Special announcement: Thanks very much to Eric Hill for sharing the news that the JMP Live team is hiring! Eric notes, “We are looking for someone with both C++ and JavaScript experience. Welcome to the JMP Development Update for February 3, 2023!
We are now past our JMP 17.1 Code Freeze date and are looking forward to the creation of final installer candidate installers in about a month. As a reminder, if you encounter any showstopper issues for 17.1 from this point on, please continue to follow the process by discussing the issue with your manager first, and then if you agree a late fix is appropriate, pushing the fix to 18.0 for testing or creating a test build for your tester (if the issue is 17.1 only). Once testing has confirmed the fix, please request approval. If there are objections, approvers may request a meeting to discuss the potential fix. I’ll be glad to answer any questions if needed!
We are preparing to kick off the EA program in collaboration with product management. We have reached the freeze date for JMP 18 EA1, and Jim Borek will branch EA files as of the end of the day today and installers will be created early next week. QA teams will be checking those out in the coming week.
Mia says that initial invitations to join the EA program should go out next week, and we’re hoping to officially launch the program and make JMP 18 EA1 available the week of Feb 13 via My.JMP. After the EA program is launched, JMP staff are more than welcome to invite users to join the program. We’ll provide more information once EA1 is available.
All new features and functionality that will be highlighted in the EA program are captured on this JMP 18 Single Source Document. Product management is still compiling this information for EA1, focusing on what we’d like to share with EA members for testing and feedback. We’re already working on how to better use the EA program for feedback and usability studies. If anything is missing, please reach out to Mia Stephens.
Speaking of JMP 18 development, thanks to John Sall for sharing this link to a How to use Taskpool Confluence page where David White documented the new classes for threading. John notes that he is starting to update his code to switch to using these classes. With JMP 18 development in full swing, I’m recruiting for speakers to share progress at March JMP dev meetings. Just let me know if you’d like to present!
If you have any especially cool images you’ve made with JMP, then listen up! We are looking for 7 distinctive images that show off graph options in JMP products. We have an opportunity to display these at JMP Discovery Europe. If you have something interesting to share, please send it along to Sara Doudt, Mia Stephens and Jeff Hudgins with your image as well as the data and script to replicate it.
Here’s a mockup of what the setup looks like with some example images taken from existing marketing materials:

Audrey Shull shared this Jira Tip of the Week:
Thank you to Sarah Sylvestre for making changes in our Jira configuration to make Origin a required field. This means that when you enter new Jira issues (Epics, Feature Requests, Stories, Bugs) you must fill in an origin field value. Details on what the different values mean can be perused here.

Existing issues won’t be affected by this change, but please try to add an Origin value when you’re editing an existing issue, if you see information noted in associated comments or tracks that can help you make the determination. Thanks!

JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Dave B: Fixed a boxplot hover label bug. Nick setup a new AWS VM that I am working with to see how well the jmprunner image tests can run on it. Added font support for table box column titles and data rows and column box data rows.
New Window( "Mountains",
tb = Table Box(
scb1=String Col Box( "Mountain", {"K2", "Delphi", "Kilimanjaro", "Grand Teton"} ),
scb2=String Col Box( "Mountain", {"K2", "Delphi", "Kilimanjaro", "Grand Teton"} ),
Number Col Box( "Elevation (meters)", {8611, 681, 5895, 4199} )
)
);
tb << Set Data Font Name( "Consolas" );
tb << set title font name("Broadway");
scb1 << Set Data Font Style( "Italic" );

- Xan: Header graph work, including dots + faint lines for when line chart becomes too dense.

- Dan S: Work on session files to better support platforms that don't have a data table. Changing JRP file syntax and open process to ensure that the file spec is correctly attached to the opened window. Reviewed and refactored a lot of code to use newReport() instead of newBoxHead() for creating reports - the latter results in reports that cannot be saved and is now deprecated for reports (other window classes are still fine). Fix for map shape boundaries in a Project (17.2). Continued work on focus issues.
- Evan: Added Path Variable listing as an example to the SI. Switched Fit Y by X launcher to use newLabel. Filed bug with Microsoft for broken multi-line code snippet copy/paste in Teams. Looking at current state of Sample Data Index and current Sample Data tables. Filed several bugs related to that work. Brainstorming improvements to formula evaluation.
DOE
- Caleb: Merged some last minute sample size explorer bugs into 17.1. Thanks to Jacob for catching them and to JMP approvers for their quick replies! Thankfully, they were easy fixes. Worked on some alternative diagnostic measures for MSA design. I’ll be reaching out to our resident JMP MSA experts for feedback. Finally, I attended the Reliability and Maintainability Symposium in Orlando, FL last week with Peng and Rajneesh. It was my first time at this conference and it was interesting to see the current trends and research going on in the Reliability Engineering sector. A big highlight of the week was getting to show off the Functional Data Explorer to a student!

Host
- John Schroedl: Updated JMP Starter and various portable prompt dialogs to use the Label control (newLabel) instead of draw text (newText). This allows screen readers to discover and read the text to visually impaired users. Various fixes to label. Looking into text centering issue with drawn text with help from Evan. Looked into crash on exit with telemetry.
- Paul: Looking at ways to improve performance of new map server’s tile rendering. Reading up and researching database administration for PostgreSQL database and reading up on PostGIS, the geo-spatial extensions to PostgreSQL.
HTML5

Note from Shannon
Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women in the US? At the WIN session focused on this topic today, a speaker mentioned that men and women may experience different symptoms when a heart attack is imminent. This is such good information, I thought I’d share.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and despite the cold, try to get in some activity to help keep your heart healthy! :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:
