With nominal values on the x axis and X group activated, the axes of the sub-plots share a common list of values.
All plots show all values.
In the example below, X group says that girls are in the left plot and boys are in the right plot.
But due to axis sharing between both subplots, boys and girls show up on the axes of both plots.
This is counter-intuitive and consumes unnecessary space.
With some steps the underlying data table can be changed to generate a plot with girls just on the left and boys on the right:
https://community.jmp.com/t5/Discussions/X-group-gt-adjust-axis/m-p/542262
Would be great to have a right click option to directly "disentangle" the axis settings such that each axis gets (just) its own values.
similar topics:
- same effect for y axis values and Y group
- different axis scaling for continuous values in different sub-plots.
example: Plot with male and female students.
Unfortunately, the plot on the left (F!) lists also all the male students - and the plot on the right (M!) all the female students !??!

Mass CustomizationSharing and Communicating ResultsRe: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupI also have the same problem! The only solution is to restructure the data, which is very elaborate.
Re: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupNB: same issue for nested level on Group X or Group Y.
Here you see a plot with Group Y labels moved to the left:
- a lot of white space
- on the other hand one cannot even read all the labels.

here, the same plot with hierarchical labels on the Y Axis (instead of Group X) --> only the labels which the user needs

Re: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective group+1
Note: I commonly have implemented SamGardener's workaround, but I agree this should be a feature, no workaround needed.
Re: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupI would also love to have that option.
Re: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective group - Status changed to: InvestigatingRe: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupOne option that gets you close to what you want is to use factor nesting on the X-axis instead of grouping, but you do lose some of the visual separatin cues that come with using grouping.

Re: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective group - Status changed to: Acknowledged@hogi - Thank you for your suggestion! We have captured your request and will take it under consideration.
Re: :manos_unidas_para_la_oración: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupAs a long-time Minitab user (who is more and more using jmp because of its many advantages :-)), I can only say that this is one of the mostly used options in our Minitab community for all kind of grouped plots. Really helpful (and just 1 click in Minitab, see snippet below).
So, I think this would be an improvement for jmp.

Re: :manos_unidas_para_la_oración: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupWith so much support for the wish and almost 2 years since submission - I hope there is no force pulling in the opposite direction to prevent the new feature?
@Sarah-Sylvestre , could you please give an update on the current status?
Re: :manos_unidas_para_la_oración: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupI really hope it will be available in v19 ...
Re: :manos_unidas_para_la_oración: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective group@hogi I agree, this is much needed! Any update would be appreciated @Sarah-Sylvestre !!
It would help out the new page "row" option as well as you can split out the different levels to be on their own Y axis but unless you are using a continuous Y axis you still have the same gaps in the X axis.
Here the Page is arrange by two rows and the x axis is the lot number. Each panel is by the part number. Each panel should only respect the lots associated with it.

I have to switch to a continuous X axis to make it useful

Re: :manos_unidas_para_la_oración: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupWhy does Graph builder ignore the link axis setting for categorical values ?!?!

Re: :manos_unidas_para_la_oración: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupas an interim solution till the new functionality is available ....
there is a workaround which I just learned from JMP support [TS-00156288]:
thanks @ Sarah
- use nested values on the x axis
- use page for the main groups
- use the new page layout
- link Y axes
- don't replicate the linked axes
- for each subplot: adjust the x range MANUALLY (!!!) to show the subset
... and then remove the nested axis labels to hide your tracks.
- cross your fingers that all data points are in the view and that NOBODY updates the data table without adjusting the x axis ranges in every subplot

Re: :manos_unidas_para_la_oración: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective groupWe tried the workaround several times. VERY (!!) fragile, extremely dangerous!

Re: :folded_hands: X group: restrict the values on the axis to the respective group@Jeff_Perkinson just mentioned this wish on Discovery Summit 2026 and explained that the desired improvements collide with other features in JMP.
Can we think of a light version of this wish?
Let's take big class - with 18 female and 22 male students.
With the original idea of the wish, the plot will be asymmetric - with the plot region for the male students slightly larger than for the female students.
But how about a light version - a plot with same size for male and female students?
With 22 slots available - and just 18 female slots filled?
Going further along this line, we would need something like col score() on the X axis, but not with number as tick labels.
We have to replace them with the names of actual students - separate labels for females and males!
The closest I can get is this:

To pass the finish line, I guess we need some support from @XanGregg and his team ...
