Following the end of each quarter, the Global Academic Team provides recent highlights that feature new licensing wins, strategic adoptions, and other relevant updates from the previous quarter. Here are highlights from Q1 2023:
AMERICAS
University of Arkansas. The University of Arkansas is the top university in Arkansas and has strong JMP use in agriculture and food science. During a conversation at the 2022 Joint Statistical Meetings, JMP champion Prof. Andy Mauromoustakos invited Ross Metusalem to deliver a half-day in-person workshop open to the entire campus. Approximately 70 faculty and grad students from agriculture, life sciences, chemistry, and other disciplines attended to learn about basic-to-advanced modeling, DOE, genomics, and more. The visit led to a connection with an Assistant Professor in Industrial Engineering (and former Ph.D. student of JMP champion Peter Goos) who said that he intends to switch from R to JMP for his undergraduate DOE and data science courses.
University of South Florida. With nearly 50,000 students at its main campus, the University of South Florida is one of the largest universities in the United States, and it is one of only three universities to be designated a State of Florida “pre-eminent” university (alongside the University of Florida and Florida State University). The JMP Academic team was invited to deliver a two-hour workshop by the Associate Dean of Community and Behavioral Sciences, with the express purpose of spreading JMP across campus. Approximately 30 faculty and graduate students from disciplines ranging from communication sciences to electrical engineering joined for an overview of exploratory data analysis and basic-to-advanced modeling, and a poll revealed that the workshop marked the first exposure to JMP for the grand majority of attendees.
New courses: Chuck London reports that we have also added new course adoptions at Michigan State University (Analytic Methods in Health Studies), Rochester Institute of Technology (Statistics for Social Sciences), University of Arkansas (Modern Statistical Technologies for Industrial Applications), and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (Health Care Data and Analytics) among others in Q1.
EMEA
Polytechnic University of Milan. Founded in 1863 (it is the oldest university in Milan), the Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico di Milano) is the largest engineering university in Italy, with about 48,000 students, it’s among the top 20 universities in the world in Design, Architecture, and Engineering, and the best one in Italy for many years. After a long - and sometimes ‘bumpy’ - collaboration over the past 5 years, accompanied by a 1-year trial license between 2022 and 2023, and countless calls and virtual demos, the JMP Academic EMEA team has succeeded in positioning JMP Pro as the best tool their engineering students can use to shape the world of tomorrow, replacing Minitab as the historical data analysis software provided by default to thousands of students for many years. JMP will be used to teach Quality Data Analysis, Design of Experiments, 6-Sigma, and Machine Learning.
Joint Data Analytics Course with BASF at KU Leuven. BASF organized and taught another one-week data analytics (former six sigma) course at KU Leuven, the first time as a course in the Chemical Engineering master curriculum. On the first day, Volker Kraft introduced 15 master students to the problems which can be solved using JMP (also in the industry), and how to get started using JMP Pro. Student feedback shared by BASF: “Students were very enthusiastic. Feedback was positive and students asked if it would be possible to make the course even broader”. Will also work on a success story with BASF, so that other JMP users will be inspired by this academic-industry collaboration.
New courses: The JMP Academic EMEA team assisted many professors and educators to integrate JMP in new courses in Q1, including The University of Manchester (“Evolutionary Biology”), Hebrew University of Jerusalem (“Machine Learning Methods”), DTU (“Digital Manufacturing – Industry 4.0”), Université de Liège (“Intro chemometrics”), and University M'Hamed Bougara in Algeria (“Formulations en chimie organique industrielle”).
ASIA
Zhejiang University. The School of Microelectronics at Zhejiang University was established in May 2015, specializing in microelectronics science and engineering, circuit and system microelectronics and solid-state electronics, integrated circuit engineering, electronics, and information engineering. They have a DOE course focused on semiconductors and asked us to help them integrate JMP into the course. Juliana Zhou worked with them on 8 separate occasions with workshops and other resources to develop their students’ statistical thinking, modeling, and DOE skills with JMP.
Biostatistics summit. China Academic Team attended the 4th regulation-Biostatistics summit with China HLS Team with 600 attendees. The speakers and attendees are from the CENTER FOR DRUG EVALUATION(CDE), along with pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and universities. The attendance of CDE officers made this conference especially impactful as their influence is felt throughout the pharma industry. The team demonstrated JMP Pro and JMP Clinical capabilities which generated great interest. They were especially interested in JMP visualization, modeling, patient profile, AE narrative report, and RBM/CSM. Many requested the JMP Trial and product information. Overall, the Biostatistics Summit was a success as well as a great opportunity to demonstrate JMP face-to-face and to meet faculty and industry leaders.
The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) was established in 1963 as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry to contribute toward the skill building for the external trade sector of India. It has come a long way to successfully develop into a unique institution involved in imparting knowledge through research and training in international business and trade. IIFT onboarded JMP academic suite and will be using JMP for statistics and research methods courses. Masters and research students will be using JMP as part of their coursework.
