Discrete Event Simulation in JMPWhat inspired this Wish List Request?
Before coming to work at JMP, I've used discrete event simulators to work on problems. I've usually coupled those with a DOE in JMP to optimize factors. Using the Reliability Block Diagram and Repairable Systems Simulation in JMP Pro made me realize JMP Pro is closer to having the ability to do discrete event simulation than I thought.
Please describe the new or improved feature or solution you would like to see.
A "minimal viable product" to do discrete event simulations in JMP.
What would the value be to you and/or other users if this new feature is provided?
This would allow simple simulations and DOE/optimization without having to build a model twice (once in external software, then once again in JMP). Essentially, more time spent in JMP make JMP more sticky.
Is this an external customer request?
Not really, although there is an external Wish List item from a customer in 2020 (link here) requesting we bring back the Simulation Studio.
Is there a competitive software package that has this feature or solution that we should be aware of?
There are a number of other simulators, ranging from FOSS to expensive. One I've used previously is Jaamsim
Will this impact a renewal, expansion, or adoption at a customer, and does this put an account at risk if we do not address this?
It customers, provided the target audience knows about it. This definitely doesn't have the same reach as something like the Workflow Builder.

We have considered before many times in the past, and the decision has always been that this is not something core to our business and that we want to pursue. Many years ago, JMP could sell a JMP/SAS Studio bundle, if I remember correclty, but it really never got much traction. SAS Studio is still available from SAS, and according to it's documentation it still has some JMP integration capabilities, but it doesn't look like it has been updated for 5-6 years.
Re: Discrete Event Simulation in JMPThanks Sam. Yes, it makes sense to spend the bulk of programming time on projects that a larger percentage of the user base will appreciate/use.
Re: Discrete Event Simulation in JMP - Status changed to: Not Planned For NowRe: Discrete Event Simulation in JMPI am currently working with a JMP Pro evaluation customer from Medtronic who would be able to use this.
Re: Discrete Event Simulation in JMPWhen I worked in the semiconductor industry, I evaluated the SAS software and loved it. That capability was sorely needed for us, but the expense was too much - especially considering we already had something built in Excel. What we had checked the box for management (precluding spending big money), but was ineffective in practice. Meanwhile every engineer at the site had a JMP license, so if it were part of JMP, we definitely would have taken advantage of it. Based on my experience, I would think many groups in the semiconductor industry could use this capability to optimize usage of relatively expensive resources. They may not realize there is an off-the-shelf solution available.
Re: Discrete Event Simulation in JMPWe should definitely have Discrete event simulation.
Re: Discrete Event Simulation in JMPAny organization with formal lean six sigma initiative will want or are already using discrete event simulation. On Semiconductor is one that comes to mind. It is a powerful tool in process optimization which is a focal point in LSS methodology. Having this capability in JMP adds another component of a users complete analytical workflow to the JMP umbrella. Hard to anticipate the creative uses of this but Jed's DOE example may be one of many. I also like the idea of having this capability be in JMP Pro.
Re: Discrete Event Simulation in JMPAdding some color to this - by not having this capability we are allowing competitor to regain a toe hold at a large strategic customer (IDEXX - JMP, JMP Pro, JMP Live customer) that we had successfully removed. Minitab recently acquired a discrete event simulation tool called simul8 (https://www.simul8.com/) which IDEXX is looking to license. SAS has a Java based solution, Simulation Studio - part of SAS OR, that their dev's tested and were able to compile on Mac and PC hosts. It already integrates with JMP, importing JMP DOE tables to control simulation parameters. Seems like something in the realm of possibility to get that code as a starting point for our own efforts.
