Welcome to the JMP Development Update for February 17, 2023
Thanks to everyone for all the work on JMP 18 EA1! Mia reports that product management invited over 400 users to join the EA program this week, and over 125 invitations have already been accepted. JMP 18 EA1 is now available to JMP staff and EA members via My JMP. We are already receiving telemetry and beta feedback and expect that to ramp up as more customers download and install.
Please note that product management is not yet inviting additional users to join the program. They will be ready to expand the program sometime next week, so please hold tight on new invitations for now. Please see the Early Adopters FAQ for more details about the program. And a reminder that JMP staff do not need to join the EA program in order to access EA downloads. However, if you have a SalesForce license you need to access My JMP through SalesForce for now (i.e. don’t use my.jmp.com). Refer to the email from Jeff Perkinson for more information.
Thanks very much to Taylor Ferguson from the JMP User Enablement team for presenting the results of the Annual JMP User Survey for 2022 at this week’s JMP dev meeting! Nothing like using JMP to present details on our JMP users! I loved how Taylor shared the results in a series of JMP graphs, but also how she talked about what she learned from analyzing the 2021 results and how that guided improvements to the survey for this iteration. If you missed the meeting, you can find the recording here. Taylor also shared this link to her JMP Live reports showing results for both years:
https://jmplivesales.na.sas.com:3501/spaces/USERENABLEMENT/posts/w8_HPdTy9P9yzytZmN76h/reports (As Michael Goff from the JMP Live team commented in the meeting chat, you can log in to that JMP Live server using your active directory credentials.)
Thanks to Audrey Shull for sharing this Jira Tip of the Week –
No more :OPEN tags! Please used Planned Version instead to indicate intent to fix, or to suggest the version where you think a fix should be considered. Fix Version should be empty now while an item is Initiated or Developing, so remember to add the appropriate Fix Version value when you make a fix and move the issue to Test-Ready. (Note: there are no changes to the WEBJMP project or process, but all other R&D projects are affected.)
Thanks very much to Audrey for working through all phases of this Planned Version transition! Also, big thanks to everyone who responded to her questions as she reviewed and updated items with older :OPEN tagged releases to bring them up to date. Also, a special thank you to Evan McCorkle and Aaron Andersen for taking the time today to update Planned Version values to reflect current JMP 18 priorities.

JMP Development Updates
Host
- John Schroedl: Pushed fix for common crash when launching JMP from Excel but JMP has not completed licensing. Clean up and work with Myron in anticipation of receiving customer telemetry data with EA1 any day now. Moving forward with initial work on host edit control which could allow screen readers to know about our edit fields. Thanks to Dan Schikore for discussion there. Investigated a WebView2 issue which turns out to be a Microsoft bug; thanks to Bob Hickey for an installer change and a lot of help working through this one. 17.2 reviews. New icons.
- Paul N:
- The new JMP Map Server for versions < 16 has been tested and will soon go live. It’s been moved into a staging area for final testing before making the final URL change.
- Working with Bryan on getting the updated 94M8 SAS jars into 17.1. Getting PLSR tickets created for 17.1 so we have a place to put our scanning results. Also, with support of Cathy Jones in creating the PLSR tickets, we also should be good in the SAS systems so that they will know a 17.1 release will occur. Blackduck scanning of 18 and 17.1 projects. Triage and cleanup of misidentified components in Blackduck.
- Began creating Confluence pages detailing current Map Server Configuration and setup. (Edits are in the map server page under the category Useful Information).
- Began a Confluence page in my home space with thoughts on how to improve JMP’s Python integration titled ‘Python Integration – The next step’. It’s a work in progress, but details JMP current issues and what I believe to be the best path forward in resolving them to make it a highly desired feature that becomes a pleasure for Python programmers to use.
HTML5
JMP Live
- Michael G: Update JMP Live 18.0 and 17.2 to use Node 18. Node 16 will be out of support by the time 17.2 releases. Held first JMP Live string review using new process. Added friendly message when user attempts to view a report that hasn’t been generated yet. Added separate folder feed on top of the usual reports feed to help navigate within spaces. Fix regression with overflow scrolling when publishing many reports. Internal & External user study using report view prototype was a good success.
- Aurora: 18.0: Continued work on access control for upcoming file import (e.g. CSV) feature. Started work on delete user feature. Miscellaneous: Helping with candidate selection for open JMP Live position. Preparation for Discovery.
Statistics
- Jianfeng: Working on getting rid of the TK extension for exact tests and porting the original exact test source code from SAS to JMP- a much bigger project than I thought. There are a lot of hurdles to overcome, including memory leaks and converting old C style code to modern C++. Thanks to Chris Gotwalt and Dan Schikore for their help with this process. Currently there are total 7 exact tests in JMP. I am pleased to report that the Fisher exact test and exact Cochran Armitage trend test are working now. It will take me some time and patience to complete this task. But I think it will benefit JMP in the long run.
- Elizabeth: Added Number of Rows and Sum of Frequencies (as a proxy for number of rows used when there are missing values) to the reports in Mixed and GLMM. Added save options for raw marginal and conditional predicted values in Mixed if users don’t need the formula (to save the cost of formula evaluation if the data table is large). Investigated a numeric issue reported with the AR(1) repeated measures structure.
- Laura C-S: Continued guiding two P&G customers on how to use SEM for their longitudinal models. I reviewed the accuracy of the model specification and helped interpret their results. While doing analyses for these customers, I found a crash with the SEM profiler and fixed it. Continued work on robust inference, specifically revising the chi-square difference tests to make sure they’re valid with robust inference.
- Annie: Continuing work on getting a phase variable working for Short Run Control Charts.
Stat Documentation
- Karen: My computer connection issue was due to a SAS Lab*firewall*contractor status interaction. My computer was moved back to the one room where I can connect to it and a laptop has been shipped to me. Once that is up and running they will decommission my old machine. Otherwise working on small Jira issues.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Extending the usability study tool with Jacob. Documenting the tool in Confluence with Jacob. Reviewed IDF for new factor list with DOE team. Presented tool to First 5 Minutes team. Attended virtual seminar about Deep Learning techniques for adaptable clinical design by ASA Philadelphia. Assisted Sam with anomaly in customer F2 analysis with Fit Curve. Verified JMP-15072 for Jacob. Discuss set up for usability studies within EA program with Mia. Answer questions in JMP community.
- Jacob: Met with Joseph Morgan, Evan McCorkle, Xan Gregg, and Mark Bailey to discuss testing JSL Applications. I am currently working on new tests for Sample Size Explorers using Mimic. Worked on the Usability Study Tool. I demoed the tool to the First Five Minutes working group and updated the tool to include feedback from others.
- Tonya: Testing short run control charts. Documentation review. Beta feedback.
Product Management
- Bryan F: Have been extremely busy creating usability tests and related code, which has kept me occupied. In addition, I'm happy to share that I conducted a couple of Figma usability tests with 50 external testers and have reviewed multiple designs.
Technical Support
- Duane: It’s been a challenging week in TS! Salesforce (the company) applied maintenance to the product and it introduced numerous ill-effects for our Service Cloud instance. Candice and team have been handling our issues and providing a lot of attention helping us work. Several in TS are involved in the My JMP project, and we are now getting involved in various JMP events. Definitely not dull in TS! Here are the TS JMP Live reports, and the usual plot below. Also, here’s the Jira filter showing the tickets reported by TS for the last 14 days.

Development Operations
- Bob: Worked with John Schroedl to determine best way to handle the installation of WebView2 runtime to account for issues discovered in JMP testing. Changes made for 17.2, 18.0. Uploaded JMP 18 EA1 installers to My JMP, then confirmed EA downloads via My JMP as accurate when published. Documented software release process as we transition from SAS to JMP LLC.
- Myron: Fixing & updating more help builds (17.0, 17.1, 18.0). Setting up and running telemetry Jenkins jobs to capture and process data. Debugging Mac crash process to figure out its occasional weirdness. Did some re-indexing on XDB unit test tables to speed up queries.

Note from Shannon
If you’ve lived in North Carolina, then you already know that we have more than the typical four seasons. I didn’t realize people had worked it out so carefully, but this list apparently is supported by the data. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes: Looks like we are in Fool’s Spring at the moment…hope you all have a great weekend!
