Last week, JMP’s Founder, Chairman, and Head of R&D John Sall (
@John_Sall
) welcomed JMP employees to the 2023 Company Kickoff – our first company-wide in-person kickoff in three years – wearing a festive Happy New Year top hat. The excitement was tangible in the room.
There were close to 90 in-person attendees to the two-day kick-off and 300+ attendees participating globally online.
Sall jumped right into a status update, sharing Covid Omicron variant data, as well as other hot global topics from 2022, including:
-
The Russian invasion of Ukraine.
-
The effects of trade restrictions.
-
Supply chain issues are slowly ameliorating.
-
Economic challenges: jobs are hot, but the market is not; Tech job reductions; inflation and interest rate concerns; and uncertainty for 2023.
“Thankfully,” Sall said, “At JMP we do reasonably well even in challenging times.”
He then shared JMP highlights from 2022:
-
Reopening SAS world headquarters campus: All buildings are fairly empty. Buildings E, F, J, and H are completely empty.
-
We now have flex offices.
-
JMP
®
17 was released in October.
-
Transitions to our own Jira and Confluence instances.
-
Our Winter Thanks potluck lunch event.
And what we can look forward to in 2023:
-
Finish the first iteration of our business structure.
-
Continue recruiting new talent – although fewer hires than in 2022.
-
No new release this year,
JMP
®
18 will be spring of 2024.
-
New renewal pricing and new sales teams should mean good revenue for 2023.
Sall closed his welcome with a reminder slide that he shares each year and thanked everyone for contributing to JMP’s success.

Director of HR Paul Mastropolo (
@Paul_Mastropolo
) shared updates on JMP’s growth in 2022.
“We started 2022 with 375 JMP employees and ended with 456,” he said. “That’s a 21.6% increase. From January [2023] through today we’ve already added 13 new employees – that’s tremendous growth!”
Mastropolo said much of the hiring was associated with new sales teams, and functions including Finance, Legal, and Operations, and acknowledged the efforts of JMP HR Recruiters Christine Bevan, Danielle Rogers, and Macy Shen.
He then shared hiring activity using JMP Software.
“JMP is looking to double our number of intern hires in 2023,” Mastropolo added. “We need to be thoughtful about the universities we partner with – specifically within the science and engineering community and leveraging where we have a strong JMP presence.”

Review of 2022 from the CEO
CEO of JMP Jon Weisz (
@Jon_Weisz
) then took the stage to share a review of 2022 numbers and goals. “2022 was a tough year, but we had a very respectable financial year,” Weisz said.
Financial results:
-
10.9% TSR growth (15% was the 2022 goal).
-
>25% Contribution Margin.
-
$27.8M new license revenue growth (78% of goal).
-
$132.8M TSR revenue (93% of goal).
“What we thought we’d be able to achieve, we did,” Weisz said. “With the caveats that we had a lot of headwinds with currency, and we changed prices and dropped first-year fees significantly.”
All regions had excellent TSR growth. Weisz gave special recognition to EMEA, even with war in Ukraine, and China for staying focused through lockdown.
Weisz also shared how 2022 was a year of change, and what that meant for JMP:
-
New JMP teams in Finance, Legal and HR.
-
New Technical Support System: Salesforce Service Cloud.
-
Implemented new business systems.
-
Changed all product pricing in Q4.
-
JMP Clinical launched as a standalone product.
-
JMP 17 was released!

Legal vision for 2023: Focus on ‘easy’
JMP General Counsel Anissa Knox (
@Anissa_Knox
) took the virtual stage to share the overarching vision for JMP Legal in 2023. “I would currently describe the Legal team as lean and mighty,” Knox said. Knox and Senior Legal Specialist Ericka Pirozzi are currently the only members of the team. In early 2023, she plans to onboard a Senior Legal Counsel, and hopes to add a Junior Attorney or Paralegal in summer 2023.
As for her Legal vision for 2023, she will continue to build business infrastructure and continue to retool business and legal processes, with a focus on ‘easy.’ “JMP should be easy to buy, easy to comply, easy to self-service, easy to renew, easy to upgrade, easy to use, and easy to administer,” Knox said.
Knox says their focus is also on clients, meaning assisting and working for JMP as an entity and JMP employees. “Please know that JMP Legal is here to partner with you,” she said.

JMP Kick-off Day 2

“I hope you’re looking forward to it as much as I am,” Betters said. “As long as everyone is here together, laughing, and working on best practices – I promise it will be fun!”
To meet our financial goals, Weisz says, JMP needs to develop a culture of financial empowerment by editing travel budgets and spending responsibly using the “Rule of 40” (25% margin, 15% growth).
As Robin said, it seems like we have some new best practices for kicking off the year: Share the year's results, paint a vision for the coming year, and watch inspiring videos about the people who make the world better with JMP. And then when the weather is nicer, have an in-person meeting where we can all be together!!!
