Many of us have not taken a direct route to get to where we are in our careers today, nor should we expect a circuitous route to suddenly become straight once we’ve landed at JMP. We want employees to know they can move from one type of role at JMP to another! But making a big transition is not always easy so we want to gather stories from you; we want to learn how you moved around in your career, from A to B (or to C or D).
Let’s learn about Jed Campbell’s career journey.

Describe what you like most about it.
I love being able to help people use analytics more in their lives, and I love that I get to do this with JMP and many different circumstances and people. The work is personally rewarding, and the variety makes it exciting.
Did you work at SAS before joining JMP?
No
How long have you been at JMP?

My undergraduate degree was in English Teaching, so I studied a lot of analysis and instructional techniques. I still get to use both, but now the analysis has numbers attached, which is much more straightforward. I also use skills from my MBA all the time.
Outside of your time at JMP, what was your a) first job, b) best job, and c) worst job?
- a) Cook at KFC when I turned 16. I still remember the shock as I realized that someone was going to let me touch food that would be sold to real people.
- b) Quality Director at US Synthetic. I loved the variety of work that comes with a Quality role, and the people there are great.
- c) Door to Door Sales of security systems. I hated nearly every moment of it, but it paid for college with working only about 8-10 hours a week.

If so, what was it and how did you know you were ready for a change?
I've made a couple of them. First, when I graduated with a teaching degree, I realized that I really loved the company I was at (US Synthetic) and didn't want to leave. I decided to stay there, where part of my role developed into teaching adults, getting a Master Black Belt in Six Sigma, and working in Quality.
The second major transition just happened in October, when I came to work for JMP as a Systems Engineer. The change started during Covid, when just about everyone was worried about the future. I had always thought that JMP would be a good company to work for, and I sent an email to Jason Wiggins to ask if JMP would consider hiring me, kind of as a back-up plan. After speaking with Chuck regularly for a few years, I finally realized I was ready to make the change.
Did you have any concerns about making a change? If so, what were they?
I had a ton of concerns, mostly related to two aspects:
1) "Starting over" in a different-but-adjacent career track after 23 years--is that really a good idea?
2) I had the luxury of working for a great company for a long time, and I suspected that JMP was also a great company, but I wanted to be sure as it would be difficult to ask for take-backsies after the fact. I was able to ask people some very candid questions during the interview process (Juliette Plager, Stuart Neighbours, Mary Loveless, Ian Cox, Chuck Boiler) that really put my mind at ease regarding this.
What were the first things you did when you decided that you were ready to change jobs?
I told my manager at my old job. He immediately laid out options for changing roles within the organization, asked me details, and helped me make the right decision for me, regardless of which organization I chose. I really appreciate that level of leadership, even though I ended up moving to JMP.

If so, how was that experience?
I've spent time over the years with many different SEs (Don McCormack, Scott Wise, Chris Kirchberg, Jason Wiggins), not as a "job shadowing" thing, but as a customer interacting with them doing their jobs. The experience was always great, and I had always thought that maybe 'someday' when I retire from Quality I'd like to be an SE for a few years. Well, 'someday' ended up happening much sooner than I thought it would, which means my only remaining backup plan is to be the guy that drives the accordion-walkway-thingies at the airport.
Who were the people that were instrumental in helping you make the job switch successfully, how did they help?
Chuck spent a lot of time with me doing informal coaching sessions before there was even a job opening. This meant that I was perfectly comfortable with the notion of working with him, and I was able to ask him anything. All of the other SEs on the West team have also been very helpful as I've worked on getting my feet under me in this new role.
What advice do you have for JMP employees who are thinking about changing their roles?
People tend to be happiest in their careers when they find the intersection of something they love doing, something they are good at, and something they can get paid to do. My advice would be to always seek to find this sweet spot.
Because we love good stories, we want to learn about how your career evolved and tell these stories to our colleagues—the evolution of your career that has ultimately brought you to JMP or even how once arriving at JMP they made a major transition.
