- c) Venta puerta a puerta de sistemas de seguridad. Odié casi cada momento, pero pagué la universidad trabajando solo entre 8 y 10 horas a la semana.

He hecho un par de ellos. Primero, cuando me gradué con un título en enseñanza, me di cuenta de que realmente amaba la compañía en la que estaba (US Synthetic) y no quería irme. Decidí quedarme allí, donde parte de mi rol se convirtió en enseñar a adultos, obtener un Master Black Belt en Six Sigma y trabajar en Calidad.
La segunda gran transición ocurrió en octubre, cuando llegué a trabajar para JMP como ingeniero de sistemas. El cambio comenzó durante el Covid, cuando casi todos estaban preocupados por el futuro. Siempre había pensado que JMP sería una buena empresa para trabajar y le envié un correo electrónico a Jason Wiggins para preguntarle si JMP consideraría contratarme, como un plan de respaldo. Después de hablar con Chuck regularmente durante algunos años, finalmente me di cuenta de que estaba listo para hacer el cambio.
¿Tuviste alguna inquietud acerca de hacer un cambio? Si es así, ¿qué son ellos?
Tenía un montón de preocupaciones, principalmente relacionadas con dos aspectos:
1) "Comenzar de nuevo" en una carrera diferente pero adyacente después de 23 años, ¿es realmente una buena idea?
2) Tuve el lujo de trabajar para una gran empresa durante mucho tiempo, y sospechaba que JMP también era una gran empresa, pero quería estar seguro, ya que sería difícil pedir retractaciones después del hecho. Pude hacerle a la gente algunas preguntas muy sinceras durante el proceso de la entrevista (Juliette Plager, Stuart Neighbours, Mary Loveless, Ian Cox, Chuck Boiler) que realmente me tranquilizaron con respecto a esto.

A lo largo de los años, he pasado tiempo con muchos SE diferentes (Don McCormack, Scott Wise, Chris Kirchberg, Jason Wiggins), no como algo de "observación laboral", sino como un cliente que interactúa con ellos haciendo su trabajo. La experiencia siempre fue excelente, y siempre había pensado que tal vez 'algún día', cuando me retire de Quality, me gustaría ser SE durante algunos años. Bueno, 'algún día' terminó sucediendo mucho antes de lo que pensé que sucedería, lo que significa que mi único plan de respaldo restante es ser el tipo que conduce el acordeón-pasarela-cosas en el aeropuerto.

Chuck pasó mucho tiempo conmigo en sesiones informales de entrenamiento antes de que hubiera una oferta de trabajo. Esto significaba que me sentía perfectamente cómodo con la idea de trabajar con él y podía preguntarle cualquier cosa. Las personas tienden a ser más felices en sus carreras cuando encuentran la intersección de algo que les encanta hacer, algo en lo que son buenos y algo por lo que les pueden pagar. Mi consejo sería buscar siempre encontrar ese punto dulce.
