"통계학자가 항상 의사결정을 내리는 자리에 있는 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 함께 일하는 사람들과 프로젝트, 나아가 조직 전체에 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다."“A statistician is not always in a decision-making position. But it can affect the people you work with, the projects you work with, and the entire organization.”
Name: Kevin White
Affiliation: Eastman Applied Statistics Manager
Using JMP: since 1991
Fun Fact: An avid tennis lover, 100 doubles matches each year
What's your favorite feature of JMP?
If I had to pick just one, I would choose DOE Custom Design, taking into account the characteristics of what I've been doing over the years. User designs provide great flexibility when creating and evaluating different types of experimental designs.
The new addition of Process Screening is also a favorite feature. You can quickly evaluate the stability and capability of multiple processes.
What was your first job?
It was a part-time job at Baskin Robbins, a local shopping mall, when I was 15. There, I learned how to scoop ice cream properly, which helped me a lot over the years that followed. When there were no customers, the manager would practice unpacking the quantity. You can't spread it out too much.
If I had known then what I know now, each and every employee would measure the accuracy of each other and JMP It seems to have been an interesting data that can be visualized with . To this day, I still love world-class chocolate ice cream.
What was the proudest moment at work?
It's a difficult question to specify. Throughout my career, I worked as an in-house statistics consultant. Working on hundreds of projects, I've done a variety of jobs, from simple job support to being recognized as a contributor on par with a scientist or engineer.
The proudest and most satisfying part of my career is being able to work with my team on a project where an idea from the lab goes through manufacturing and ultimately the sale of a product that satisfies the customer.
How did you become interested in statistics?
I originally liked math, so I majored in mathematics at first, but later changed to statistics. His father, who was a statistician, was a big influence. The more I knew what my father was doing, the more convinced I was that it was a good job.
My daughter majored in business analytics and is graduating soon, and my son is now in college and plans to major in statistics. I think it's a family history.
What's the best thing about your current job?
It may sound cliche, but it's about helping people gain insights from data. I think the virtues of a statistician are humility and service. Among the definitions of leadership, my favorite is John Maxwell's 'Leadership is influence'.
Statisticians are not always in a position to make decisions. But it can affect the people you work with, the projects, and the entire organization.
How are you using JMP?
Currently, I lead a team of statisticians, providing in-house growth platforms and experimental design and other statistical modeling solutions to support manufacturing productivity and quality improvement activities. From creating and analyzing experimental designs to cleaning and analyzing messy data from manufacturing processes, I use JMP Pro for everything I can think of. JMP Pro 's interactive data visualization and analysis helps you work better and more efficiently.
What was your first project using JMP?
The first one I remember was a solo project I did during my master's degree in statistics at the University of Tennessee. With the introduction of my advisor, I was assigned to a company that makes whipped cream for cakes, and I had to investigate various production sites and process lines to identify differences in key quality characteristics. JMP was chosen because it was easy to create control charts, compare process capabilities, and analyze variable factors.
What advice would you give to novice JMP users?
Beginners are An introductory kit for new users You can familiarize yourself with JMP with Afterwards, if there is a topic you are interested in, you can broadcast/record a webinar. Mastering JMP You can see the series.
JMP Community It's also a good idea to sign up for . It's a great place to chat with other JMP users and discuss topics. newsletter By subscribing, you can keep up to date with new webinars, tips, and more.
Finally, in the area where you live or within the company JMP User Meeting Find out if this exists. There are many resources available, so we recommend you give it a try.
Is there anything you would like to say to the JMP development team or John Sol?
First of all, 30 years ago, I had a vision to create such dynamic software. John Saul Thank you. I can't imagine my career without JMP.
Also, please continue to listen to our users in the future. A few years ago, I was gratefully given the opportunity to join the JMP Customer Advisory Board, and the most impressive part was the JMP developers listening. This includes John Saul, who took the most notes on ideas for a better JMP.
Finally, keep innovating. In recent JMP releases, existing features have been improved and new features have been added. I'm always excited to see what the next version will bring.
What are the prospects for data science/analysis in the next few decades?
It is expected to continue to grow as the amount of available data increases and computational power and analysis methods continue to evolve. We're already seeing exponential growth in data, and it's going to continue. Machine learning algorithms and software will also continue to evolve, making it easier for data scientists to use. With the increase in computing power, it will be possible to process large amounts of data faster than ever before.
Based on my career, I'm rather concerned about the future of an industrial statistician strong in quality control and experimental design. With many college statistics departments focusing on data science or analytics, it's already becoming increasingly difficult to find people who want to become industry statisticians. Data scientist is, of course, an attractive profession, but I think the day will come when we will recognize the need for an industry statistician again at some point.
