Hello everyone,
I’ve put together a demo video for using the Functional Data Explorer tool in JMP Pro 17 for the analysis of fermentation batch data. This is a great example that will quickly catch the interest of bioprocess scientists and enable them to more effectively use their process data.
The example uses sensor data and production values from a definitive screening design publication from Laura Walls (former PhD student at The University of Edinburgh, paper attached). The aims were to maximise the production of taxol through media optimisation, but the platereader used also collected a large amount of sensor data that was only used ‘by eye’
Overview
Who would find this useful?
- Groups focusing on microbial or mammalian culture for the production of bioproducts (i.e. monoclonal antibodies, antibiotics, supplements etc.).
- Particularly useful for those who use small scale bioreactors/plate readers that can apply DoE-style studies easily. Look out for the mention of equipment such as the Ambr250 and Ambr15 (Sartorius), Biolector/Robolector (Beckman Coulter), Shake Flask Reader (Kuhner) and MiniBio (Applikon).
Business value
- Better process understanding - if the scientists can identify ‘good’ and ‘bad’ runs from their on-line sensor readings they are better equipped to catch ‘warning signs’ in fermentation batches and correct. Batches can cost thousands to run which only gets more and more expensive as the scale increases. Better knowledge will help to prevent batch loss.
- Increased process development/scale up speed – quicker identification of beneficial process parameters speeds up R+D without the need for additional runs.
Scientific value
- Linking sensor reading trends/patterns to the incline/decline of productivity.
- Improved communication of results (X by Y graphing of numerous bioreactors v. one profiler)
- Easy data handling (import/preparation) and handling (smoothing, filtering etc.)
- Advanced DoE – moving away from single outputs to functional outputs using data that has already been collected.
