World Cleanup Day is the world’s largest one-day civic action tackling the global waste crisis.
At JMP we share the vision of a waste-free world and believe that we can make a difference for the future of our planet.
We hope that you (perhaps in collaboration with your family, friends, and JMP colleagues, customers or partners, as appropriate) will make time to clean up trash in your community. Whether it’s a walk around your neighborhood or several hours in a community park, every bit counts.
And we will count our efforts. See details below about how we’ll report on the rubbish we collectively collect.
World Cleanup Day Timeline
Now until 21 Sept.: Plan and conduct your cleanup.
18 Sept.: Official World Cleanup Day
By 21 Sept.: Submit your trash tally and photos via this form.
By end of September: Enter expense report for any health and safety supplies you purchase up to $25 USD or the global equivalent. Be sure to attach this letter of approval to your report.
Here’s the plan in 3 steps.
1. Collect
BEFORE
DAY OF
- Make sure you have supplies needed for a safe and fun cleanup. Wear gloves, close-toed shoes, and possibly long pants and sleeves if in an area with insects. Wear bug repellant and sunscreen.
- Bring hygiene supplies in case hand washing is necessary.
- Ensure that volunteers under 18 are accompanied by an adult.
- Clarify that during the cleanups all man-made materials should be collected (except hazardous or biohazard materials).
- Be environmentally aware; for example, do not intrude or encroach on bird nesting areas or aboriginal historic sites.
- Don’t forget to take pictures! If you’re comfortable, share your progress on social media with #WorldCleanupDay and #DataForGreen.
2. Count/Weigh
- Sort and separate materials that can be recycled, either during the cleanup or once you’ve finished.
- Weigh the materials that you collected.
- Dispose of items appropriately. (For those who work at SAS headquarters: You may dispose of trash at Building LW on Thursday, 16 Sept., from 1 to 4 p.m. Katie Stone (@katie_stone) will meet you there to help.)

Place bags of waste on a scale at home.
Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the bags. Subtract the difference.
Use a handheld luggage scale (you may include this in your expense report up to $25 USD or the global equivalent).
Check with your local municipal disposal or recycling facility to see if you can weigh items there.
Use your best judgment and guestimate.
3. Report
- Report your results – enter the number of people in your cleanup crew, city, state, country, zip code and weight of collected waste via this Microsoft Form by Tuesday, 21 Sept.
- Upload photos with the same form (also embedded below).
- After you’ve completed the form, you’ll receive a confirmation email with access to a letter of approval to expense up to $25 USD (or the global equivalent) for cleanup supplies. Be sure to attach the letter to your expense report.
We’ll share results and photos from our worldwide cleanup at the end of September!
