More (questions) on filling out rows with formulas

Question

Hi, I have a challenge with a data table, that is imported from Excel (filled out manually by a lab technician). The data table looks like above. I want 2 things:

1) Fill out with the label which is a character.

2) Fill out with a counter (sequence) that numbers the empty rows. Note that for R0003 there are only 3 rows. The formula/script should be able to account for this.

I have the fill out with character approximately in place, but am struggling with the second.

This situation is common in Excel worksheets. Another solution is available for interactive editing without a formula or a script as an add-in, Data Table Tools. With this add-in installed, you select Add-ins > Data Table Tools > Data Into Columns > Span Empty Cells. Select the data table and data column as the original source, then determine how you want the update to appear.

Based on the image of the data table you provided, here is a formula that will create the sequence number you want

If( Lag( :Filled out ) != :Filled out,
	counter = 0
);
counter = counter + 1;
