Welcome to the JMP Development Update for April 7, 2023!
Thanks to Bob Hickey for reporting that JMP Clinical 17.1 full installers were signed off today. The decision was made to not have a JMP Clinical 17.1 updater. This completes the final set of signoffs for JMP 17.1. Congratulations to all teams who have worked so hard to get our latest fixes out to customers! Looking forward to celebrating with many of you next week at the JMP Reunion.
The JMP 17.1 release process has been different than past releases as we have begun work to transition away from using SAS-controlled release and delivery processes towards a fully JMP-controlled process for JMP 18. Notably, JMP 17.1 full installers are not available through the SAS download process. (We do plan to send JMP 17.2 through the SAS release process for a final time and will also make 17.2 available through the complete My JMP process.)
Updaters for JMP 17.1 and JMP Pro 17.1 are available for all JMP customers through support.sas.com now, and JMP 17.1 full installers are available now via My JMP for those orders processed through the new JMP business process. JMP 17.1 full installers will be available for all customers (including legacy accounts) via My JMP in the near future. The employee download page is also ready with full JMP 17.1 downloads for internal use only. If you have any release related questions, please reach out to Bob.
Thanks to Julian Parris for presenting at the JMP Dev meeting on Tuesday! As John Sall remarked at the start of the meeting, as of April 1, Xan Gregg now has a new title of Distinguished Engineering Fellow and Julian has taken over management of the Data Discovery group. Congratulations to both on their new roles! Julian’s presentation on a scripted prototype for managing customized report templates generated a lot of questions and much discussion in the meeting chat. I hear Mia and Julian will be collaborating on some initial usability testing for his prototype and Julian shared this Confluence page with more information and instructions on installing it. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here.
Thanks also to JMP Live Sciences developer Luciano Silva for presenting on the new Marker Relatedness platform in JMP Pro 18 at Thursday’s dev meeting! Luciano’s new platform replaces SAS-based functionality that was previously available in JMP Genomics. Work on this new platform work has been enabled by recent mixed models additions made by Chris Gotwalt and John Sall. If you missed the meeting, you can find a recording here.
Regarding development meeting topics, I have several other meetings on the schedule for Thursdays after JMP reunion week, but I am always looking for future meeting topics. If you have a presentation idea in mind, I would be glad to arrange a session for you for a future date - just send me an email or Teams message and we can set up a placeholder.
Finally, thanks to Audrey Shull for this week’s Jira Tip of the Week!
When you need to make bulk updates, Jira provides an easy way to do that. Perhaps you need to change Fix Version or Planned Version for several dozen items. Perhaps you want to Watch (or unWatch) a bunch of items. Perhaps you need to transition the work to someone else and need to update the Assignee & Developer roles for a lot of items of a certain component. Here’s how to do this.
- Create a Jira filter that narrows down to the list of items you need to affect. Use Filters->Advanced Issue Search to narrow it down to the proper list.
- Click the … in the upper right corner of the page and choose Bulk change all N issue(s).
- Select all items, or choose which ones should be exempt from the change. Next.
- Choose the action you want to perform. In most cases, it will be Edit Issues, but sometimes you’ll want to do one of the other actions (Move, Transition, Watch, Stop Watching). Next.
- If you chose Edit Issues, find the field(s) you want to change. Check the box next to it, and make the appropriate change. All Jira fields are available here and you can make multiple changes at once. Scroll to the bottom and click Next.
- Review your changes on the last page. Confirm.
Details about how to perform bulk updates can be found in Confluence here.

JMP Development Updates
Product Management
- Sara Doudt: Product Marketing held a training session this week focused on the Semiconductor industry. You can check out Kaylee Warren’s wrap-up article here with more details!
- Bryan Fricke: Met with Aaron Andersen to discuss user test notes on JMP Project and stand-alone windows. I also created a Jira and Confluence page describing a problem we have with the discoverability of tabular hover help in the context of reports. David Barbour is refining a prototype that demonstrates potential solutions. The goal is to verify one or more of the most promising of those prototypes outperforms our current implementation. Also, I met with Ernest about where and how to display the univariate statistics signifier in the context of data tables. Finally, I reviewed a user testing script for SEM.
Technical Support

Development Operations
- Jim: Branching, integration and building of the JMP executables for 17.1.1 has taken place. Bob and I are reviewing Mac and Win installers – look for an email to announce their availability for testing. Reported new and verified fixed assertion failures from this past week’s UT runs. Perforce support.
- Melanie: Finished sample data table string fixes. Finished testing the XLF string return improvements. Finished cataloging and defining localization work to migrate to AWS; localization is now ready to begin moving work over. Some miscellaneous Jira updates and script writing.
- Myron: Worked on JMPTOOL-809: Switch from OpenAM to Okta for authentication and JiraBot updates (ownership changes, component updates, etc.).
- Bob: Created Windows updaters for 17.1.1 JMP and JMP Pro.
Documentation
- Susan C: Working mainly on the Tip of the Day revamp, or what we now call Quick Start tips. Based on the STIPS Get Started video and the New User Welcome Kit videos, I proposed an outline of content we might consider and put it here in Confluence for initial review. I’ve also been working on Jiras for 18 and created the EA Jiras.
- Qiana: Working with WebWorks to plan for an ePublisher upgrade and to determine AWS migration considerations. Spent time working on Help Menu changes, identifying changes in 17.2 source files, and creating the JMP 18.0 EA2 Help. Did project planning and coordination.
- ChrisB: Worked on the new Help menu, the copy script issue (JMPTOOL-788), and creating a new doc add-in (and instructions for doing so).
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: Gathering a few if/else and For/Each workflows to create an EA2 video for Workflow Builder. Stumbled across a few crashes that have since been fixed, so hoping today to wrap that up and get it to Mia. Worked on verifying and testing some JIRA tickets. Worked with Mike M. to assist with Sikuli tests for crashes in workflows.
- Nick H: Working mainly on both 17.2 and 18.0 verifications adding a couple of image tests and unit tests to the framework. In the coming days I will be helping Audrey in moving defStatus.jmp and jiraIssuesStatus.jmp into perforce by making the necessary changes needed in the framework to phase out the old defects code and adjust the references to the jiraIssuesStatus.jmp location.
- Mike M: Image test regressions with Peng, 2 new Jiras (BY group change affecting HTML, Worlflow Builder Log message). Spent quite a bit of time adding and enhancing WFB Sikuli tests.
- Anna: Verifying fixes. Beginning to look at Dan S’s new Group platform and meet with Hunter to discuss testing.
- Audrey: Setting up AWS machines for the test group, Jira admin stuff, preparing for 17.1.1.
System/Host Testing-Beijing
Created a page on how to do a quick Viay 3.5 AML deployment using UDANext (3) Setup a MS AD server for JMP Live AD sync testing.
- Nala: (1) Reviewed projects/tasks in Beijing team. (2) Discussed with Wenjun about JMPC 17.2 testing.
Data Discovery
- Dan S: Recorded video for EA2 for Group Platform, updates for Fit Model / PCA / Contour / scripting / telemetry for Group Platform, Fixed Tab Box JSL constructor, Conditional data filter fix, 17.2 updates for session files / text box scripting / text focus.

- Ernest: Preferences for Columns Viewer, various Workflow Builder fixes, and 17.2 patches.
- Xan: Header charts: saving, scripting, recording.
DOE
- Peng: Rewrote the 15yr old legend display piece in Fit Life by X (JMP-16158), so users can customize the line style. This is in response to a JMP Community post. It was fun to navigate the rabbit hole that I dug for myself many years ago. And big thanks go out to Mike Muhlada for patiently working back and forth with me on regressions. Continued working on JMP 18 development on both DOE and Reliability sides.
- Caleb: Started work on the user interface for the new ALT platform. Still very basic but I hope to have more in there by EA3!
Host
- John Schroedl: Continue development of changes to use ICU library. Remove SAS dataset extended attr UI from host dialogs. Investigating VS issue where performance profiling collects no data.

- Completed trainings for SAS Messaging and Harassment/Respect.
JMP Live
- Aurora: 18.0: Continued work on @ mentioning users in comments. Between my server side work and Michael Goff's excellent client side work, we have a nicely working prototype that just needs buttoning up. Miscellaneous: Added more Jira automation to the JMP Live project. Did a bit of Jira triage. Reached out to legal for guidance on compliance with GDPR.
Statistics
- Elizabeth: Answered an emailed Mixed Model question from a customer at Colgate-Palmolive who had attended my developer tutorials. Answered an internal question on validation observation prediction in KNN. Participated in a discussion on KFold use and reporting in JMP. Continued work on repeated measures structures for GLMMs (the first is ready to push, but I’m waiting until after the EA2 cut as it won’t have been tested at all).
- John Sall: Model Screening has a preliminary implementation of a command "Save Folded Prediction Formula" to save a prediction formula for k-fold that does not involve the training for each fold, i.e. is leak-free. Currently it only works for continuous responses. (JMP-16252)
