- a) Cuisiner au KFC quand j'ai eu 16 ans. Je me souviens encore du choc lorsque j'ai réalisé que quelqu'un allait me laisser toucher de la nourriture qui serait vendue à de vraies personnes.
- b) Directeur Qualité chez US Synthetic. J'ai adoré la variété du travail qui accompagne un rôle de qualité, et les gens là-bas sont formidables.
- c) Vente porte à porte de systèmes de sécurité. J'en ai détesté presque chaque instant, mais cela a payé pour l'université avec seulement 8 à 10 heures de travail par semaine.

J'en ai fait quelques-uns. Tout d'abord, lorsque j'ai obtenu mon diplôme d'enseignement, j'ai réalisé que j'aimais vraiment l'entreprise dans laquelle j'étais (US Synthetic) et que je ne voulais pas partir. J'ai décidé de rester là-bas, où une partie de mon rôle s'est développée dans l'enseignement aux adultes, l'obtention d'un Master Black Belt en Six Sigma et le travail dans la qualité.
La deuxième transition majeure vient de se produire en octobre, lorsque j'ai rejoint JMP en tant qu'ingénieur système. Le changement a commencé pendant Covid, alors que presque tout le monde s'inquiétait pour l'avenir. J'avais toujours pensé que JMP serait une bonne entreprise pour laquelle travailler, et j'ai envoyé un e-mail à Jason Wiggins pour lui demander si JMP envisagerait de m'embaucher, en quelque sorte comme plan de secours. Après avoir parlé régulièrement avec Chuck pendant quelques années, j'ai finalement réalisé que j'étais prêt à faire le changement.
Avez-vous eu des inquiétudes à propos d'un changement? Si oui, quels étaient-ils ?
J'avais une tonne de préoccupations, principalement liées à deux aspects:
1) "Recommencer" dans une carrière différente mais adjacente après 23 ans - est-ce vraiment une bonne idée ?
2) J'ai eu le luxe de travailler pour une grande entreprise pendant longtemps, et je soupçonnais que JMP était aussi une grande entreprise, mais je voulais en être sûr car il serait difficile de demander des reprises après coup. J'ai pu poser aux gens des questions très franches pendant le processus d'entretien (Juliette Plager, Stuart Neighbours, Mary Loveless, Ian Cox, Chuck Boiler) qui m'ont vraiment rassuré à ce sujet.
Quelles ont été les premières choses que vous avez faites lorsque vous avez décidé que vous étiez prêt à changer de travail ?
J'en ai parlé à mon manager à mon ancien travail. Il a immédiatement présenté des options pour changer de rôle au sein de l'organisation, m'a demandé des détails et m'a aidé à prendre la bonne décision pour moi, quelle que soit l'organisation que j'ai choisie. J'apprécie vraiment ce niveau de leadership, même si j'ai fini par passer chez JMP.

Au fil des ans, j'ai passé du temps avec de nombreux SE différents (Don McCormack, Scott Wise, Chris Kirchberg, Jason Wiggins), non pas en tant que "job shadowing", mais en tant que client interagissant avec eux dans le cadre de leur travail. L'expérience a toujours été formidable et j'ai toujours pensé qu'un jour, quand je prendrai ma retraite de Quality, j'aimerais être SE pendant quelques années. Eh bien, « un jour » a fini par arriver beaucoup plus tôt que je ne le pensais, ce qui signifie que mon seul plan de secours restant est d'être le gars qui conduit les trucs accordéon-passerelle à l'aéroport.
Quelles sont les personnes qui vous ont aidé à réussir votre changement d'emploi, comment vous ont-elles aidé ?
Chuck a passé beaucoup de temps avec moi à faire des séances de coaching informelles avant même qu'il y ait une offre d'emploi. Cela signifiait que j'étais parfaitement à l'aise avec l'idée de travailler avec lui et que je pouvais tout lui demander. Tous les autres SE de l'équipe de l'Ouest ont également été très utiles car j'ai travaillé à me mettre sous la coupe de ce nouveau rôle.
Quels conseils donneriez-vous aux employés de JMP qui envisagent de changer de rôle ?
Les gens ont tendance à être plus heureux dans leur carrière lorsqu'ils trouvent l'intersection de quelque chose qu'ils aiment faire, quelque chose dans lequel ils sont bons et quelque chose pour lequel ils peuvent être payés. Mon conseil serait de toujours chercher à trouver ce sweet spot.
Parce que nous aimons les belles histoires, nous voulons savoir comment votre carrière a évolué et raconter ces histoires à nos collègues : l'évolution de votre carrière qui vous a finalement amené chez JMP ou même comment une fois arrivés chez JMP, ils ont effectué une transition majeure.
