Welcome to the JMP Development Update for March 17, 2023!
As JMP QA teams continue to vet our JMP 17.1 installers, the online portion of JMP Discovery Europe is planned for next week. You can find the schedule at https://jmp.com/dse2023. Please add notes from this event to this shared page. And if you are entering Jira feature requests from either the live or the online portion of Discovery, Mia Stephens and Sarah Sylvestre recommend entering them in the JMPPRODMGMT project with the DISCOVERY label so they can help triage.
Product management has also been working on formalizing the JMP feature retirement process. Dan Valente and Sara Doudt are working on communication plans to notify the field and customers about retired JMP features (please see Dan’s details in the Product Management section). Features currently in the process of being retired for JMP 18 are listed here and include connecting to SAS 9.4 servers, connecting to SAS OnDemand for Academics (SODA) 9.4 servers, the Statistics Index, and Sample Size and Power tools under DOE > Design Diagnostics. You can add nominations and notes about features we may want to consider retiring at the bottom of this page. Previously retired features have been moved to a subpage. Also, Sara Doudt reports that the PM team has created this process for requesting content updates or reporting bugs with the jmp.com website.
Congratulations go out to JMP statistics tester Mark Bailey on his 25th Anniversary with SAS, which was yesterday, March 16th! According to Chris Gotwalt, Mark’s endless positivity, enthusiasm, and dedication to JMP is an inspiration to all! Mark joined JMP’s Analytical Testing team in 2021 after many years as a consultant, course author and instructor in the Education group. Mark now tests JMP features like Easy DOE, Spectral Analysis, and Design Space Profiler. He has also become heavily involved in the UI/UX workstream and collaborated with Jacob Rhyne to create a Usability Study tool that others in the group are now leveraging for feature assessments. Happy anniversary, Mark, and we’re so glad you are with JMP!
Thanks very much to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s news on beta/crash cases report with crashes selected!

Beta/Crash cases for the week of 3/17/2023 | JMP Live (sas.com)
Finally, thanks to Audrey Shull for sharing this week’s Jira Tip of the Week: Occasionally, you might enter a duplicate item, or Jira glitches and creates an item twice, or you enter a task but late realize it is no longer needed and you don’t want it cluttering up your project. I’ve been asked a few times now “how do I delete this Jira issue?” The answer is that Jira discourages (and we don’t allow) true deletion in an effort to make sure nothing is accidentally lost. However, you can Move your item to the RECYCLE project, which will automatically close it and remove it from your project. This project was created to be a trash bin for items like this. Feel free to use it. Just go to the upper right corner of your ticket, click the … menu, and click Move. You will be taken through a wizard that will clear the item out of your project.

JMP Development Updates
DOE
- Brad: Caleb & I had a discussion of Christine Anderson Cook’s paper on the relationship between Machine Learning and DOE accepted by QREI.
- Also, congratulations to Brad and DOE team on the acceptance of a paper titled A Family of Orthogonal Main Effects Screening Designs for Mixed Level Factors in JQT. (Sorry, Brad, if you were saving today’s acceptance for next week. John already shared the good news with me! :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:)
Host
- Michael H: Implemented a new .sas7bdat importer that is fully stand-alone and does not use any SAS TK libraries.

Statistics
Laura C-S: Finished working on a new model shortcut for specifying a Cross-Lagged Panel Model in SEM. Thanks to Ernest for reviewing some of the code for doing this!

These are popular models for time series data and used to be very tedious to specify. Now a couple clicks take care of the hassle. Here’s one example with real data from P&G:

- John Sall: Improved the polynomial formulas, like generating coef*columnA*columnB instead of columnA*(columnB*coef), i.e. put the coefficient first and make it one multiply with three arguments instead of two multiplies (JMP-16059). Made Fit Least Squares produce a consistent report order. The current version puts the reports in the order suggested by the menus, with a few exceptions for tradition (JMP-15866).
- Annie: Working on adding a subgroup variable and associated switching behavior to the Short Run Control Charts in CCB.
- Peng: Development work in reliability for JMP18.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Updates to Scripting Index entries for Degradation; finished work on removing SAS Integration material from documentation.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Focused on software validation topics (accuracy and usability). Finished paper for submission to HCI International conference with Jacob, Ryan, and Joseph. Helped Jacob finish tool to make usability studies. Helped Annie and Di with background of Levey-Jennings Charts. Helped Nick with customer using JMP to demonstrate commutability of clinical samples. Answered questions in JMP Community.
- Jacob: Testing Make Validation Column, writing new tests for the Cutpoint option. Testing Load Design in Easy DOE, writing new tests for tables that include predefined model scripts. Preparing HCI International conference paper with Mark Bailey, Ryan Lekivetz, and Joseph Morgan. Updating the Usability Study Tool to automatically create an add-in to run the study.
- Tonya: Testing the ZI Beta Binomial and the ZI Binomial fitters in Distribution and the Short Run Control Charts in CCB.
Product Management
Customer Care
- Tech Support: Overall, it’s been business as usual in Tech Support this week. Case counts are increasing and JMP 17 has emerged as the dominant version being used by customers who reach out to Technical Support. Here are the TS JMP Live reports and the usual plot below. And, as usual, here is a Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.
- JMP Engagement: Interviews are underway for the Customer Engagement Specialist position. Meanwhile, we met with members of the Salesforce Support team this week to answer questions about the infrastructure being developed for Service Cloud to be able to support current and prospective customers.

Development Operations
- Melanie: Helping localization organize and plan to migrate jobs running on jmptool to one or more AWS vm. Working with doc, Myron, and Nick to migrate the mif-pdf builds from a CAVCENT vm to an AWS vm. Investigating sample data localization issue. Testing new jobs that run validation scripts as part of translated string returns. Investigating various doc-localization questions.
- Myron: Continued set up of localization AWS instance (acquire + install Adobe-related products, JMPTOOL-767). Updated Salesforce credentials for crash system API problems (JMPTOOL-781, JMPTOOL-771). Several Stringbot dictionary additions. Set up job to create help for 17.1 (JMPTOOL-582).
- Jim: Perforce support; work with Bob and Drew to get LifeSciences out of the old Perforce depot and into //depot/main.
Localization
- The JMP L10N team has a new Jira project for tooling work – JMPLOCTOOL. Many of the items owned by Trish, Howard, Angelita, Krzysztof and Sandy have been moved from JMP DevOps Tooling (JMPTOOL) over to this new project.
Documentation
- Chris B: Reviewed and proofed doc changes and a few weeks of StringBot strings. Messed with some add-in code for renovating the Sample Data Index (JMP-7777). Updated test Help menus. Going back through some WebWorks training and experimenting to try and understand it more.
- Susan C: Finished reviewing & making updates to JMP Live/Public localized help. Worked on text inset issues in JMP Live help. Experimenting with process Jiras in sandbox. Working on Help menu reorg for 18.
- Qiana: Addressed JMP Help issues. Assisted with the production of the JMP Live Help. Worked with the writers on the removal of “SAS integration” from the doc. Project planning.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: Many JIRA tickets to verify, and added test cases in the JSL framework where I could. Several TS tracks/Beta Tracks to resolve and track down, enter JIRA’s where needed. Hit a Windows crash last week at 17.1 that gives no traceback – it went to Hunter, he flipped it to me, and I repeated it one more time Wednesday but I can’t seem to get a reproducible case so I emailed Aaron about it. Installer testing for 17.1 – finished both my mac and windows rounds; Continue to work on JIRAs and testing; Practiced one more time for next Tuesday’s 5 am plenary.
- Audrey: Installer testing continues and is going pretty smoothly. We hope to be able to sign off in the middle of next week. I’ve also been tackling more AWS conversions for our internal data monitoring jobs, and handling a bunch of new Jira customization requests.
- Josh: JMP and JMP Live 17.1 installer testing. Created a few Confluence documents to help folks with publishing to JMP Live due to self-signed certificated. Resolved some firewall connection issues from AWS to machines that are still inside the SAS network. Working on creating groups in our test active directory.
- Hunter: JMP 17.1 installer testing, met with the Enterprise Client Management Team to discuss two BeyondTrust tickets I had opened, assisted Aaron with reproducing a crash and creating sample log files for JMP-15822 and responded to several JMP 18 EA 1 tracks.
- Lisa: Worked on 17.1 installer testing, updated a couple of Create Feature Request Screen items in Jira, and reviewed EA tracks.
- Anna: 17.1 installer testing. Verifying and tracking issues.
System/Host Testing-Beijing
Data Discovery
- Evan: Passing along Discovery EU feedback and filing Jiras. Added scripting and action recording for Subset with Filtered Rows. Added vectorization for Where with Or and And. Adding vectorization for Where with Is Missing and other comparison functions.
- Dan S: Continued work on Group Platform for By & multiple-Y. Fixes for Data Grid Display and focus in Modal Dialogs.
Note from Shannon
Looking forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with some Irish stew later, and hoping for some more bracket busting results in this weekend’s games! This is what makes the tournament so fun. Have a wonderful weekend! This one is for my 11-year-old son Hunter who is very into Spongebob right now…
