Votre ou vos diplômes collégiaux ou universitaires étaient-ils liés à votre rôle actuel chez JMP ?
Oui. Cela m'a ouvert les yeux sur la possibilité de résoudre des problèmes d'ingénierie avec des statistiques. Ma formation est en génie mécanique avec un accent sur la mécatronique (un hybride de génie électrique et mécanique). Aujourd'hui, le cursus de mon université ne comprend aucun cours de statistique. Lorsque j'étais étudiant de premier cycle, j'ai eu la chance d'avoir un professeur qui, avec beaucoup d'efforts, a convaincu le département d'inclure deux cours de statistique : Statistiques de base et Métrologie et fiabilité. J'ai pu appliquer ce que j'ai appris dès mon stage.
En dehors de votre expérience chez JMP, quel a été votre a) premier emploi, b) votre meilleur emploi et c) votre pire emploi ?
Mon premier travail consistait à livrer de nouveaux journaux. Mon premier emploi à la sortie de l'université était celui d'ingénieur de recherche.
Mon meilleur travail était en tant que chef d'équipe de développement de tests. Notre équipe a développé et amélioré des tests destructifs et non destructifs pour mesurer les attributs de qualité, les caractéristiques de performance et les propriétés des matériaux des plaquettes de coupe en diamant polycristallin et de nombreux matériaux utilisés pour les fabriquer. C'était amusant parce qu'il y avait beaucoup de données et de nombreuses occasions d'utiliser la résolution de problèmes statistiques. Le travail était gratifiant parce que les membres de l'équipe travaillaient ensemble pour résoudre des problèmes assez difficiles. Essayez de rechercher sur Google un équipement de test de diamant polycristallin et trouvez tout ce que vous pouvez acheter ! Cette résolution collaborative de problèmes a favorisé un environnement où nous avons tous pu développer et développer rapidement nos compétences. J'ai également pu déployer des formations formelles DOE, MSA, Fiabilité et MATLAB pour tous les ingénieurs et techniciens qui ont exprimé un intérêt. Ma plus grande mesure de réussite dans ce rôle est de voir mes anciens coéquipiers progresser dans leur carrière. L'un est un responsable de l'ingénierie, un autre est un scientifique des données et un autre est un scientifique principal. Oui. Passer d'un poste de responsable de l'ingénierie à celui d'ingénieur système a été une grande transition. Je cherchais d'autres opportunités depuis quelques années. Mon objectif était de changer de carrière avant d'avoir 50 ans. Il est difficile de trouver de nouvelles opportunités en vieillissant. JMP représentait une opportunité d'adopter une stratégie d'activation de l'analytique qui m'a permis, ainsi qu'à mes équipes, de réussir dans un bac à sable plus grand et à temps plein. L'habilitation a été et est toujours la partie la plus gratifiante de ma carrière.
Avez-vous eu des inquiétudes à propos d'un changement?
Croissance. J'ai l'habitude de développer et d'affiner mes compétences, je m'attends donc à une évolution personnelle et professionnelle dans mon rôle d'ingénieur système et peut-être à de nouveaux rôles à l'avenir. J'espère continuer à grandir et à m'amuser chez JMP jusqu'à ma retraite.

Chez JMP, Chuck Boiler, Pete Hersh et Jerry Fish ( @JerryFish ). À l'extérieur, Bill Kappele (partenaire et mentor JMP) est la raison pour laquelle je suis un utilisateur JMP et m'a été très utile et m'a soutenu dans la mise en œuvre du changement. Tous ont répondu à de nombreuses questions et ont encouragé à postuler et à passer un entretien. Chaque travail technique que j'ai eu a été le résultat de quelqu'un qui m'a aidé à trouver et à ouvrir des portes, puis m'a encouragé à traverser. Ce mouvement n'était pas différent. J'ai eu beaucoup d'aide.
Quels conseils donneriez-vous aux employés de JMP qui envisagent de changer de rôle ?
Trouvez quelque chose dans lequel vous êtes doué. Je crois que cette découverte peut se produire lorsque vous relevez de nouveaux défis et que vous vous portez volontaire pour soutenir des projets et des initiatives. Soyez audacieux et n'ayez pas peur de sortir de votre zone de confort. Adoptez un état d'esprit de débutant et soyez à l'aise avec le fait d'être un apprenant plutôt qu'un expert.
