Demo Starter: Prepared Demos for SE Development
Purpose
A project to collect and organize prepared demo “starters” for SE development. The primary audience is new SE’s with less than 2 years’ experience. More experienced SE’s might use it occasionally, especially if they are working with an unfamiliar topic or vertical. The example demo starters are 15 min or less and are intended to be a short demo or a starting point to expand on for a more in-depth demo.
How are topics chosen?
There will be an approved list of topics.
Where will the material be stored?
Most of the material will be stored as case studies in the technical reference library. This is especially convenient for larger files like videos. Material can also be stored in the framework set up for the training starter and most SE’s already have OneDrive synched to the files.
What is the scope?
Each topic will have a minimum complement of supporting material that includes.
Required Material
- Demo guide with all the items listed below as a post in the technical reference library in the SE User Community
- Demo Journal (standard format, see attached)
- Data
- Data should be sharable with customers
- Demo video
- The video should follow best practices of Relevance, Brevity, Simplicity and Impact.
- The video should follow best practices of the great demo. Show the conclusion first. Repeat at the end.
- The duration of the demos should be short, 5 minutes for most and no more than 15 minutes. Perhaps there will be exceptions for longer demos but only rarely when necessary.
Demo Guide Post in SE Technical Reference Community
For examples, see DS2 Quality Overview and DS3 Visual Data Discovery posts in the community.
The posts will have the prefix DS (next available number) (demo topic). For example, DS2 Quality Overview.
Attach journal, dataset and any additional materials to the post.

Who will assemble the demo materials?
Each topic will be completed by (assigned to) an SE and all SE’s will have the opportunity to contribute. Most topics can be assembled using recently completed customer demos. Some topics (like advanced subjects) may need to be assigned so they are ready and available before they are needed. When material from a recent demo is used, it must be generalized so it can be used for other/any customers.
What’s the benefit?
- New SE’s can become productive much faster
- Sharing of best practices. Presumedly, the material will be assembled by the most knowledgeable SE’s and/or using material that was proven successful in a customer engagement.
- Foster’s ideals of Relevance, Brevity, Simplicity and Impact. New SE’s will experience this from the beginning and all SE’s will practice it preparing material.
- Material can be standardized, tweaked and updated. Perhaps a “good presentation” can be replaced with an “even better presentation”.
- Better support for vertical markets, especially ones that are concentrated in one or a few territories. These territories are very good in those verticals. It would be nice to share that expertise with other territories that encounter the same vertical.
- Time savings and force multiplier on preparing commonly encountered demos.
