Supercategories should be allowed on table top and outer nests.<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />Currently supercategories only show on first level of the table side.
Re: Supercategories should be allowed on table top and outer nests. You raise some interesting points that raise some interesting questions for me.
One of the philosophies of JMP is that we don't like methods to be ambiguous. In your example of the colors there are lots of ways that one might want to group responses using your Bright, Medium, Dark categories.
For example, you could look at a responses in these two ways:
| Actual response | Response grouping 1 | Response grouping 2 |
|---|
| Red, Orange | Bright, Bright | Bright |
| Red, Orange, Brown | Bright, Bright, Dark | Bright, Dark |
| Red, Orange, Brown, Black | Bright, Bright, Dark, Dark | Bright, Dark |
Response Grouping 1 reduces the possible responses by grouping colors into response categories but still enumerates each response separately. Response Grouping 2 considers each response in a category group as a single response.
We have no way of knowing which way any individual user wants it.
The only way we can be sure that you get exactly what you want is give you tools to create the groupings exactly as you want them. We do that by allowing you to create new columns using the Formula Editor or Recode to create the data the way you want to count it.
A new Formula Editor function in JMP 13 will make working with Multiple Response columns in formulas a bit easier.
For the moment you're right that Recode doesn't work well with Multiple Response columns. I'll see what we can do about that.
Re: Supercategories should be allowed on table top and outer nests.I see how Recode works well with Single Response columns, but trying to use it with Multiple Response columns in order to group responses does not work. You can make Supercategories for these, but then they are not always available in a Categorical Report where you want to use them. The Recode list for this type of column shows the responses already in groups as found in the data rows. You cannot group the Value Label responses into a group chosen at random (i.e., whatever you are trying to set up as a group of like responses).
For example, in this created small sample JMP table, the column Favorite Colors is Multiple Response and has these Value Labels and responses by Respondent.

If I want to make three groups of Color Type: Bright (Red & Orange), Medium (Blue, Green, Purple), and Dark (Brown, Black), I do not see how to handle that in Recode. Can you help me with this?

Re: Supercategories should be allowed on table top and outer nests.Hi Jenny,
I am the tester for Categorical and Jeff asked me to jump in to elaborate on the recode suggestion. First, it might be helpful to note that in some sense the supercategories feature is just a "virtual recode". It doesn't change the values in the data table, but it combines two (or more) categories just like creating a recoded column with those values merged would.
For example, given a Likert-type item with values 1 - 5, you can get a top two box category by combining values '4' and '5' into a supercategory, or you can create a variable in which values '4' and '5' are combined into one value. Unfortunately, it does add an extra step if you're not already doing recoding, but if you need to apply the same recode to many similar columns, that could be automated in JSL.
Does that help at all?

Re: Supercategories should be allowed on table top and outer nests. In general, re-coding data isn't something we, in CMK, typically have to spend time doing . For typical cross-tabbing, our data is usually in pretty good shape when it's received from our external suppliers (typical way we receive data).
With that said, I don't know how I would re-code to emulate a super category. There's already a reason we have a "super category" option (to add or net 2 rows of data together). I would hate to think that I now have to do something different to do a merge like that, just because I want it as a base in my column.
However, I am open to hearing your reco!
Re: Supercategories should be allowed on table top and outer nests.Hi Jenny,
Can you help us understand your hesitation with Recode? Are there things we could do to make Recode easier?

Re: Supercategories should be allowed on table top and outer nests.Do we have an ETA on this fix? This is pretty critical in my book. MOST of the time, if I'm creating a supercategory, it's because I want to use it as a column in my data. Really don't want to train others how to do it by re-coding, that's fairly complicated.
