Overview:
Businesses are increasingly transitioning to digital technologies, such as smart factories in the implementation of Industry 4.0 solutions. Getting the data from the operational technology may involve use of (read-only REST) API. APIs scale well and allow regular transfers of data with which to make use of JMP’s visualization and analytic tools, e.g. for process optimization.
Purpose:
To provide working examples with specific instructions of a REST API request to a public domain for which data updates daily, including script for automating the publication for data update to JMP Live in v16. Can also serve as a template for introducing those new to JSL to related features. A complete journal with supporting content is also provided.
Contents:
- When You Want To: Demo a Simple API Request
- When You Want To: Demo a Workflow Using an API Request to Create or Update a Data Table
- When You Want To: Demo a Workflow Using an API Request to Update JMP Live Report
- When You Want To: Demo It All Together in a Journal
- When You Want To: Make It Your Own
Description:
The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis houses 816,000 US and international time series in their FRED economic database, which serves as the source of the API request in this example.

Three different paradigms are provided in increasing order of complexity:
- a simple REST API data request to demonstrate the capability for a single data series;
- a data processing workflow to demonstrate automation through several series; and
- publishing newly updated data to JMP Live.
Final Thoughts:
The data are not "Industry 4.0" related, but public sources of such which update regularly (e.g. daily, weekly) were not readily apparent. If you have thoughts or suggests on related data toward that end, please feel free to share. Any errors, omissions, questions - please share as well. Big thank you to @O_Lippincott for reviewing the content and providing feedback to improve the project.
