Fun challenge: FIFA World Cup Qatar & JMPHi SE's,
Some of you know something about the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 that is coming up.
MJ had this fantastic idea to create something in JMP that we can promote on social media as a run-up to the event and hopefully draw some eyes to JMP simultaneously.
If this sounds fun, read on.
I’ve pulled down some raw ranking data from our friends at https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/.
I cannot attest to the usefulness of this data for various reasons, but perhaps chief among them is I don’t know much about soccer.
If someone wants to create some fun visualizations and a short blog post, I’m happy to play editor for you.
It would be cool if it could incorporate JMP Live in some way and share your analysis through social media during November.
This is hopefully a fun project.
Chuck
Re: Fun challenge: FIFA World Cup Qatar & JMPI would think a few good predictors could be recent success in regional tournaments (Copa America, Euro Cup, etc.), as well as strength of schedule in the Group Stages.
For example, Argentina just won the Copa America, so they're coming in hot. But they have Mexico and Poland in their Group stage, which should make for some tough games.
If they slip up and finish second in the group, they could be in for an extra tough game against a group winner.
Just my two cents...I can't wait to see what awesome analyses come out of this!
P.S. With my beloved Italians missing out on the WC (again), I must say Vamos Argentina!
Re: Fun challenge: FIFA World Cup Qatar & JMPI think the rankings are bit out of date. It has been a while that Germany was No. 3.

Re: Fun challenge: FIFA World Cup Qatar & JMPThis is a fun idea, but we need to be careful not to violate FIFA brand guidelines for "ambush marketing": https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/commercial/fifa-marketing/brand-protection
For example, with the Olympics, only sponsors are allowed to use Olympic-related terms (even on social). If this is something you want to pursue, we should talk to people more knowledgable about this than I am (legal, SAS social media)...
Re: Fun challenge: FIFA World Cup Qatar & JMPThanks Jessica. Good point. It sounds like we could talk about soccer statistics without mentioning any particular upcoming events by name or any huge sponsoring organization. Sort of like, "it sure seems like soccer is in the air these days...and here are some cool visualizations of the data"... ?
