Welcome to the JMP Development Update for December 9, 2022!
It was great to see many Cary folks at the JMP Winter Thanks lunch yesterday! I hope that you had a chance to try some new foods and meet a few new people. I was happy to meet several SAS and JMP people whose names I knew but had not met in person yet. I even found a volunteer for a 2023 dev meeting demo (thanks to Aurora Tiffany-Davis and Eric Hill for the intro)! Big thanks to all our SAS colleagues who help us throughout the year, and much appreciation to everyone from JMP who shopped, cooked, baked, and sent treats from afar for this special event.
We were also fortunate to have Peng Liu, Mark Bailey and Jacob Rhyne present at the JMP Dev meeting yesterday! The DOE team has collaborated on some amazing prototype and usability testing work for their new factor list and they’re very excited to show it off to early adopters when we cut our first JMP 18 EA (planned to freeze in early February). In addition to working through iterations on this specific feature, DOE team members have been active participants in the JMP UX work group and devoted significant time to developing a process that other JMP groups can leverage.
At yesterday’s meeting, we also said congratulations to Bob Hickey and Brad Jones who both celebrated their 25 year anniversary with JMP this month. Thanks to Bob for sharing this picture from their SAS orientation group! You can check out the recording to watch the tributes as well as the demo that followed:

Thanks very much to Audrey Shull for sharing these Jira Tips of the Week!
- If you notice the timestamps in Jira are all in GMT for you, you can set your personal time zone on this settings page: https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/account-preferences. It's much easier to interpret local timestamps than converting from GMT. J
- We encourage you to start using the Planned Version field in Jira. Planned Version is a way for us to show ‘Intent to Fix’ in a different field than ‘Actually Fixed’. We’d like to move towards Fix Version meaning ‘Actually Fixed’ or ‘Actively Being Worked On’ and allowing Planned Version to show intent. This will also mean that the :OPEN tag on our version values will not be needed. Expect to hear more about this in the coming weeks!

Opened a Jira for an issue reported in the JMP Community where New Window()would sometimes open to the bottom of a report instead of the top – already fixed by Dan S. Verified and created image tests for a number of 18/17.1 bugs, notably font related messages not effecting change in ListBoxBox and Plot Col Axis is off with two line column titles. - Sibusizo: Fixing uniform scaling in application of color gradients in cellplot.
DOE
- Peng: Working with Bill Meeker to finalize the section in his research paper, which is related to my work. Started working on factor list prototype again after yesterday’s presentation. It ain’t done yet, more features, more maintenance, into the future!
- Brad: Reviewing two papers for the journal, Quality and Reliability Engineering International.
Host
- Michael H: Worked on preparing JMP for the forthcoming MATLAB that is Apple Silicon-native. This new MATLAB version is currently in beta test and JMP needed some tweaks to properly call it.
- Paul N: Progress on Map Server replacement - this week I succeeded in generating map tiles using the north-america-pacific data set (primarily Hawaii). Now that the main functionality has been test, started the process of loading the planetary scale street map data into the database. Compressed binary source data is ~71Gb, which gets loaded into the PostgreSQL database, creating tables and relationships. Loading the north-america-pacific data took 3 minutes since it’s mostly water. The planetary data load is at 24 hours and counting.
- Daniel: The DEV Activation Server has successfully tested and changes are now being moved to the TEST level for future testing. Work is in progress to upgrade both security and availability for our AWS system, which improve our resilience to region outages.
HTML5
- Mike S: Continued onboarding tasks, including getting familiar with my new Mac and setting it up for development. Began the JMP New User Welcome Kit videos and began looking at our code. Completed the Privacy by Design course.
- John Powell: Investigated an issue with graphs going blank in JMP Live (JMP-14895). Helping Mike Stickles settle in. Improved marker selection and hoverlabels to handle overlapping points(JMPHTML-502, JMPHTML-1038).
Statistics
- Annie: Working on adding the new Short Run category of charts to control chart builder, and this week worked a bunch with Xan to override another Graph Builder role-location and finally get the “Part ID” hot spot & drop zone working correctly. (Thank you, Xan!) Now, I’m starting work on importing part-specific information (target & sigma).
- Laura: Submitted my work to get to the Simulation Experiment in the Profiler Simulator to respect linear constraints (JMP-4281). I did this by calling the Fast Flexible Filling designs via internal JSL to use as my experiment and adding support where needed for all of the simulated values to obey constraints.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Documentation updates for 17.1, specifically for SEM, Mixed Models, and GLMM.
- Karen: Working on misc. 17.1 defects ahead of DOC freeze.

Verifying Jira tickets and investigating potential performance issues. Started working on tool for future usability studies with Mark Bailey.
- Tonya: Updating unit tests due to recent ANOMV changes. Bug verification. Unit test clean up.
Product Management
- Bryan F: Attended a second meeting with UserTesting to get a demonstration of their software. I provided some feedback to Evan and Ernest concerning JMP Search and Workflow builder, respectively. I also provided feedback on the new DOE factor input table design. I met with Greg Kraus to discuss how to update VPATs for JMP 17 and began updating them. I plan to publish those next week. I asked John Schroedl to present some experimental UI work using Telerik theming, which he graciously did. Finally, I coordinated with Dan Schikore on a potential improvement to accessing tooltip help within JMP tables.
Technical Support
- Wendy: In years past, Tech Support has enjoyed being invited to Winter Thanks. This year, we enjoyed participating in hosting the event, as this is the first one since we were moved into JMP! Thank you to everyone who helped to make the event so smooth. As usual, the food was great and we especially enjoyed catching up with everyone!
- Bobby: HUGE thanks to Brian Corcoran, Josh LoPresti, Michael Goff, Chris Humphrey, Aaron Andersen, Alex Lippincott, and Dieter Pisot for taking so much of their time to work with Intel on troubleshooting their JMP Live 17 install.

I’m a fan of online shopping, especially this time of year when the stores are so crowded, so I thought this comic was cute! Have a wonderful weekend, all!
