Discovery Summit is a true celebration. Of statistics. Of scientists, engineers and researchers. Of data exploration and innovation.
This video says it all
(By the way, if you love this video as much as we do, send a little love to the masterminds behind it: Jeff Hudgins, Todd Johnson and Ed Harriss from the SAS video group.)
Discovery maintains its friendly, smart feel
“JMP’s passion and excitement for its products and community still came through,” said Jennifer Eigo, University of Connecticut. The steering committee member added that the conference was “very welcoming, even virtually. JMP is to be commended, it’s a tough thing to do.”

Well-received plenary sessions
Alyson Wilson, Associate Vice Chancellor for National Security and Special Research Initiatives at NCSU, delivered the final keynote. She described the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and the importance of diverse practitioners, diverse methods and diverse perspectives.
Alyson shared: “Given all the different problems I’ve gotten to work on, I think my career is a good illustration of the quote from statistician John Tukey, ‘The best thing about being a statistician is that you get to play in everyone’s backyard.’
“Statisticians, I find, often describe themselves in that cross-cut between methodology and application area.” (In Alyson’s case, the reliability of complex engineered defense systems like armored vehicles, missile defense, nuclear weapons).
And through a broader lens, “The problems that I’m really interested in are how you answer questions and understand uncertainty when you’re combining diverse sources of data.” (For example, atomic scale materials characterization, counterterrorism, Twitter geolocation, faculty retention, nonproliferation.)

As always, our paper presenters shared interesting JMP applications and ‘aha’ moments. We learned about:
- Evaluating a meditation program at P&G
- Hacking an aquarium
- Reducing denim fit variation
- Modeling patient/donor variability for gene/cell therapy
- Predicting the fate of reef corals
Poster presentations led to vibrant conversations about COVID-19 vaccine tweets, time series data of flight delays, predicting release strategies for Netflix – and more.
These resources live on in the Community. Don’t let them go dormant. Share them with your customers and networks!
We had plenty of fun too

Steering committee member Gwen Hallberg of Alkermes said that her co-workers enjoyed the socials and JMP Cares Activities. “Thank you for yoga and bike rides. The yoga video is being released across my company.”
Also highlights? The Quiz Bowl with Andrea Coombs (@andreacoombs1) and Nick Shelton (@nick_shelton) and the DOE passion projects session with Anne Milley, Ryan Lekivetz (@Ryan_Lekivetz) and Gail Massari (@gail_massari).
A special thank you to the core planning team
We’ve learned how to do virtual conferences very well – but it still requires a tremendous amount of forethought, attention to detail, technology savvy, creativity and leadership.

Great job everyone - What a huge team effort to pull it off, again!
Awesome video and recap of Discovery Summit. Thanks @J_Marquardt. And, congratulations on an incredible event everyone! It was such a great week of D/discovery.
