To You tube or Not To You Tube - Background and Your ThoughtsHi,
When we embed videos into the Community, they are played using the Brightcove player provided by Khoros.
This is different than our JMP/SAS Brightcove instance , which provides more stats than the one embedded in Community.
We would like more stats on video views. Also we hypothesize that people asking questions, like "how do I import excel to JMP?' may search You tube, or find answers on You tube through through internet searches.
We are experimenting with weekly posting the Mastering JMP videos to You Tube, embedding the You Tube link to the Mastering video page in the Community to get some data about the arrival path, view info, and number of views.
Here are some notes from a May 5 meeting.
- Advantages over what we currently have in Community.
- We can get data on views including referring pages from Community when we embed You tube videos in IFrame, including language of view, view times. We can’t run this from Community although can see it posted to owner video page using VIEW IN MY VIDEOS. ACTION:
- We (those of us with account privs) can download videos we post so don’t have to keep .mp4 duplicate copies. NOTE: We can’t download .mp4 currently embedded in Community.
- Users can use auto-captions and auto-translations.
- We can time stamp and define subtitles. See for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z_Ejv5F9O0
- Sarah C. will do basic copy edit and jazzing of text as needed.
- Added May 10: On You tube, viewers can slow down speed. Our Asian team has requested this for our English videos.
- Actions and Questions
- Who can run reports? We would like someone on Ryan Gilmore’s team to be able to run reports, or at least get them delivered to us, weekly automatically. (Sarah)
- Who can upload? Possible someone from Kathy Walker’s team (Maria Astals Seres) and Ryan Gilmore’s team (Gail Massari). (Sarah)
- Best practices need to be documented. (Sarah)
- Gail to start creating Mastering JMP, with time stamps, and send to Sarah via One Drive for upload. Gail to send by Monday noon with goal of Sarah posting by Tuesday 9 am. We’ll evaluate how this works. (Sarah and Gail)
- When we start Mastering, we need something each week, even if it is a legacy video. (Gail)
- Document Mastering editing to You tube process. (Gail)
- Can we get rid of ads? (Sarah)
- Ruth and Mia are posting about 100 short videos. Let us know when list is available in Confluence and/or when they start posting. (Sarah)
- Ryan to invite Sarah to one of our weekly meetings to share video stats with Mastering as example. Probably early June. (Sarah and Ryan)
NotesRe: To You tube or Not To You Tube - Background and Your Thoughts@SarahCromer posted the first Mastering JMP video to You Tube. It is on Dashbaord Builder, presented by @scwise and @Jed_Campbell . Thank you Sarah!
I embedded it on the Community Mastering page with the Q&A text, Journal, slides and links to other related resources.
On You Tube it is part of a new Mastering JMP Playlist.
When You tube viewers view it, they can turn on autocaptions and go to embedded links (I chose 7, maybe too many?), which is something our Asian English speaking people have wanted. (I have to do this when watching my cello teachers videos!) One can also slow down the speed, again, something our Asian team @AS requested.

You tube viewers can also click back to the Community.
We will run stats after a few more are posted.
Re: To You tube or Not To You Tube - Background and Your Thoughts@Ryan_Gilmore Dan Sutton (Samsung) on Mastering today said his company blocks You Tube. We need to look into impact of embedding You Tube in Community for people who may have that limitation.. I'll be in touch with Dan after I get back May 22
