Did your college or university degree(s) relate to your current role at JMP?
I think they are related. I majored in Industrial Foreign Trade in the business school. And I developed interest in economics, econometrics, and time series. When I was a junior, I pursued a second major in Computer Science at the engineering school. And I have a broad interest in computer science.

I was an office clerk in a small importing-exporting trade company after graduating from college. It was my first job. I believe that was usually the case for many youngsters in cities at and before that age in China. It was unlikely for youngsters to work unless they went to a vocational school, or due to extreme family difficulties. It was the first time in my life that I started to think about what I wanted for my life. And I am glad that I had that time. Best job, worst job? I only had one job before my current one. So, the answer is obvious, LOL.
Have you made a major career transition? If so, what was it and how did you know you were ready for a change?
Not only a career transition but also a life-changing decision. I was not able to advance my career in my first job, I could not find mentors, and struggled to advance my career on my own. The job did not bring a purpose to my life. I looked around, and with a passion for programming, and confidence in my math, I pursued an advanced degree in Statistics.
Did you have any concerns about making a change?
I was young. I had nothing to lose.
What were the first things you did when you decided that you were ready to change jobs?
Studied English to pass GRE. My college grade was okay in English. But to pass GRE, it required dedication. It was not easy for me. Foreign language was not my strong suit.

No. The only thing clear to me was the requirement on advance math. I did not even know programming was a desired skill for modern statistics. The recognition of my programming skills came as a surprise when professors dumped SAS programming tasks on me, and I figured it out quickly.
Who were the people that were instrumental in helping you make the job switch successfully, and how did they help?
There was only my parents' support at the time when I decided to change careers. But along the journey, there are many people who made an impact on where I am today. Three professors at NIU: Bala Hosmane, Mohsen Pourahmadi, and Alan Polansky. Three professors at NCSU: Bill Swallow, Marc G. Genton, and Peter Bloomfield. They all identified my passion for programming and encouraged and helped me to pursue the career, by challenging me with programming tasks and granting me a scholarship to support my study.
At JMP, John Sall and Brad Jones offered me a fellowship to support my studies and gave me the opportunity to work on an exciting product. Chris Gotwalt influenced my analytical thinking in statistics and his suggestions became an important part of my dissertation. Chris continued to support my work over the years. Last but not least William Q. Meeker from Iowa State Univ. and Leo Wright, who I worked with very closely for all the years on the development of our reliability platforms. Without these people, I wouldn't be where I am today.
What advice do you have for JMP employees who are thinking about changing their roles?
Find the passion. Sometimes, passion determines what you will do. Sometimes, you may find passion in what you are already doing. Think about the skill set that you have and what will be required. Sometimes, you may already have the skill set for what you want to do. Sometimes, you may need to acquire additional skills before you can do what you want to do. Identify the purpose your career brings to your life. This brings meaning beyond your career. Find the people who you enjoy working with. Not only what you work on is important, but the people you work with are also important to a satisfying career.

It's clear to me that your passion shines through in your thoughtful attention to detail, and for inserting a lot of practical statistical thinking in your explanations in the service of our scientist & engineer customers. It takes not only a lot of brain power, but real patience, fortitude and enthusiasm to explain things well (and for the right audience).
