Discussion Forum Updates

Hi,

 

The Discussions area will have the new styling applied either today (01MAY23) or later this week. A blog article in Community News will discuss some of the changes. Here's a screenshot showing the re-styled landing page.

 

 

In addition, we have included the JMP analytic capabilities to the list of labels that can be selected when starting a topic. The previous labels still exist for compatibility. We will eventually transition to just the analytics capabilities. 

 

If you notice any issues, please let us know.

The new format uses a very large font.  I know we're all getting old, but could the font be reset to what it was before, like on this page?

Also there's a lot of whitespace.

I didn't even notice missing orange bubble (at first) as I always start from the "Welcome to the community" page and go back to that as I like to see all discussion areas, but it definitely should be there as I won't be most likely clicking on my head to see if I happen to have some notifications. Earlier I just saw them with very quick glance over the profile bubble

I'm always fascinated by UI conversations. I tend to like the larger font and increased spacing because I find it easier to read and consume the information. Why do you prefer the smaller font and less whitespace? Same reason I like the other? Just curious. Thanks.

In my case it is because I'm scanning for messages that need attention, not looking at the most recent message. Scaling down does not work for me; the data/space ratio does not change and the fonts get too small and there is a huge white space on each side at 67% scale. Old guy here needs big font and maximum contrast. This gray font I'm typing in is fading away.

What type of information are you looking for when scanning? Or, what information not displayed would make it easier for you to find what you're looking for?

Who updated it last. How many have replied. What the topic is. There is a sweet spot in there that tells me if I might be able to contribute without actually reading it.

topic==statistics? probably not

No one replied yet and the question is old and the title poorly thought out? probably not

Someone I know that participates in good questions? this will be more fun...

 

So I'm looking for

• unanswered questions with titles I like
• questions with answers from respected community members
• controversial questions (lots of answers)

I think a minor improvement to the old way of showing the most recent replier is to not show the asker as a recent replier. That gives me a better chance of noticing the respected community member.

 

Respected means no disrespect to anyone...

I've noticed I get badge notifications about 30% of the time when someone has responded to my post?  Also the newcomer identification for new posters is missing?

Are LinkedIn badge profiles accepted as signatures in the JMP Community ?
From the LinkedIn help, the page needs to have this code inside :

So that everyone interested in displaying their badges could just copy and paste their personal badge code in their signature (example with mine here) :

It seems interesting, as you don't need to refresh your signature based on your job/company, and this can more easily display your LinkedIn profile if you want to.

Completely endorse and agree with the responses from @Craige_Hales (and sorry for being late and not having seen this wise reply earlier).

I'm not a fan of the new design, everything is bigger, but unfortunately looks also "emptier", filled with more blank.

 

On the Home Page of the Community, it would be great to have "summary statistics" about each post like Craige mentioned, to know :

• how many people have participated,
• who are the participants in the conversation
• the level of the person who ask the question (to know in advance which level of details/explanation should be given, and give a proper welcome to new members !), ...

 

To show an example, another forum (about data analytics open-source software) I'm frequenting has quite a nice UI  :

• You have all the different categories listed on the left : JMP could use the "bookmarks" or the categories like "DoE", "Machine Learning" etc... that people can select when creating their post, to efficiently filter the posts we want to see and answer to in the forum.
• You have an indication of where you left off previous time : amazing feature to be honest, it helps a lot to spot newly created posts, and older posts with new responses are in bold writing.
• You have the small "badges" of the people participating in the discussion, maybe something similar could be done here (with the level added in the badge and possibility to hover the mouse on each badge to have the profile summary like we have already ?),
• You know how many replies have been made in each post, the number of views (to spot "popular" or highly debated posts), and when was the last activity.

Clearly, there are a lot of good ideas on other forums, on StatsExchange they have ideas on how to highlight answers with highest likes or "approved answers" by making these replies bigger (or the other ones smaller) : 

 

I'm quite sure there are a lot of other good ideas on other forums that could be implemented/added to improve the JMP User Community

If it requires the Javascript code to display, then no, we do not currently support LinkedIn signatures. We can investigate.

 

I did recently learn that signatures may be going away in an upcoming release of the community platform. That may change by the time we are ready to migrate to the new platform though.

Kudo button also feels a bit confusing to me. In which Kudos has already been given by me? Second one.

Based on coloring on Accept as Solution and Reply, I would guess I can still Kudo second? As it is also green which indicates something I can do but in fact it is for removing my Kudo? Maybe the thumbs up could be filled if kudos have been given?

 

@Ryan_Gilmore  also In general, is there some specific idea behind those colors? What is blue and what is green?

Thank you for all the feedback within this topic. We pushed some changes today (15JUN23) that address some of the concerns mentioned:

 

• The "who kudoed" page has improved styling
• The Insert Code toolbar button in the editor is now displayed
• Who last replied is now shown when viewing the list of Discussion topics
• Reduced the whitespace for lists (I know you would probably like to see more reduction. )
• User's signature is styled different than the content
• The notification badge is now displayed with the new styling

We'll look at addressing some of the others in future updates.

Yes, it looks like the Community Dashboard is missing from the home page of the Community.
