Discovery Summit Americas wrapped up after two consecutive weeks of learning and connecting.
“Attendee engagement felt like an all-time high,” said Jeff Perkinson. “Part of that was because JMP 17 is so rich and part of it was because our users just missed spending time with us.”
Watch the recap
The second week’s sessions complimented the in-person special segment, rather than replicating it. Each event was optimized to make the most of the venue.
“Our virtual Discovery Summits are no less important than our in-person Special Segments – they're just different,” said Diana Levey. “They have much more reach, bringing our message to data enthusiasts who can’t travel to attend an in-person event.”
Some 1,200 people registered for the online event, representing companies big and small and organizations near and far from SAS campus. One attendee from Europe said he likes the timing of the Americas event – evening for him – because he’s able to log on and focus without interruption from colleagues.
While the in-person Special Segment hosted only about 100 guests, they tended to be very enthusiastic and vocal guests. Data explorers from SK Hynix’s R&D Data Science group were among the satisfied users who attended in-person segment. Having traveled all the way from Korea, one of them said, “It was a very meaningful time for me to understand not only the technical aspects of JMP, but also your positive energy and direction to make it.”
ChulHee Min, who escorted the SK Hynix customers, said, “They and I were deeply delighted with your support and felt the soul behind the event.”
Many JMP and SAS employees were indeed behind the two events, investing time, expertise, and great enthusiasm into the back-to-back weeks.
So much great content

As steering committee member Trish Roth of Abbott Laboratories stated the day after their talk, “Workflow Builder: a game changer.”
If the online keynote on workflow was the feature film, subsequent plenary sessions were the “shorts” – quick demonstrations of important JMP 17 features. Experts from R&D gave lightning talks. They included:
- Design Explorer; Ryan Lekivetz, Advanced Analytics R&D Manager
- Search JMP; Evan McCorkle, Principal Software Developer
- Spectral Analysis; Chris Gotwalt, Advanced Analytics R&D Senior Director
- SEM Improvements; Laura Castro-Schilo, Senior Research Statistician Developer
- Graph Builder Improvements; Xan Gregg, Research and Development Director
- JMP Clinical 17; Sam Gardner, Senior Product Manager
Each plenary speaker was available at a Meet the Experts session following their presentation, along with fellow R&D staff and product experts. Of course, this is a favorite aspect of any Discovery whether in person or virtual.

Virtual fun too
Like the in-person Special Segment the week prior, the online event set time aside for networking as well as learning. Each online day ended with Bright Minds Mingle sessions, where attendees discussed championing analytic change in their organizations, mentorship programs, users groups, and even differences between genders working in science and engineering fields.
What’s next?
Stay tuned for more on the virtual Discovery Summit China, coming up very soon. Korea and Japan will be here – virtually – this fall. And spring 2023 will bring an in-person Special Segment and an online event for Europe. We try to keep discoverysummit.jmp up to date with the latest and greatest Discovery news.
