APRIL 2022: This story remains for historical purposes only. For updated instructions on translating AEM pages in Smartling, please see Translating an AEM page in Smartling: Step-by-Step instructions.
You will need access to AEM and Smartling before completing this process.
Note#1: There is no support from a non-English language to another language in Smartling. (E.g. From Japanese to German) If you need this done, contact Cary marketing.
Note#2: There is currently a bug that is not allowing us to submit multiple languages at once. You will need to submit it again to the same job via the "Add to job" tab when you need another language added.
Note#3: If you are trying to translate an email for an email blast, follow this guide.
- Navigate to the English web page in the BluePrint (jmpbp/en) you wish to translate in AEM and open the page by selecting the page and clicking "Edit".
- On the top left of the screen are two icons, click the right one (Page Information).

- Select "Smartling: Translate as Job"

- Add the following items:
- "Job Name" should say "JMP:", content type, page name, creation date and submitter -- e.g. "JMP: Customer Story - SMIC - 6/15/2021 - Jonathan Bryant"
- "Due Date" - Unless you already have all translations or the content is extremely short, the "Due Date" should be set at least two weeks out to give the translation agency time to translate.
- Check "Authorize job" if you plan to use our default Translation agency (Smartling Language Services a.k.a. SLS). Otherwise you will need to authorize it in Smartling and choose the correct workflow. (E.g. Internal Review ONLY, Password or Machine translation).
- If you have Sub-pages (a.k.a. Child pages), please select the checkbox to translate those as well. Be careful because it will translate ALL pages located under the parent page. If you have only two pages out of five that are under the parent page that you want to translate, you will need to add those to the job one by one after creating the job.
- Select each language you want to translate into. For Chinese, you need to specify "Chinese (China)" or "Chinese (Taiwan)"

- "Force resubmission" allows you to re-submit the page if you have previously done so in Smartling but have not made any changes to it.
- You can now click "Create Job". After you create it, it can take some time depending on the amount of strings you sent to Smartling. (On rare occasions, even hours if AEM is slow/lagging)
- If you have more pages, repeat the same process and click the "Add to job" tab. It allows you to add more pages to that project. After you click this tab, select the job name and the languages and authorize again if you did before.
- If you are submitting content to Smartling Language Services (translation vendor), you are done. It's good to go and check the Workflow summary in Smartling to make sure its there but other than that, the translation process has begun. Go to #12 below.
- If you did not select "Authorize Job", you will need to go into Smartling and authorize your content and select the correct workflow for it.
- Log in to Smartling
- Click on "Projects" at the top and select "JMP.com" If it's already selected, ignore this.

- On your Dashboard, you will see under "New Content" some content like this image. Click on view jobs.

- Find your job name and click "Authorize" on the right side of it.

- Select the "Choose Translation Workflow" to choose your specific workflow and then select the "Confirm" button.

- **Note on Workflows: There are certain workflows that we use depeding on the translation amount and content quantity.
- [JMP.com Internal Translation] - only passes through our internal reviewers to translate themselves
- [JMP.com Machine Translation] - machine translation (Google for now) with internal review
- [JMP.com Offline] - sends to Password translation services for paid translations
- [Smartling Translation Services] - sends to Smartling translation services for paid translations (this is the DEFAULT Workflow)
- Smartling Language Services - MTPE - this was created to utilize Machine Translation with a post-edit translator fro Smartling, then internal review to save money. SAS is currently using this method for general content (not highly technical) to save money and time.
Confirm content is in the workflow by checking the workflow summary. (currently hidden under the GEAR icon)
Now that the content has been approved and sent for translations, for the project manager role, you just need to wait for the notification that that page has been Published. It should look something like this:
You can confirm it by logging into Smartling and clicking on your job. Look for the strings to be moved in the "Published" step in the workflow. If you notice some languages not meeting the deadline, please email that country's marketing person (internal reviewer) directly to follow up about that translation project.
Next you navigate to the local language AEM page in their respective Blue Print (e.g. jmpbp/fr/software/new-release/new-in-jmp-and-jmp-pro), confirm the new content is loaded on the page and Publish it.
FINAL STEP: Go back into Smartling and "Close" the project to show that it has been fully completed. To do this, you simply open up the job and click on the “Close Job” button and confirm it.

After that you will see the job is now “Closed” on the job list.

By doing this, it will tell everyone whether the job is fully completed.
NOTE: In the case that the new translations are not loaded, you will have to navigate to the AEM project located here and find your project to initiate the script to pull in the translation. Projects are found in the "smartling-auto" folder and the exact date that you created the project. Locate the project with the job title that you original entered (e.g. JMP: Customer Story - SMIC 6/12/2018) and click the project with the target language you want to load.
or
It should show a tile (box) that says "Ready for Review" as shown below. You can now navigate back to the AEM local language blue print page and Publish it.

Thisi s a great resource JB! I always forget this process. Super helfpul!
