The Series is simply the Discovery Summit series

Online: we will continue calling the events by the regions they represent (customers, content, languages, staffing). Gina’s online event is Discovery Summit China 2021.
Because the in-person part will be relevant to a smaller group of people – only users in Shanghai, in this case -- we will name it appropriately. Therefore in-person part this year will also incorporate these words...Special Segment: Shanghai.

Following that rule, here are the event names...
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit China 2021
- [IN-PERSON] Discovery Summit China 2021 Special Segment: Shanghai
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit Americas 2021
- [IN-PERSON] Discovery Summit Americas 2021 Special Segment: SAS World Headquarters
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit Korea 2021
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit Japan 2021
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit Europe 2022
- [IN-PERSON] Discovery Summit Europe 2022 Special Segment: Sitges
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit Americas 2022
- [IN-PERSON] Discovery Summit Americas 2022 Special Segment: TBD
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit Korea 2022
- [IN-PERSON] Discovery Summit Korea 2022 Special Segment: Seoul
- [ONLINE] Discovery Summit Japan 2022
- [IN-PERSON] Discovery Summit Japan 2022 Special Segment: Tokyo (or Osaka)
That’s a mouthful, but it doesn’t need to be too bad in text.
For instance, we could say...
“For JMP users in Shanghai, we are hosting a Special Segment of Discovery Summit China. This one-day, invitation-only gathering will be at (venue name here) on June 24, 2021. ...”
We could also say something like...
“For the dedicated JMP user who absolutely must have a conversation with JMP’s creator John Sall, for the statistical thinker who needs the focus of an immersive environment, and for the kinesthetic learner who has got to be hands-on in a real-life Beta lab, we are hosting a Special Segment of Discovery Summit Americas. The small in-person event will take place at SAS World Headquarters in Cary, North Carolina on Tuesday, October 6, with optional un-sessions before and after the conference.
You get the idea.
This is not perfect, I know. If someone is passionate about a different way of naming Discoveries moving forward, speak up and make your case.
Also, it's worth noting that we may change this naming convention next year, beginning with Discovery Summit Europe. What we have here may be temporary, as we figure out how to handle 2021.
I very much appreciate these thoughts and comments. I think we addressed most of them in the two conversations we've had since. For anyone else reading this, we've gone around and around, considering many different ways to differentiate online vs onsite. Special Segment is the best we could do, and the rest of the explanation will happen in how we describe the events, and how we selectively invite people to the Special Segment.
Hi Diana,
I think this is very interesting and like the format that you have created. I only have a couple of concerns and they pertain to the "Special Segment" bit.
I think it makes sense when elaborated on in a sentence, but I am afraid that users or prospects who aren't in this every day like we are will easily make the connection that that terms equates to an in-person event. Does segment relate to like a tv episode or a segment of the population? I also don't have a good alternative. The only thing I came up with was short and sweet - Onsite vs. Online.
My other concern about the term, with the in-person component being by invitation-only, that we might hurt the feelings of those not invited? That by not getting an invitation they too are not "special." Could it feel not inclusive?
Those are my thoughts as I've pondered them over the last couple of days. Thank you for putting your head around this!!
