- a) Cucinare al KFC quando ho compiuto 16 anni. Ricordo ancora lo shock quando mi resi conto che qualcuno mi avrebbe lasciato toccare del cibo che sarebbe stato venduto a persone reali.
- b) Direttore della qualità presso US Synthetic. Ho adorato la varietà di lavoro che deriva da un ruolo di qualità e le persone sono fantastiche.
- c) Vendita porta a porta di sistemi di sicurezza. Ne odiavo quasi ogni momento, ma pagava il college lavorando solo circa 8-10 ore a settimana.

Ne ho fatti un paio. Innanzitutto, quando mi sono laureato in insegnamento, mi sono reso conto che amavo davvero l'azienda in cui lavoravo (US Synthetic) e non volevo andarmene. Ho deciso di rimanere lì, dove parte del mio ruolo si è sviluppato nell'insegnare agli adulti, ottenere una cintura nera master in Six Sigma e lavorare in qualità.
La seconda grande transizione è appena avvenuta in ottobre, quando sono arrivato a lavorare per JMP come ingegnere di sistema. Il cambiamento è iniziato durante il Covid, quando quasi tutti erano preoccupati per il futuro. Ho sempre pensato che JMP sarebbe stata una buona azienda per cui lavorare e ho inviato un'e-mail a Jason Wiggins per chiedere se JMP avrebbe preso in considerazione l'idea di assumermi, una specie di piano di riserva. Dopo aver parlato regolarmente con Chuck per alcuni anni, ho finalmente capito che ero pronto per fare il cambiamento.
Hai avuto dubbi sul fatto di apportare una modifica? Se così fosse, cos'erano?
Avevo un sacco di preoccupazioni, principalmente legate a due aspetti:
1) "Ricominciare" in una carriera diversa ma adiacente dopo 23 anni: è davvero una buona idea?
2) Ho avuto il lusso di lavorare per una grande azienda per molto tempo, e sospettavo che anche JMP fosse una grande azienda, ma volevo esserne sicuro perché sarebbe stato difficile chiedere ritiri dopo il fatto. Sono stato in grado di porre alle persone alcune domande molto sincere durante il processo di intervista (Juliette Plager, Stuart Neighbours, Mary Loveless, Ian Cox, Chuck Boiler) che mi hanno davvero messo a mio agio riguardo a questo.
Quali sono state le prime cose che hai fatto quando hai deciso che eri pronto a cambiare lavoro?
L'ho detto al mio manager del mio vecchio lavoro. Ha immediatamente presentato le opzioni per cambiare ruolo all'interno dell'organizzazione, mi ha chiesto dettagli e mi ha aiutato a prendere la decisione giusta per me, indipendentemente dall'organizzazione che ho scelto. Apprezzo molto quel livello di leadership, anche se alla fine sono passato a JMP.

Ho trascorso del tempo nel corso degli anni con molti SE diversi (Don McCormack, Scott Wise, Chris Kirchberg, Jason Wiggins), non come una cosa di "job shadowing", ma come cliente che interagisce con loro mentre fa il proprio lavoro. L'esperienza è sempre stata fantastica e ho sempre pensato che forse "un giorno" quando mi ritirerò dalla qualità mi piacerebbe essere un SE per qualche anno. Beh, "un giorno" finì per accadere molto prima di quanto pensassi, il che significa che il mio unico piano di riserva rimanente è essere il tizio che guida le passerelle a fisarmonica all'aeroporto.
Chi erano le persone che sono state determinanti nell'aiutarti a cambiare lavoro con successo, come ti hanno aiutato?
Chuck ha trascorso molto tempo con me facendo sessioni di coaching informali prima ancora che ci fosse un'apertura di lavoro. Ciò significava che ero perfettamente a mio agio con l'idea di lavorare con lui e potevo chiedergli qualsiasi cosa. Anche tutti gli altri SE del team West sono stati molto utili poiché ho lavorato per mettermi sotto i piedi in questo nuovo ruolo.
Che consiglio hai per i dipendenti di JMP che stanno pensando di cambiare ruolo?
Le persone tendono ad essere più felici nella loro carriera quando trovano l'intersezione tra qualcosa che amano fare, qualcosa in cui sono bravi e qualcosa per cui possono essere pagati. Il mio consiglio sarebbe quello di cercare sempre di trovare questo punto debole.
