Usage MetricsWhat inspired this Wish List Request? We have heard from many strategic customers (Nvidia, Tesla, Rivian, etc.) that other vendors (Minitab, Tableau, among others) are providing detailed usage metrics that help them make business decisions around keeping/growing that software. It is now widely expected that software vendors are including telemetry capabilities to be able to provide details about who is using the software, how often they're using it, and which platforms/tools are being used. This data helps to guide conversations and develop business justifications for champions/advocates to continue using JMP (or other software vendors). Without this data, internal advocates and JMP sales teams are left flying blind when working to renew customers, and in the current economic climate, there is an added level of scrutiny for justifying expenses.
Please describe the new or improved feature or solution you would like to see. JMP should not only be able to provide a list of the named users using the software, but also detailed metrics around how it's being used Customers want this and expect this.
What would the value be to you and/or other users if this new feature is provided? Due to the lack of this capability, we were unsuccessful in growing Nvidia by several hundred users this year, thus impacting JMP's topline revenue by several hundred thousand dollars.
Is this an external customer request? Yes, Nvidia is the latest customer to make this a sticking point, but most of our strategic customers have also reported this same feedback.
Is there a competitive software package that has this feature or solution that we should be aware of? Minitab, Tableau, MS Office products (Excel)
Will this impact a renewal, expansion, or adoption at a customer, and does this put an account at risk if we do not address this? Yes, Nvidia today, and many others in the future

OtherRe: Usage Metrics - Status changed to: AcknowledgedRe: Usage Metrics@nvacca - JMP software comes with a JMP License registration prompt, but users are allowed to "SKIP" through that process. Why not just remove the "SKIP" button. This would allow us as AM's to better understand through Salesforce Lead reports just who is using the software.
Re: Usage MetricsJust had a conversation about this yesterday, and was going to put in a wish list item. I'm happy to see it's already on the list. We're definitely leaving money on the table by not providing a way for our customers to track named users within their organization.
Speaking as someone who just came from "the outside" last year, managing licenses in an organization is hard--while some organizations/people are good at it, some are not. In my previous role, I would have loved to have a) a list of named users so I could ensure we were paying for the right number of licenses, b) communicate with them all via email, and c) a list of which platforms were being used in my organization (preferably with frequency).
One way to accomplish this (straw man that could be definitely improved):
- write a small helper add-in called something like "JMP Site Admin Helper"
- app ties into company's AD services
- site admin registers in add-in as site admin
- Installer somehow knows about this add-in and magically requests a license approval from the site admin. This is the tricky part.
- new users are checked as valid employees, and an approval list is generated/approved in the add-in

Re: Usage Metrics@Daniel_Valente - yes. They're monitoring all those that you mention. With the exception if Figma, I've heard all those names dropped on this issue from time to time. They also mentioned Minitab and Simca in those discussions (though I didn't verify if that's an empty name drop or not).
Re: Usage Metrics - Status changed to: NewIt would be good to understand if customers are monitoring usage in other platforms like Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, Lucid, Tableau, Office 365 and others, which manage user subscriptions and also "active" users. If there is anyone in IT that you are talking to in these meetings that is managing other software like this, it would be beneficial to connect to the Product Management team so we can help build out requirements.
Re: Usage MetricsThanks everyone for their comments and insight here. Certainly seems to be a commonality across our customers and something that is being expected from vendor platforms.
Re: Usage MetricsThanks for posting @nvacca. SABIC asked about this capability yesterday.
Re: Usage MetricsGreat suggestion, Nick. I agree that this is becoming more and more of an expectation rather than a “nice to have.”
Re: Usage MetricsI've had two customers in the past week ask me about this. They definitely want this capability.
Re: Usage MetricsJust about every customer with more than ~20 users I've worked with over the past 8 years has asked about this.
Re: Usage MetricsWe have had several customers this week ask for this very same feature (Tokyo Electron and Diodes) but they are by no means the first nor will they be the last. Thank you for posting, @nvacca.
Re: Usage Metrics@nvacca Great recommendation, Nick! I agree that this is something most customers ask about/expect. Working for several other software providers before joining JMP, I was quite surprised to learn that JMP has no way of tracking usage. Tracking would not only allow our customers to see where and how often the software is being used, but could help JMP uncover customers who may be using the software out of compliance, which would also lead to more selling opportunities.
Re: Usage Metrics - Status changed to: AcknowledgedHi @nvacca, thank you for your suggestion! We have captured your request and will take it under consideration.
Re: Usage MetricsHad another customer ask today about telemetry from JMP. The customer wanted to know who was actually opening the software. Caveat: the customer mentioned this as part of a discussion relating to layoffs/trying to save money.
Re: Usage MetricsHave had several customers ask about this, mostly just for tracking purposes. Below are two separate customers inquiring about this
- "...can we see how many times users log in? We need to know how often this application is used..."
- "If we can't show sustained usage, your application has less value to [company]. If an application loses value to a company, it gets replaced."
