential graph in Process Screening.
