Would love to have a data connector to Presto/Trino database. This is a database used by Seagate. Here is what they asked and why.
Our current problem (which isn’t really JMP’s problem) is that our datasource is a Presto/Trino “distributed query engine” application.
- Presto/Trino had undergone some project ownership/forking issues since spinning off from FaceBook/Meta – I will simply refer to this as ‘Trino’ from here on
- The core Trino interface is HTTP/REST passing JSON
- Language-specific interfaces exist for common languages: perl, python, Java (as jdbc)
- The core Trino project never provided an ODBC interface – that was “left as an exercise for others to complete”
- MSWindows ODBC drivers were created, but ownership of them is unclear:
- I don’t know if there is a fully open-source TRINO/ODBC interface.
Given that the JMP user community is primarily MSWindows (and Mac, but not Linux) users, interfacing JMP to cloud-based data sources means using ODBC and eventually incurring secondary expenses to companies like Magnitude who offer a solution.
JMP has great benefits for MSWindows users, but secondary MSWindows ODBC costs may be enough to push users over to the Linux/OpenSource world (python, R, even Java) where they eliminate secondary costs in exchange for less convenient exploratory data analysis.
