Welcome to the JMP Development Update for September 2, 2022!
As we head into the long weekend, I hope you’re reading this upon your return Tuesday! Here are a few reminders as we move into the second week of September:
- Please triage items on your Jira list that still have Fix Version/s = 17.0:OPEN assigned. Please retry test cases and mark the item fixed if it seems resolved and needs verification. Otherwise, please move issues ahead to 18.0:OPEN and/or 17.1:OPEN as appropriate, if they still impact those releases.
- Any source code issues in the JMP project that still have 17.0:OPEN in the Fix Version/s field by September 10 will be updated to 18.0:OPEN. If you already have reviewed your open items and marked items fixed if they were resolved in 17.0 and are ready to move the remainder of your items forward sooner, please let me know. If you can, please prioritize retrying crash cases, since it’s important to have an accurate release range when evaluating customer crashes against known issues.
- Please add any 17.1 features you’re planning to work on to the JMP 17.1 Features page in Confluence. This is very helpful to downstream teams as they plan their work for our first maintenance release.
Thanks to John Sall, Joseph Morgan, Aurora Tiffany-Davis and Julian Parris for giving us a preview of their JMP Discovery keynote this Thursday! If you missed the meeting and would like to watch the recording, Robin Betters kindly shared the link here: https://jmp.zoom.us/rec/share/aUafxsqvZo9HvTM_SIUgOJ4wwJhCBesHMeQvNdefd1wWYYoM1vg7-E9zQwMmtr2C.UFi0FFlO3DCOVcZf (password to watch is sUJ.F9rP).
Thanks to Tonya Mauldin for sharing the Beta/Crash/Telemetry cases for this week. Crashes are selected.

JMP Development Updates
Data Discovery
- Dan S: Session file work to support platforms with multiple tables and skip launcher windows. AppBuilder/Dashboard Builder will also now support multi-table platforms. Fix Tab Page JSL messages to make it easier to launch platforms in tabs. New JSL option to set minimum truncated title width for tab pages. Fix behavior of embedded launch dialogs to avoid closing a user-defined window.
- Evan: Avoiding shared_ptr locking while asking for the EvalContext data table. This was a big bottleneck preventing efficient multithreading of JSL formulas. Further work on multithreading formulas. Minor JMP search work. Investigating hang on JMPRunner with John Schroedl. Writing JSL script static inspection/rewriting library to allow some more code sharing.
- Ernest: Usability testing prep. 17.1 fixes. Preference work to detect non-default settings. NVIdia performance investigation.
- Dave B: Adding Excel specific options for MFI and looking into some problems with the image test baselines with Evan and John.
DOE
- Peng: Working on Response & Factor List prototypes for DOE. There is one desired behavior which is not available in the existing platforms. And I am experimenting to see whether I can come up with something. Other than that, I continued doing research with Bill Meeker, and worked on fitting a challenging data from the field using the new repeated measures degradation.
- Caleb: Addressing duplicate factor name tickets for DOE platforms. I also pushed some additional fixes for N Choose K to strengthen the code (thanks Xan for the help!) and ensure correct values in extreme cases.
- Ryan L: Working on a revision for a statistical engineering case study paper.
Host
- Daniel Powell: Working on further improvements to the AWS Tech Support site as well as an integration between JMP’s DataTable and Python Pandas’ DataFrame.
HTML5
- John Powell: Came back from a two week vacation on Thursday and caught up on what I missed. Met with Christine B., Xan, and Experis(an IT Sourcing company) to discuss hiring C++ candidates as “Contract to Perm”. Discussed web-based distribution platform prototype with Michael G. and Justin C. Investigated a JMP Live 18.0 when publishing from Mac bug (JMP-13802) that’s caused by a bad HTML5 template (JMPHTML-1800). Started planning for a meeting with Paul M. about Recruitment and Retention.
- Paul Spychala: This week was the week for 18.0 HTML Profiler work. We now have HTML Confidence Intervals for Standard Least Squares platform in FitModel (JMPHTML-1743). We also have HTML Confidence Intervals for the standalone Profiler (JMPHTML-1789). We added HTML Profilers for the Fit Group platform (JMPHTML-802) and added a few more Math Operations (Design Last, H Direct Product) to HTML.
JMP Live
- Aurora: 18.0: Allow admins to search for user by login name (not just display name). Use database transactions more consistently (ongoing effort). A few small bug fixes. Miscellaneous: Start thinking about a plan for moving JMP Live from Perforce to Git. Took a small intro to Docker class. Rehearsal for Discovery.
Statistics
- Jianfeng: Completed the one-tailed Dunnett test requested by customers (JMP-7951). David Elsheimer has verified the implantation. Currently working on another feature request from customers to add the Joncheere-Terpsta test to both Contingency and Oneway platforms (JMP-7940). I have added it to the Contingency platform and will add it to Oneway soon. Here is a peek at the output of this test.
- Laura C-S: Finished adding new shortcut for specifying 1-indicator latent variables when an estimate of error variance is available. This shortcut should be helpful for those looking to fit linear Measurement Error Models. I had two great email exchanges with professors that are a big deal in SEM. One, Ken Bollen (wrote the most important SEM book in existence), agreed to attend Discovery and the other, Paul Allison (owns Stat Horizons), is assessing JMP’s SEM platform for a potential future course offering. These news items made my day!!
- John Sall: Reported a thread-safety crash in Response Screening, calling getContColorTheme from Term::doScale in threads, ultimately fixed by Evan McCorkle for 17.1. (JMP-14011) Fixed cases where floating-point noise was causing non-zero slope estimates that should have been zero. (JMP-13998) Meet with Chris, Luciano, and Russ about fitting extremely large mixed models for Genetics.
Stat Documentation
- Michael C: Finished updating the Numerical Accuracy white paper for 17.0; started updating the documentation for 17.1.
- Karen: Started a project where I’ll be updating the table scripts in DOE sample data tables.
Stat Testing
- Mark: Converted usability test script for Easy DOE from journal format to a scripted application. Analyze usability test data. Answer questions posted in JMP Community.
- Jacob: Investigating unit test failures. Testing pending changes to DO. Testing the performance of Sort and Summary when the List Check column property is applied.
- Tonya: Testing the new Cusum dialog for invalid parameters. Testing the ExGaussian distribution. Bug verification.
Technical Support
- Duane: TS remains busy! We are still involved in numerous projects, including My JMP and My JMP ID, JMP Notes migration to the Community, Support site migration to the Community, JMP Trial email updates, JMP SOE updates (for JMP 17), and various others. It is definitely not dull around here! In any event, below is a plot of our case activity.

Email thread discussion on whether JMP Live can be included in initial launch of My JMP.

Note from Shannon
I’m told the idea that you can’t wear white after Labor Day is long outdated. Whew! Now I don’t have to think about it too hard. Hope you all have a great long weekend!
