Use this guide to better understand what JMP Presentation Virtualization is and when/how to position it to a customer's IT department. Please engage your manager and /or @stankoprowski0 or @dieter_pisot if you have questions.
What is JMP Presentation Virtualization?
JMP Presentation Virtualization is JMP or JMP Pro installed on a server. JMP is then accessed and executed via technologies like Microsoft Terminal Server or remote desktop connections. From the user's perspective, JMP runs on a remote computer (consuming RAM and CPU resources there) but the user interface (Windows output, Mouse+Keyboard input) are transmitted over the network to the user's desktop.

Can the JMP presentation virtualization be installed on more than one server? If so, is there a limit to the number of servers.
There is no limit to the number of servers. However, if the customer anticipates having large numbers of concurrent users, more than one server (and one Presentation Server installation) would be required. If you need multiple servers in multiple countries, you will need a multinational license agreement.
What if my customer wants the ability to install desktop JMP on a server OS, but for individual use, not for sharing of resources?
The PV license is about the OS that JMP is installed on. So if the user needs to install JMP on a Server OS (even if he or she is treating it like a desktop machine and logging into the machine directly), they will need a PV license. It’s about the delivery of the correct license file, which will allow JMP to run on the server OS.
What if my customer wants/has both desktop or virtual deployments?
Yes, that is possible, but please note that GIDB will have them as separate sites for each deployment and will show the operating system as desktop or virtualization. Please note that the virtual deployment is not the same as the desktop. (operating system codes).
When is JMP Presentation Virtualization a good fit for a customer?
Even though there are only small differences (such as logging in and accessing and storing data locally) between desktop JMP vs JMP Presentation Virtualization (JMP on a server), JMP's platforms behave and work exactly the same. To the user, there is no difference once in JMP. JMP Presentation Virtualization can be positioned when a customer says they require to have JMP on a server rather than on a desktop. Some example scenarios:
- The company is migrating their data to the cloud as a part of modernizing their infrastructure. It can be expensive to pull data in and out of a hosted cloud (such as Amazon Web Services). If a customer installs JMP Presentation Virtualization on AWS, they have moved the computing next to the data, and it can save “moving” the data around as well as be computationally more efficient.
- The customer is migrating their data and has their own private data storage centers as well – so no cost - but the time lag for hauling data back and for across the country or around the world is burdensome for individual users.
- The customer wants the highest level of security around their data. End users can only remote desktop to the virtual machines where JMP and the data sources are hosted, and are locked out of saving anything back to their own desktop – so the data can never leave the secure area where it is being stored and analyzed.
What can I ask to know if JMP Presentation Virtualization is the right choice?
Here are some questions to understand why a customer might want JMP Presentation Virtualization:
- What is your corporate policy on deploying desktop applications?
- What server hardware/software will be used?
- If virtual server, what virtualization technology will be used? Example: VDI with VMWare, Citrix, etc.
- What server OS will be used?
- What desktop OS will be used?
- How will users access the server? Remote desktop, for example.
- What is the total number of named users that will have access?
- Where are the users located? Please indicate if any outside the US and their location.
- How will you administer/control access to the JMP software? Active Directory, for example
- Where will the data be stored? (Note performance is best the closer you have the data to the software.)
- What are your data sources?
- Where is your data currently stored?
- How big is your data? What is size of typical starting data set? (JMP is memory intensive)
- Do you require DEV, TEST & PROD environment?
What are the benefits of JMP Presentation Virtualization?
- For Users:
- JMP now has access to a much faster CPU and more RAM, and can access JMP from a wider variety of devices.
- For Administrators:
- Reduced administration and management costs associated with upgrading JMP releases and applying hot fixes through the use of a smaller number of JMP instances in a centrally managed environment
- Reduced management cost and overhead leveraging centrally managed roles and security
- Accelerated deployment and upgrading of JMP through a centralized deployment, enabling rapid rollout of new functionality to the JMP user community with minimal overhead.
- Infrastructure at scale which allows organizations to develop/adapt their systems as their technical needs change.
How should I describe JMP Presentation Virtualization?
Example: Presentation Virtualization Architecture— the Presentation Virtualization Architecture would consist of a single Citrix server farm running a version of the Windows server operating system. The Citrix server farm would be located in the Americas. The JMP software shall be installed as a single published application running under a Windows desktop operating system in each server environment available to a maximum of five authorized users as identified through the appropriate Active Directory group using roaming profiles. The JMP software application will be installed and configured to be accessed via the Remote Desktop Services protocol. Users will be located in the following territory: United States.
How are different JMP products made available through JMP Presentation Virtualization?
All JMP desktop products (JMP, JMP Pro, JMP Clinical, JMP Genomics), can be made available through remote desktop or virtualization. For virtualization it is accessed via VMWare Horizon client or Citrix Receiver and is for Windows or Mac clients only (no browser, iOS, or Android).
How is JMP Presentation Virtualization licensed?
For licensing information, please refer to the Requirements section on the pricing page.
When is JMP Live a good fit for a customer?
Even though both of these (JMP Presentation Virtualization and JMP Live) can live in the cloud, they address two very different challenges. JMP Presentation Virtualization allows organizations to centralize the management of JMP. JMP Live provides an infrastructure for sharing and collaboration. So depending on what challenges the customer is trying to address will determine which solution you should position.
Do we have any sort of documentation/installation guides for JMP Presentation Virtualization?
We do not provide any installation guides for creating a JMP Presentation Virtualization environment. However, once the customer has the environment built, they can use the
deployment guide for JMP. If you need clarification on the process, please reach out to
@stankoprowski0.
Can we run JMP Presentation Virtualization in containers?
At this point JMP Presentation Virtualization cannot be containerized. It needs an infrastructure where it can run directly on a virtual machine or bare-metal servers.
What if I want to try running a Presentation Virtualization environment out for myself?
Check out this great post by Stan Koprowski who talks through the steps to set up your own Presentation Virtualization so you can see what the experience is like when running JMP or JMP Pro when a customer licenses JMP Presentation Virtualization.

Hi -- I wanted to jump in and ask about a containerized version of JMP for the cloud. Our team lost a 1500-user opportunity with the Air Force a few years ago because JMP isn't containerized. We had a conversation at a conference with the same group -- they still love JMP, and would be open to talking with us again if JMP is containerized, to get it into their toolkit.
At the same conference, the Army folks we talked with talked about containerized cloud native applications. Their cloud infrastructure is already "stood up" and they are building it out further.
Is this a containerized version of JMP on the product roadmap?

Thanks for this. Answering questions about this from customers is almost always very painful. This really helps!
Thanks @mzwald . Just a quick heads-up for the sales people. We need to be careful with advertising the possibility to access JMP from a wider variety of devices. Our standard paperwork for PV has a passage in it that indicates, that the Citrix Receiver or the VMWare Horizon Client must either be a Windows operating system client or a MAC operating system client, not a tablet, cell phone or other portable device.
Some feedback on JMP Presentation Server:
1. We need to be able to track users using Windows Server credentials, otherwise anyone who logs into the server will be able to use JMP and it would be impossible for us to track compliance.
2. There are two tiers of benefits: benefits to administrators and benefits to users. The benefits to admins is clearly listed, but the benefits to users are not. The primary user benefits being that JMP now has access to a much faster CPU and more RAM, and can access JMP from a wider variety of devices.
3. How will JMP Presentation Server handle installations on multiple servers? If the customer anticipates have large numbers of concurrent users, more than one server (and one Presentation Server installation) would be required.
4. It is likely that JMP Presentation Server will rapidly increase in the near future given the migration of corporations moving towards virtualization.
