Welcome to the JMP Development Update for September 30, 2022!
Thanks very much to JMP DevOps teams and the life sciences team for helping wrap up 17.0 with the creation of our final installer candidates for JMP Clinical this week! I appreciate all the ongoing work on 17.1 and 18.0 issues. Over 200 Jira issues have already been marked resolved in the track and many more are open for 17.1 consideration, pending testing results in 18.0.
We will freeze code for JMP 17.1 on Friday, December 16. I know this seems like a long way off, but it really will be here before we know it! A reminder that any important features you may be working on for 17.1 should be listed on the JMP 17.1 features page in Confluence and need to be closed out as complete by our JMP 17.1 feature freeze deadline on October 21. That date is also our string deadline for 17.1, so please address any new strings you may be working on as soon as you can.
Thanks to Brian Corcoran and Audrey Shull for coordinating our move to Atlassian’s cloud environment for Jira and Confluence! Beginning next week, we’ll undergo a two-week process to test migrating JMP’s Atlassian content. If all goes well, we will consider migrating our systems starting the weekend of October 22.
You all should have received Audrey’s note about moving your Confluence content to JMP Personal Spaces if you have content you would like to retain. We’ll continue to share this link here in the weekly update until the migration is underway. If you’d like assistance, don’t hesitate to contact Audrey; she is happy to help.
Thanks very much to Michael Goff and Justin Chilton for sharing a demo at the JMP dev meeting on Thursday morning! They created a prototype of a functioning Distribution tool integrated into a test instance of JMP Live. This project (known as Project Ruby) is a proof of concept protype created at the request of product management and I’m sure it will generate plenty of discussion about possible future directions (as all good prototypes do). If you missed the meeting, you can find a downloaded copy of the recording in my public folder here: \\d73817\public\Dev Meetings\
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s details about beta/crash/telemetry tracks with crashes selected.

JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Dan S: More work on selection tool behavior in projects. Fixed crash related to data filter and row-state column formulas. Investigating changes to Platform launchers. Fixes for session files used by Projects.
- Dave B: Worked with Ryan and Rajneesh to speed up FDE when it was creating a lot of LineSegs, fixed a couple of MFI bugs, and fixed an annotation problem with the copy message and markup.
DOE
- Peng: Continued polishing response and factor list prototypes to fulfill additional desired behaviors. Also continued working with Bill on the draft of one of his recent research papers.
Host
- Paul N: Continued work on Map server. Creating 3rd-Party software approval requests for the JMP 16, JMP 17’s use of the operating system libraries for encryption. In doing the Platform and export classifications, Legal decided they needed us to go through the JIRA process for requesting the use of the 2 libraries. Microsoft’s Cryptography API: Next Generation (CNG), and Apple’s Common Crypto library. Decommissioning old mac laptop and trashcan macPro, in exchange for new M1 MacBook Pro laptop, setting up development environment on new machine.
- John Schroedl: Project changes to allow Jim to set more build flags via command line instead of manually changing jmpconfig.h. Renamed IS_JMPPRODEMO to IS_JMPPROTRIAL for similarity to IS_JMPTRIAL. More telemetry work such as re-prompting for opt-in in each new EA build. Crash investigations with precautionary host changes in some norep cases.
HTML5
- John Powell: Worked with Mayowa, Nick, Jim, and Bryan F. to get our build machines identified and updated. Triaged my JMP Live Jira items. Started discussing Interactive HTML planning for JMP 18 with Dieter and Mia. Tagged JMPHTML Feature Requests to have them considered by PM for prioritizing for JMP 18. Moved my Personal Confluence space to a temporary home. Thanks, Audrey! Created a JMP Live Feature Request to make Open In JMP be more “What You See Is What You Get” (WEBJMP-6089) Thanks, Anna! Reviewed a resume for our C++ developer position and discussed opening the position to Eastern Time Zone remote candidates with Christine. Investigated issues with Open Street Map backgrounds (JMPHTML-889).
- Paul Spychala: Changed the way we draw TextSegments to better support textBaseLine and textAlign separately from percentage positioning (JMPHTML-1711). Profiler axis in HTML no longer forces ranged style and exports and renders them properly (JMP-1817), with this and last week changes, HTML profiler axis should really match JMP properly. More smaller bug fixes, finding bugs, triaging new feature requests for 18.0, and also researching for 18.0.
- Mayowa: Fixed bug with box plots in html not matching JMP when multiple box plot elements are listed in JSL (JMPHTML-657), working on fixing bug with mosaic graphs within journals not displaying when they are saved as Interactive HTML (JMPHTML-1311).
JMP Live
- Aurora: Committed a few small bug fixes for 17.1. Lots of investigation and thinking this week, most of which failed to reach a satisfying conclusion. Would it be easy to keep data in sync between JMP and JMP Live? No. Which Git UI tool should we use? Still investigating. Which REST API routes are obsolete? Still investigating. Can we reliably band-aid a V8 / Jest memory leak affecting our automated tests? So far, no. Why is publishing slow from some Macs to some JMP Live servers? Chris and Michael figured it out. Why are the databases on some internal JMP Live servers so dang big? Because a lot of dang big data has been published to them. Can the JMP Live server help out with publishing a very long data table filename? No. Here's hoping for better luck next week!
- Michael G: Presented Project Ruby at dev demo. Worked on 17.1 bug fixing. Working with Bryan F on Usability Ideation.
Statistics
- Jianfeng: Completed the new feature of adding Post-Hoc Conover and Nemenyi comparisons for Friedman test JMP-7981 which was requested by several users. David has verified the feature. Any feedback on this feature is welcome. Thanks!

- Elizabeth: Was on Statistically Speaking with Walt Stroup discussing GLMMs that appeared to be well attended and well received. Now answering some audience questions that we didn’t have time for live for a blog post to accompany the On Demand version of it. Pushing the Normal and Gamma distributions to GLMM.
- Laura C-S: Added Freq and Weight to the SEM platform’s launch dialog (JMP-14295), which also made it easy to turn on the bootstrap option for individual tables in the report. Now I’m working on allowing users to modify the Model Name (JMP-14254) of a fitted model from the Model Comparison Table. I also attended a few of the SAS Explore presentations.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Updates in Text Explorer and Distribution documentation, including adding an example of Detection Limits in Distribution.
Stat Testing
- Mark B: Completed pre-work for Strengths Workshop next week. Preparing for interview to go with Tutorial in November. Designing new features of Easy DOE for JMP 18 with Brad, Joseph, and Ryan. Testing Easy DOE with Jacob. Analyzing usability tests from JMP Lab at 2022 JMP Discovery Summit with Bryan, Ryan, and Jacob. Answering questions in JMP Community.
- Jacob: Improving the performance testing analysis scripts, and writing new scripts to re-run the ‘failing’ tests in the nightly runs to verify the time increased compared to baseline version. Processing results from the usability studies at the in-person Discovery Summit.
- Fang: Verified and added more unit tests for the Switch column feature in the Response Screening, Nominal Logistic, Ordinal Logistic, and Mixed Model personalities in JMP 18. Investigated unit test failures on an M1 Mac with Ventura. Responding to EA feedback and TS track. Big verification.
- Tonya: Testing NF - Limits Label Precision in CCB. Bug verification. Working on Service Cloud reporting.
Life Sciences Updates
- All: Finalized JMP Clinical 17 fixes and testing installer candidates.
Product Management
- Bryan F: Working out the details of how JMP handles requests about how we handle accessibility issues. Ideation sessions for addressing usability test pain points with JMP Live, WFB, and JMP Search. Pain point processing with Easy DOE team. Processing feedback from JMP Live on the lab logistics, pain point identification/prioritization, and ideation sessions. For the effort to create images of JMP for the JMP.com, I created "perceptually uniform" bad to good gradient based on JMP brand colors and created several qualitative color maps that are more "optimally distinct" and compatible.
Technical Support
- Duane: We are making progress on several current projects. We are beginning UAT testing for My JMP, and we have several blogs in the works for the Community. Kai was able to participate in the DACH Users Group Meeting in Heidelberg earlier this week. He shares that it was a great event and he was able to meet several customers in person for the first time. As normal, here are the TS JMP Live reports and the usual plot below. Have a great weekend!

Development Operations
- Bob: Secured all 17.0 download files for external web (Subscription, Student, Trial, Pro Trial). Thanks to John Schroedl and Jim Borek for finalizing programs to lay down jar files needed for SAS On Demand for JMP 17. I have pushed those files externally. Final SOE changes for 17.0 orders that will take place via the SAS license processing. Finalized NIST Validation and Installer Validation downloads and pushed externally. - Chris B: Worked on JMPDOC-1609: Dispatch and Accept row states for Virtual joins. Worked on getting the index/noindex directives right for all the JMPLive files (past and present).
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: Testing and verifying pushes to 18.0 for data filters, transforms, and workflows and added some tests to my JSL testing suite. Tracked down a broken Workflow with files on Mac that Aaron had pushed at 18, which he fixed. Worked with Drew on a crash he had on Mac with Virtual join and colors, but could not replicate it – Michael Hecht looked at the crash file and said it didn’t have JMP tracing in it, so it was more of an OS issue. This did uncover a VJ issues with column properties that I opened for Dave White to look at and see if there was anything to do to fix that. This week – working on Workflow builder at 17.0 so I can add examples and a few more advanced things to my demo for a bigger tutorial on Oct. 20th.
- Josh: JMP Live 18 Install testing the new path C:\Program Files\JMP\JMP Live. Working with Chris and Alex on the JMP Live 18 Keycloak installation issues. Testing changes to publishing based on feedback from the useability lab. Monitoring the JMP Live Pool performance on the dev servers.
