Welcome to the JMP Development Update for December 16, 2022!
I know that many people will be heading out over the next week for a well-deserved vacation. FYI that over the winter break, JMP desktop CI builds for Mac and Win and the associated auto-integration project for 18.0 will continue to run. However, Jim plans to disable nightly builds and unit test runs on Christmas Eve and will turn them back on just prior to our return to the office.
JMP 17.1 Doc Freeze is happening at the end of the business day on Wednesday, 12/21/22. Please be aware that this means that JMP doc teams will not be able to make any doc updates related to 17.1 bug fixes integrated after that point. Any changes made after 12/21/22 that impact the doc will have to wait for JMP 18.0 doc work to begin. Similarly, the L10N team has already handed off translations for 17.1 so strings that have been extracted or edited since 17.1 string handoff will appear in English in 17.1 and will be translated during the 17.2 cycle.
We plan to begin Code Approval Mode for JMP 17.1 at the end of the day on 1/6/23, and freeze code for 17.1 on 1/27/23. Please see the Outlook reminder I sent out for details about Approval Mode or see this page about Approval Mode in Confluence for more details.
Finally, thanks to Audrey Shull for sharing the following Jira Tips of the Week! Since we’ve moved into our new cloud instance of Jira, we’ve had much more flexibility to think through changes and improve our project setup and how we collect data about our work. The following items are minor tweaks that we hope will have a big impact, and we’re looking forward to making more improvements in the New Year!
- The Origin of issues is becoming an important thing for JMP to track. Please start filling out this field when you enter or edit issues and pin it so it’s easy to find! See this useful How-To page about the current values (thanks, Shannon). Note that Jira admins will discuss updating the values that appear for Origin and might even make this a required field for the JMP project in the future.
- Have you started using the new Planned Version field yet? Remember that you can use this field to indicate intent to fix instead of adding an :OPEN tag to versions in the Fix Versions field. If you populate Planned Version to indicate the version where you intend to fix an item, simply leave Fix Versions blank and once a fix is pushed, you can add the plain version number to Fix Versions (e.g., 18.0).
General Announcements
- If you’re willing to be a featured employee on Inside JMP, please download a copy of the Get to Know form. Simply fill out the questions and when you’re done, upload it, along with 3 photos of you to the folder. Thank you for helping to make our JMP family a little more familiar!

Working on a discussion of a paper in QREI.
- Peng: Hit a road block on my side of the research with Bill Meeker. Working on it. Other than that, cleaned up several 17.1 items with the help from Caleb and Elizabeth.
Host
- Paul N: Map server is up and running and serving tiles; however, it is sluggish in rendering tiles at high zoom levels. I am in the process of pre-rendering tiles for the various zoom levels and trying to tweak the server configuration files for performance. In terms of network configuration, everything is still pointing to the current legacy map server as I am in the process of testing out JMP’s connection to the new map server, making sure configurations match the same calling convention that prior JMP versions used to call the server. Once it’s confirmed that JMP be served tiles from the new server, we can have the network configuration changed to point to the new machine.
- Michael: Added support for opening .xlsm files (Excel spreadsheet with macros) to Mac JMP to match the Windows JMP support. Upgraded the Mac JMP project file to use the C++20 language variant, matching Windows. Worked with Mayowa and Paul S to get the Template.html file (used as the template for all Interactive HTML reports) built and obfuscated on a Mac Release build, by changing how the obfuscation tool (terser) is invoked so that errors will halt the build and their diagnostics will appear on the build logs.
- Daniel: The new DEV and TEST VPCs have been fully configured and deployed in AWS for our JMP Activation System. This separation allows me to test greater security configurations without causing issues in our production environment!
HTML5
- Mike S: Completed the JMP New User Welcome Kit videos, and submitted a list of issues for fixing in the next update of the Kit. Completed the Acceptable Use of SAS Systems and Networks course. Did more setup of my Mac for development. Continued code familiarization.
- John Powell: Continued discussion about graph reordering and its effect on JMP Live (JMP-14895). Fixed a few hyperlinks to old Confluence. Planned for Whitebox testing. Reviewed Interactive HTML code refactoring work. Attended a JMP Live Git demo. Looked for patterns in handling linked subsets throughout our JavaScript code (JMPHTML-541).
- Praveena: Refactoring the source files loading in unit test, came across an Chrome browser specific issue, found the solution for it. Refactored Segment.js to adopt the class structure and updates the reference of segment in all other segments, unit test. Started refactoring Histogram segment to adopt the class structure.
- Paul Spychala: Working with the HTML team to upgrade more of our codebase to ES6 and beyond. Fixed an issue with the Mac nightly builds not building a working HTML Template.
JMP Live
- Aurora: For 17.1, fixed a bug that kept a user from moving around old reports that had "-N" suffixed IDs. For 18.0, finished removing known obsolete REST API routes. Miscellaneous: Working on Perforce --> Git change for JMP Live. Held two Git demos (for heavy and light users of the JMP Live repo).
