Make multivariate control charts interactive, e.g.:

 

• Click on out of control point
• Contribution plot is displayed
• Select variable or group of variable with biggest contributions
• Get control charts of original variables via mouse click to see which variable is really causing the trouble

If the variables are correlated, it may not be clear which single variable is really causing the trouble. Two or three variables could generate a control chart signal at the same time, but perhaps one of those variables being out of control is what is causing the others to be out of control.

Much depends on the covariance structure of the variables being modeled.
