Product Management is actively triaging feature requests from the wish lists in the Product Management Jira project. Once there is agreement to work on a feature request, PM clones the feature request to the development project. If you see any items in the PM Project that you are interested in working on for 18, please comment on the issue or reach out to Sarah Sylvestre and she can clone it to your project. This ensures that Jira automations work appropriately. Any questions, please contact Sarah!
Welcome to the JMP Development Update for February 23, 2023!
We are a few short weeks away from the planned date for creating final installer candidates for JMP 17.1. As a reminder, updater installers for JMP 17.1 will be available to all customers via support.sas.com. More information about how we expect to deliver releases as our release process transitions from SAS to JMP are captured here. Thanks to Bob Hickey for putting together that page!
Improving JMP’s telemetry collection efforts for 17.1 and 18.0 has been a collective effort championed by JMP Product Management. With JMP 18 EA1 now in the hands of customers, we are beginning to receive anonymously submitted details about customers’ JMP activity during different sessions. Customers must opt into sharing, and while we do not connect customer names to their telemetry details, we can group reports submitted from the same install. John Schroedl shares:
Servers and processes are keeping up with the load now that it’s sent during every JMP session thanks to the work of Dave White, Myron Chandler and the Beijing testing team. So far, we’ve gotten 55 users to opt-in and have 22,274 records as of this morning. As this is the first real usage, there are glaring holes in our coverage such as not recording the Table menu items. We’re quickly developing a list of work for EA2 to plug holes. Thanks to Evan and Shannon for discussion, script snippets, and data wrangling to understand how it’s going. Obviously, everyone would love to dig into the data and also learn more about the APIs available to improve coverage. So, we plan to do an R&D presentation on what’s available soon.
Some trivia based on just 6 days of data:
- Median time to first launch of Graph Builder is 8 min, 8 seconds with the fastest clocking in at 8 seconds into the session.
- One aggressive scripter accounts for nearly 25% of all our data, running Discriminant over 1300 times the first day.
- Top 10 launched platforms: Discriminant, Graph Builder, Contingency, Fit Least Squares, Distribution, Survival, Model Dialog, Tabulate, Neural, Bivariate
- Here’s an OS breakdown so far by # of users.

Thanks to Audrey Shull for sharing this Jira Tip of the Week about keyboard shortcuts!
To find this list at any time, go to the question mark icon in the top right of Jira and look for Keyboard Shortcuts in the list. My favorite recently discovered shortcuts are 1) the Quick Search ‘/’ In any list of Jira issues, and 2) using ‘j’ and ‘k’ in any list of Jira issues to move the selection up and down, then ‘o’ to navigate into it.

JMP Development Updates
DOE
- Congratulations to the DOE team on the occasion of a new patent release! It is entitled Interactive Graphical User Interface for Customizable Combinatorial Test Construction and was issued on 2023-01-24 as U.S. Patent No. 11,516,690. You can find a copy on the SAS Sharepoint site for Issued Patents.
- Brad: JQT asked for a minor revision on the paper about mixed level screening. Chris Nachtsheim, Ryan, and I are hoping to submit quickly. Caleb King and I are getting good results so far from our proposed alternative to Lenth’s method for the analysis of unreplicated factorial experiments.
- Caleb: Started doing prep work for the new ALT platform. I’ve also been helping Brad on a new alternative to Lenth’s method for analyzing saturated designs. We’ve been making great progress!
- Peng: Factor list refactoring work in DOE.
Host
- Paul N:
- Getting the direct linkage of embedded Python running again in macOS.
- Public Map server URL to move to new Open Street Map server early next week, likely Monday. Old server will be kept around for a week or so at another URL, before it will be decommissioned.
- Updated curl in JMP 18.0 and 17.2 to curl 7.88.1 released this Monday. Vulnerabilities in 7.87.0 are 3 new mediums that do not affect JMP because we do not enable the options that are vulnerable and do not build with the vulnerable backend. As a result, not updating 17.1, but did make the update in 17.2 and 18 to the version with these fixed.
- JMP 17.1 Security scanning tickets, sub-tickets all marked for review or competed:
- Michael H: Removed the “SAS Integration” feature from JMP 18. This removes items from the main menu, toolbars, JMP Starter, Preferences, Scripting Index, etc. Please add that I had a lot of help from John Schroedl. Details are in JMP-15601.
- Aaron: JMP Live changes for SAS Integration removal. Publish support for not generating or sending an html5 report file if it’s going to get immediately replaced anyway due to selected data options. Limited FileSpec warning dialogs to 3 per session. oooContinued jira triage for 18.0.
- John Schroedl: Telemetry processing and SAS Integration removal with Michael.
HTML5
JMP Live
- Aurora: 18.0: Finished work on access control for upcoming file import (e.g. CSV) feature. Continued work on delete user feature. Fixed publish bug in HTML validation checker (thanks to Aaron Andersen for finding the cause). Miscellaneous: Helping with candidate selection for open JMP Live position. Preparation for Discovery.
Statistics
- Laura C-S: Pushed the last changelist to implement Robust Inference in SEM. It’s now available in the main RTM. I’m super excited about this because in 80% of presentations I’ve given, a person always asks about the normality assumption in SEM. This is the widely-accepted solution to non-normality with continuous data. I also finished making images and writing a blog post to promote Multiple-Group Analysis in SEM; it’s now submitted for review. Lastly, I got news of an article accepted in the Child Development journal where I used JMP’s SEM platform for some complex analyses. I hope this exposes more people to the existence of SEM in JMP and our beautiful path diagrams!

John Sall:
- Preliminary fix for a bug in Hierarchical Cluster where the CCC criterion was incorrect in 17 for column-standardized. (JMP-15703)
- In Design Space Profiler add a command "Get Midpoints from Profiler" and more Simulator distribution choices. (JMP-14553)For Fit Response Screening - fix thread access collisions by creating an RSide object for each
- thread (and Dave Barbour fixed a progress bar threading issue). Now it runs a case of 1501 rows, 1501 random columns, and 4612 switch columns in 2 hours and 48 minutes on a Mac Studio Ultra M1 with 20 cores, producing 6.9 million BLUP estimates. Also finished supporting Mivque faster estimates through the Maximum Iterations=0 option. (JMP-15593)Model Dialog removed the command 'Submit to SAS'. 'Create SAS Job" still is implemented, since it doesn't use IOM. (JMP-15601)
- Fit Mixed and Fit Least Squares now use Match clauses instead of long If clauses for random effect conditional prediction formulas. This changes the formula evaluation time from 10 minutes to near instant for a tall case with 14,000 levels of a categorical effect. (JMP-15596)
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Finished Scripting Index updates for Survival and Fit Life by X, addressed feedback from L10N on various RSM chapters in the documentation, met with Mia and others to discuss future of Statistics Index, New Features document, and the Sample Index.
- Karen: This week I got my laptop running, travel for the reunion booked, and can now get back to documenting fun stuff.

Working on a usability study for the Model tab in Easy DOE, collaborating with Mark, Ryan, and Joseph. Updating the Usability Study Tool to incorporate feedback from Mark Bailey, Mia Stephens and Ryan Lekivetz.
Product Management
- Bryan F: This week has been busy as I've been coding, testing, and debugging usability scripts in Javascript. The purpose is to allow unmoderated usability tests at Discovery. Users will be provided with instructions on how to record their session to video, while the script tracks the time they spend on each page and records whether they use hints. Additionally, users will fill out surveys as they work through the script. Our ultimate goal is to develop a web application after the conference, which will enable us to send out links to anyone for unmoderated studies.
- Dan V: Met with Daniel and Sarah S to kick off the conversation about the My.JMP experience in JMP in the future. A draft proposal/idea is here and Daniel and Sarah will begin creating wireframes and writing user stores.
Development Operations
- Myron: JMPTOOL-662 – add JMPLanguage to telemetry. JMPTOOL-597 – generate help for 17.0. JMPTOOL-582 – generate help for 17.1 and 18.0

Data Discovery
- Dan S: Added column switcher prompt dialog to Dashboard Builder, and fixed problem with multiple switchers in a dashboard. Session files will now create scripts that retain "standalone" column switchers, which may be linked to multiple platforms. Fixed some issues with missing value codes in the Data Filter, and issues with TextBox saving JSL changes out of order (script does not reproduce report). Continued focus work.
- Xan: Updated Missing Value Code support in Term. Defaulting to merge MVCs into one score if you opt into scoring of missing with EScoreMissing::Yes. Use the new EScoreMissing::StoredValues if you want the original MVC value. Adding explicit user control over how Overlay variable is graphically encoded (by color, by style, or not).
- Evan: Looked at initial v18 telemetry data for info about popup searching and filed bugs found during that process. Pushed the initial version of JSL Where which is a high-performance replacement for Loc, <
- Ernest: Adding Workflow prompting framework.
Note from Shannon
I’m sure no JMP developers have this issue, it’s just me and my JSL…!
Hope you all have a great weekend!
