Welcome to the JMP Development Update for October 21, 2022!
Congratulations to all – we have now passed the ship date for our JMP 17.0 feature release! As I’m sure you read in Dan V’s congratulatory email yesterday, customers like Nike, NXP and Micron were among the first in line to request and receive JMP 17.0. For now, customers who want JMP 17 can request it via contracts or sales, and Customer Care plans to email existing customers when My.JMP is ready to go.
As for JMP 17.1, we will freeze features at the end of today and move into bug fixing mode. Our string deadline for 17.1 is next Friday, October 28. Please check your Stringbot reports after this weekend’s runs to make sure you don’t have any 17.1 strings in need of rescue. Many books have been handed off for translation or will soon be handed off, so it is extremely helpful to have finalized string translations in place for translators and DTP specialists who take our localized doc screenshots.
Reminder: JMP’s Confluence and Jira content will be migrated out of the SAS R&D instance this weekend into our own Atlassian cloud-based instances. While the migration of our Atlassian Jira and Confluence content to the cloud will start over the weekend, please be aware that our cloud instance is different than the on-premises data center instance we’ve been sharing with SAS R&D. In addition to the UI differences that Audrey will demo next week, the integrations we have set up between Jira and other tools are being updated to function similarly in our new instances. The JMP Atlassian admin team and devops tooling team members will continue testing and updating necessary processes. Thanks for your patience as we work through this transition.
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for providing this week’s Beta/Crash/Telemetry tracks for the weeks of 10/14/2022 and 10/21/2022. Crashes are selected. Tonya shared that this is the last beta report of the 17 cycle! JMP 17.0 is now shipping and its support been handed off to JMP Technical Support.

JMP Development Updates
DOE
- Brad:
- Presented the Youden Memorial Address at the Fall Technical Conference of the American Society for Quality. Title: Latin Squares, Youden Squares, Balanced Independent Block Designs (BIBDs) and Extensions for Industrial Application. (Congratulations, Brad, on this great honor!)
- Meeting with Dibyen Majumdar (University of Illinois at Chicago) Chris Nachtsheim, and Ryan Lekivetz on a new class of two-level and three-level saturated main effects designs. This family of designs exist for numbers of runs that are multiples of two, which makes them very flexible for minimizing the cost of the design.
- Caleb: Catching up on emails from last week when I attended the Fall Technical Conference. The conference went very well and it was so great to be back in person after 2 years! I got a lot of good feedback and interest on my talk I gave there.
Host
- John Schroedl: Coding changes to host code to store user files in JMP-branded directories and registry branches. This will involve a one-time migration (copy) of files from the old locations to new to preserve continuity across versions. May break “clean up” scripts as directories will change. (JMP-12773, JMP-12774).
HTML5
- Paul Spychala: Got to add partial support for Confidence Intervals for Generalized Regression in HTML (JMPHTML-1792). More work is being done for profilers, but it was also a week of bug fixes (JMPHTML-1719, JMPHTML-1540, JMPHTML-1203), 18.0 feature planning, refactoring planning. Also shout out to Brian and Audrey for all their work the last few weeks!
- Mayowa: Fixed tooltip bugs with parallel plots and box plots (JMPHTML-1771, JMPHTML-1748), fixed bug with legend label positions when operating system language is switched to German (JMPHTML-1542).

Statistics
- Annie: Attended the Fall Technical Conference, reconnecting with several colleagues in the Quality community, and received timely feedback on some control chart features. This week, I’ve integrated a few fixes into 17.1 and started researching Short Run Control Charts for adding in v18.
- Elizabeth: Fixed a few “little, big” bugs in GLMM with two-parameter distributions Fang found when testing Normal and Gamma. Software security training.
- Laura C-S: Integrated numerous bug fixes and smaller new features to 17.1 (thank you to all code reviewers!!). Prepared and recorded a Discovery Japan presentation on survey development.
- Peng: Research work with Bill Meeker. Integrated changes for JMP-13368.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Attended Atlassian admin training; participated in a 17.0 retrospective for the doc team; added an example to the Generalized Regression documentation for 17.1.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Helped revise all the strings appearing in Easy DOE in time for JMP 17.1 maintenance release. Created examples of equations and schematic plots to help explain choices for the model in Easy DOE. Continued work with usability studies for a new table of factor definitions design. Wrote draft of technical tutorial about Easy DOE for presentation on November 10. I answered questions in JMP Community.
- Jacob: Investigating unit test failures and cleaning unit tests. Performance testing, creating new driver files so that ‘failing’ test cases are re-run automatically on Mac to verify the time increase occurred. and investigating a performance issue with Join using compressed columns. Working on prototype for the UI/UX workstream.
- Tonya: Working on security training, bug verification, and service cloud reporting.
Product Management
- Bryan F: Prototyping and/or usability tests for WFB, Easy DOE, JMP Live, and JMP Search. Also, working with Aaron Andersen and Jason Wiggins, on usability test for JMP Projects. Meeting with JMP Live on 18 priorities and 17.1 design decisions. Met with Alex Lippincott about setting up AppStream instance of JMP for testing purposes.
Technical Support
- Wendy: On Wednesday afternoon, there was a security update to the activation server which prevented users from activating the trial and subscription software. Thank you to Daniel Powell for jumping in and fixing it quickly. Half of the Tech Support team took the Rest and Recharge Day on Friday, the 14th. The remainder of the team is taking their day off today. As normal, here are the TS JMP Live reports and the usual plot below. Have a great weekend!

Development Operations
- Jim: Brought two Windows Server 2022 VMs online, one each for 17.1 and 18.0 unit test runs. Met with Drew to discuss the plans for LifeSciences’ Perforce integrations for JMP 18.0. Updated many mac OS UT machines OS and software); planning for the production release of Ventura next week.
Documentation
- Qiana: Completed License to Hire: The Refresher course. Began reviewing resumes for summer Tech Writer intern. Worked on creating WebWork jobs for JMP Live and JMP Public Help builds. Troubleshooting done with WebWorks Support to address missing screenshots and cutoff equations. Held JMP 17.0 retrospective with writers.
- ChrisB: Replaced some clipped equations in the help. Adjusted our 16.2 help files now that 16.2 is “old”. Did a little work on doc: JMPDOC-1520, JMPDOC-1613, JMP-13838. Still trying to add a style to our web template.

I have also been working on a couple of beta tracks that have surfaced a Get Session Script() crash and some longstanding issues with <
- Mandy: Practiced Workflow Builder demo for Mastering JMP – Gail is great to work with! Jasean Rasnake has also been great to work with on JMP 18.0 Workflow builder additions including new if/else branching for JMP 18. Verified some defects at 18.0 for integration back to 17.1. Helped verify Projects with excel file and workflow builder inside it not working correctly – fixed at 17.1 and 18.0.
- Josh L: JMP Live Story Testing, Answered some JMP Live deployment questions. Refactored the JMP Live 18 server reinstallation script. This script does a better job of making sure the JMP product is uninstalled before proceeding. This should keep the server from getting in a state where software wasn’t fully uninstalled, before the reinstall ran. If all goes well, I will make the same changes in 17.1 next week.
- Lisa: Participated in Jira/Confluence training and reviewed text seg customizations. Also investigated an issue with hover labels in an image diff with Mike.
- Audrey: Atlassian admin training, preparation for Cloud migration, updates to sample data, a few verifications for JMP Starter window changes.
