I had a request from a customer to use JMP to make Sunburst plots. Has anyone ever run across this before? I attached an example he was using in for a different way to look at an Org. Chart. Any thoughts on this would be apperciated.
You can do something similar with pie charts in graph builder. I think it requires a grouping of some kind. I've also seen them called rooster coxcomb plots.
Pete,
Sunburst plots are what we call ring plots. Here is an example with Big ClassRing Plot or Sunburst Plot
You might get a better result with smaller areas using the coxcomb plot aka exploded pie chart.
Coxcomb Plot AKA Exploded Pie Chart
Does this get you close?
Thanks Stan and Mike,
That is sort of similar to what he was after, but he was thinking something like multiple layers of something like an organization chart. If we have 4 VPs that have 2-3 division managers reporting to them, and each of those divisions managers has 5-10 people working for them. The ring plot and coxcomb don't seem to show subslices of the slice of pie. If that makes any sense.
Yes I guess. Perhaps another visual might be more appropriate; like a parallel plot.department relationships
I remembered where I've seen these before! Daisy Disk (a macOS app uses them for visualizing file size in a directory.) I've always thought they are a great visualization. We could do some pretty heady dashboards with these.
Here's some info on how they are laid out: link. They have more in common with Tree maps than pie charts. I'd actually love to see these incorporated into graph builder or maybe hierarchical clustering (another way of looking at the dendrogram - though you'd have to deal with the distance issue).
Maybe we can see if @XanGregg would be interested in these for a later version of JMP.
Maybe not fully aligned to what you are looking for, but Lufthansa has created a custom chart for optimizing their transfer schedule:
