Welcome to the JMP Development Update for September 23, 2022!
The JMP Life Sciences development team is wrapping up the final stages of approval mode for their initial JMP-only JMP Clinical product release. Final installer candidates for JMP Clinical 17 are planned to be created in a few days. It has been a major undertaking to rewrite, test and document the new product architecture and features. The team has worked very hard and had a lot of support from JMP development along the way. Congratulations to everyone involved in this major effort! The team plans to turn soon to development efforts for their 17.1 release.
Thanks to all who participated in the virtual JMP Discovery sessions this week! It was great to see so many of you in person last week or over Zoom this week. If you missed a talk at Discovery, you can find many details including posters and recorded talks in the Discovery 2022 section of the JMP User Community. Please contribute to the page in Confluence tracking suggestions from Discovery here: Discovery 2022 page in Confluence and add Jira issue links if you already have them entered.
John Schroedl asked me to remind all Visual Studio users to please install the latest update! Our Windows, nightly, CI and jmprunner build processes have all been updated to use this version and so you should too!
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing this week’s details about Beta/Crash/telemetry tracks with crashes selected. You can see this report in JMP Live here: Beta/Crash/telemetry files for the week of 9/23/2022 | JMP Live (sas.com)

JMP Development Updates
Technical Support
- Duane: I think it was a busy week for everyone. Discovery online went well for us, and I was very impressed with all of the Plenaries, papers, and posters. Congrats to all involved in making the conference a success! Here are the TS JMP Live reports and the usual plot below. Have a great, relaxing weekend!

Product Management
Development Operations
- Jim: Integrated numerous Clinical changes from Main to 17.0; built mac installers. Reported numerous ASAN and assertion failures from latest JMP 18.0 UT run. Perforce support.
- Myron: Working on downloading telemetry for JMP-12704 so that the results can be stored and retrieved from a MySQL database on jmptool. Jenkins, server, and other random fixes.
- Shannon: Attended Discovery sessions. Investigated mystery crashes with help from many people – thanks especially to Dave B, Dave W, John Schroedl, Dan S, John Sall as well as Lisa Grossman for making many helpful updates to our crash data process!
Documentation
- Susan C: Testing the HTML5 and JMP Live/Public help and working on fixes for help issues. I also created PDFs for Roger for the English books to include on jmp.com.
- Qiana: Pushed initial version of JMP Live 17 Help to production. Some minor updates are expected to add details of My.JMP download process for JMP Live.
System/Host Testing-Cary
- Mandy: Participated in Discovery Meet the Experts. Met with a customer from Exxon privately and went over Virtual Join and gave my Workflow talk. Investigated an internal crash we’ve seen since about 8/31, and with Evan and John S. and Dave B. we finally figured it out at 18.0 – it was a clipboard push on windows that would only crash if you were on the machine, not remotely logged in, very interesting! Back to verifying defects and doing some more advanced Workflow builder stuff to prepare for my Tutorial in October.
- Hunter: Tested the updated SAS Download Manager 2.94 on all modern Mac versions, JIRA verifications, updated to Ventura 13 Beta 8 to check the status on a known report refresh problem, and worked with John Schroedl trying to reproduce a crash on several Windows VMs.
- Nick H: Worked on verifications and continuing some cleanup/additions to my unit tests after the 17.1 and 18.0 branching. Filed a few new Jiras related to Get Preferences(), trying to make the return of default preferences more complete within certain preference categories. Added Generalized Linear Mixed Model to the Pro Platforms tab in the JMP Pro category of JMP Starter. Fixed a small typo in the Scripting Index for the description of Set JSON Settings(). I have also started working on a small side project in which I hope to use JMP to both import (using HTTP request) and analyze years worth of fantasy football data.
- Lisa: Worked on submitting image tests during verifications, updated version matching in crash data script, reviewed a beta track regarding moving annotations in PowerPoint, and attended a few Discovery presentations.
- Mike M: Got Sikuli tests running for 17.1 and 18.0. Opened a couple new Jiras and verified some defects. Adding a Sikuli test for encrypted applications.
- Josh: JMP Live story testing, server maintained. Answered some JMP Live installation questions and did a customer recreate. Worked on some publishing JSL. Created some check lists in confluence for 17.1 and 18.0.
Data Discovery
- Dan S: Fix for JSL row-state handler looping, fix crash in drag-and-drop in project. Worked with John Schroedl to fix clicking in tree control in property panel. Changing selection cursor behavior in projects to respect per-window rules on selection. Working on initial updates to support a Data Filter preference. Lots of feedback from customers at Discovery.
- Dave B: Investigated a couple of different crashes, fixed a drag/drop problem with journals inside projects, fixed MFI file name regression, fixed potential crash when exporting tables with custom formats.
- Ernest: Discovery support, usability study followup, Columns Viewer prototyping
- Xan: Pareto bug work and Discovery Summit.
DOE
- Peng: Like most developers, I spent most of the time this week in Discovery Meet the Experts. I didn’t have many visitors as usual, but every day I had one or two visitors stay for a rather long chat. And I felt good that they left with the information that they need. Also continued working with Bill Meeker on research.
- Caleb: This week was yet more Discovery! Once again, we had good discussions with users and got great feedback on Easy DOE and Design Explorer.
- Brad: Working with JP Morgan of Virginia Tech on designs for model discrimination.
Host
- John Schroedl: Helped diagnose and fix issue causing JMP nightly test to exit unexpectedly with no crash report. Particularly diabolical as it does not happen over remote desktop. Sadly, I also caused the initial failure. Added retry logic to clipboard operations since there is only one OS clipboard; other apps can interfere while we attempt to add our content. Working with Mike (Nan Wu) on telemetry test prep including documents and scripts. He has already found an issue with the 17.1 Pro Trial! More crash investigations.
- Michael H: Fixed Automatic Reference Counting issue with JMP Project Windows. Cleaned up TK code to separate out the host-dependent parts. Helped track down and fix an issue with the “uglifyjs” build phase for HTML support. Worked on Mac Toolbar defects. Started investigating Xcode 14 and c++20.
HTML5
JMP Live
- Michael G: Updated 3rd party packages Jest and Faker JS. Discovery online meet the experts. Worked with Bryan F to review user study data and come up with a plan going forward. More 17.1 bug fixing.
Statistics
- Annie: This week was more Discovery conference, both attending Meet the Experts and a presentation together with Laura Lancaster. Received lots of great feedback and suggestions. Also, started working on more bug fixes.
- Laura C-S: Participated in online Discovery activities and got some feedback for the SEM platform, which I’m in the process of researching. Submitted abstract for Europe Discovery.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Added a formula to the Distribution documentation; listened to a handful of Discovery talks.
Stat Testing
- Tonya: Documentation review, answered a TS question about control charts, attended Discovery Summit presentations, and bug verification.
Note from Shannon
Now that fall is really in the air, it’s time for seasonal treats! Thanks to Bryan Boone for sharing this one! If you can’t bake, don’t worry – this one has three simple ingredients – chocolate chips, Halloween peeps, and graham crackers, no crumbling even required. Hope you all have a great weekend!
