What inspired this Wish List Request?
This is a request from analysts at Panasonic. The SE for them is Masakazu Okada-san at JMP Japan.
This request is closely related to the request I reported .
I devided their request into two pieces, but if you have better idea, please ignore this our suggestion.
Please describe the new or improved feature or solution you would like to see.
The users at Panasonic want to set Value Labels from their mapping data tables. In the mapping data tables, values and labels are saved. They have many mapping data table, so they want to do it systematically. (They have already known that they can copy and paste the mapping information onto the list box in Value Label column property. They have also already known they can do it if they program it with JSL.)
Masakazu Okada-san and me would like to suggest the option to save scripts for mapping with data table references. To see what we want, please follow the steps below.
(1) Run the following script.
Names Default To Here( 1 );
dt2 = New Table( "Mapping",
New Column( "Value", Character,
Values( {"A", "B", "C", "D", "E", "F", "G"} )
),
New Column( "Label", Character,
Values( {"AA", "BB", "CC", "DD", "EE", "FF", "GG"} )
)
);
dt1 = New Table( "Data",
New Column( "Value", Character,
Values( {"B", "C", "C", "E"} )
)
);
(2) Select the Value column in the Data, and select [Cols] > [Recode...].
(3) Click the red triangle at the top-left corner, and select [Add Value Labels].
(4) Type "B","C" and "E" at the New Label text boxes.
(5) Click the red triangle at the [New Label], and select [Advanced] > [Apply Mapping from Table].
(6) Click the [Choose Table...] button, select "Mapping".
(6) Select "Value" at the left, and "Label" at the right list box.
(7) Click [OK]. Now, you can see the labels become "BB","CC" and "EE".
(8) Click the red triangle at the top-left corner, and select [Script] > [Save Script to Script Window].
(9) See the script. The mapping information is save as below.
...
col1 << Value Labels( {"B", "C", "E"}, {"BB", "CC", "EE"} );
...
We would like to suggests an option to save data and/or column references like the below.
[This is a pseudo-code]<BR />...
col1 << Value Labels( dt2:Value, dt2:Label );
...
What would the value be to you and/or other users if this new feature is provided?
We think this new feature makes data preparation in survey research more easily.
Is this an external customer request?
Yes. This is a reqest from Panasonic. Note that their original request is that they want to set values lables in many data table more systematically on JMP.
Is there a competitive software package that has this feature or solution that we should be aware of?
I don't know. But as far as I remember, SAS can save value lables into SAS datasets, and set and use them in PROC FORMAT.
Will this impact a renewal, expansion, or adoption at a customer, and does this put an account at risk if we do not address this?
We don't think that users cancel JMP even if this feature is not implemented. But if JMP can handle survey data more systematically, they might add more licenses.
