Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 22, 2022!
This week, we reached our JMP 17.0 Code Freeze milestone. As Jon Weisz and John Sall noted in the mid-year webcast on Thursday morning, the JMP, JMP Pro and JMP Live releases for 17 are a big deal. There is something in there for every customer, from our newest newbie to our most sophisticated long-term user. JMP Clinical will follow a month later with its first ever JMP-only release with improved performance and a much better installation experience. You can review Midyear content on Inside JMP, including this article on 20 Things Learned at Americas Midyear 2022.
Thanks very much to Jim Borek for creating our new release branches and testing various builds post-freeze! Jim says that he very much appreciated the help John Schroedl provided during the transition to using Visual Studio 2022 for JMP 18.0 work on Windows. Jim was very grateful for all the help that John and Michael Hecht provided troubleshooting various build and signing issues encountered during this transition. Thanks, all, for the teamwork! A release border is a comparatively good time for software updates like the VS 2022 migration, but it certainly added some complexities to a process with many moving parts from branches to builds to the configuration of numerous VMs and physical machines.
After automated nightly builds for our three ongoing releases ran successfully yesterday evening, Bob Hickey and Jim turned their attention to finalizing installer and unit test setups for the new releases. Nick Ruva has also been busy today enabling various Jenkins projects for continuous integration and auto integration processes that he set up earlier in the week in anticipation of branching 17.1 and 18.0.
Just a reminder that as we move into this busy period with three branches running simultaneously - we treat these releases differently and the process for pushing code to each one is a bit different. Here’s an overview in case you’re new to the process or have forgotten in the many months where we had only one release to worry about! If you have questions, please let me know. If I don’t know the answer, I will try to find someone who does.
- Stop light: 17.0.
- JMP 17 source code is frozen. Auto-integration from main à 17.0 is disabled.
- If a potential showstopper bug is found that impacts 17.0 source, development directors and product management will scrutinize the problem closely and evaluate its seriousness and potential to delay the release.
- If you think you have found a showstopper issue in 17.0, please discuss it with the appropriate development and testing managers before requesting approval. If together you determine that the problem merits a request for approval, please follow our standard approval process. If an approver has questions about the fix, approvers and the developer will meet to discuss the fix.
- Doc and L10 teams continue to work to finalize 17.0 in anticipation of their own upcoming freeze dates. Testing teams continue verification work.
- Blinking yellow light: 17.1.
- The scope of this release includes bug fixes and some minor features that were not ready or could not be tested in time for 17.0. Developers are required to request and obtain a code review before integrating fixes into the 17.1 track. There is no source auto-integration project for main à17.1 since most changes in main are not destined for the 17.1 branch. We have several months before we get to JMP 17.1 Code Approval Mode.
- Doc and L10N teams will not begin working on 17.1 for some months. We will not begin to run Stringbot on 17.1 until the L10N team has completed all work on 17.0 projects.
- Green light: 18.0.
- Auto-integration from main à 18.0 is turned on for pushes of new features and bug fixes. Developers often push fixes to main and wait for testing to evaluate the fix before considering integration to 17.1. Code reviews by peer developers are always encouraged but are not required at this point in the cycle.
- Doc and L10N teams will not begin working on 18.0 content for many months. We will not run Stringbot on 18.0 until the L10N team determines it is appropriate to do so. The JMP 18 EA program will not begin for ~6 months or so.
While we did not meet this week as a dev group, we will meet for the next two Thursdays (7/28 and 8/4) to hear about what our JMP interns have been up to this summer. I’ll send out the meeting invites early next week with the full schedules. Thanks to our interns for volunteering to share, and thanks to Audrey Shull for coordinating the schedule!
