FILTER -> Once we save it, how can we reapply it to other scripts?—esp. local data filter. for example, when I create a breakout with my categorical data, I then build a filter to look at the impacts. I would then like to reapply the filter settings to other selected scripts/saved breakout tables.
I think Michael laid out a good solution for this by saving a universal data filter and a few favorites that can be revisted.
So the idea is that someone has gone to the trouble of finding a useful filter on the data. They may be in a Local Data Filter somewhere, or they might even be in the Global Data Filter. Each of these data filters has a "Favorites" panel to which we can save a useful filter out, but if I then save the platform or Global Data Filter script to the data table, the favorites are local to that particular script. If the user has already created other Data Filters (whether they be Local or Global) and saved them to the data, these Data Filter scripts are not aware of the new favorites that have just been stored.
What we need, then, is a mechanism to access interesting Data Filter favorites from the data table. This could be something similar to the Constraint property that can be saved to the data table, one could have a Data Filter Favorites property that any data filter (Local or Global) could read from. It could be as simple as adding to the Favorites button: "Add these favorites to data table", "Manage data table favorites" (to allow users to delete favorites in the Data Filter Favorites property), "Load favorites from data table". Or as an alternative, there could be a check box in any Data Filter: use favorites stored in data table which if unchecked allows users to store separate favorites in each script, but if checked forces the user to manage their favorites at the data table level.
This is also an opportunity to make it easier to edit both the Constraint property and this proposed Data Filter Favorites property; instead of the play button trying to execute a list (which is all the Constraint property really is), the play button ought to recognize that it is the Constraint property and bring up a constraint editor; similar for the Data Filter Favorites, the play button should bring up a favorites editor.
Certainly these features would take a little bit of time to implement but I think it could be quite intuitive.
Maybe there are better ways to implement this idea, but now that I have a vision of what this could look like I'm more excited about this idea!
Seems to me this is what the classic Data Filter (Rows menubar) was designed for. Can you speak more about what you're going for here?
