Why Good: Complete EMP Measurement System Analysis Case Study
Author's Comments:
Per your request to send you this content…I’ve attached the content I developed last year as a contribution to the case study section of the Technical Reference Library. It’s a ‘true’ story of a project I led at Kodak before departing…but the names and data have been changed to protect all involved parties.
The core case technique is EMP and to a lesser more subtle degree DOE, in the use case of setting up an experiment to collect data to support the EMP analysis and process improvement activity. The business issue was a manufacturing company was about to embark on significant manufacturing process changes because they were ‘convinced’ that variation in process output quality was due to raw material variability. The case proves/illustrates, that in fact, the largest single source of variability was in the test labs measurement systems…not raw material supplier variation. The project saved boatloads of wasted effort ‘improving’ the wrong root cause of variation.
From a content structure point of view I tried as best I could to follow the Technical Reference Library structure of PowerPoint presentation, companion MS Word document, JMP journal, and relevant JMP data tables. I also included extensive presenter notes in the PowerPoint presentation that Byron Wingerd and Olivia Lippincott helped me develop.
