Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 15, 2022!
Please note that SAS has a 3rd weekend maintenance outage planned for this weekend starting at 5 pm today and running through Sunday.
JMP DevOps has cancelled this weekend’s Stringbot run on main since Stringbot runs that happen during 3rd weekend outages frequently get interrupted by software update cycles and/or reboots. Please expect that other VMs and processes that run continuously this weekend will likely be impacted and the DevOps team will resolve issues as quickly as possible after the outage and involve IT if needed.
Trish has notified me that she will kick off a very early morning Stringbot run on Tuesday and will send out a notice alerting the development group when it starts and has been completed. Please avoid editing files during the Stringbot run to avoid conflicts with the Stringbot process. (Hopefully this will not be an issue since I don’t think approvers would be available so early to approve changes to source code. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes: I know I won’t be!)
JMP Pro 17 and JMP Clinical 17 EA9 installers are now available for early adopters to download. This concludes our work on JMP Pro releases for the JMP 17 EA program. Since JMP Clinical will be released a month later than JMP and JMP Pro, Bob will create a Windows-only refresh of JMP Clinical 17 EA9 in late August using the JMP 17 EA9 executable and updated Clinical script files. This will allow the JMP C team to share a set of updated reports with their EA customers and gather valuable feedback in advance of further updates to be made in JMP Clinical 17.1.
JMP DevOps is preparing for the branching of JMP 17.1/18.0 next week when we hit our Code Freeze milestone at the end of the day on Wednesday July 20th. While much can be done ahead of time so that we are ready to turn on various processes once the branch is created, my teams will likely be continuing their work and doing final testing steps throughout the day on Thursday and Friday. We’ll get everything up and running as quickly as we can for the new releases. We know that many of you already have shelved fixes for 17.1 to push and some people are even looking at early JMP 18 feature possibilities! Remember that we will turn off Auto-integration of JMP source code to the 17.0 branch at JMP 17 Code Freeze. This means that if you encounter a showstopper bug after Code Freeze and you secure the required four approvals to fix it, you will need to make your fix in main (so that it will flow into the 18.0 branch) and you will also need to integrate the fix into both the 17.0 and 18.0 branches. Please contact Jim Borek if you need any assistance, he will be glad to help.
Thanks again to Audrey Shull for hosting this week’s JMP Dev meeting where Mandy Chambers demoed Workflow Builder and she and Ernest answered your burning questions about this popular new feature! If you missed the Workflow Builder demo, you can find a saved copy of the recording here in my public folder: \\d73817\public\ \Dev Meetings\. Also, Mandy shared a version of her demo files that you can COPY from \\jmpsrv01\Users\Chambers\Workflow\Workflow.zip if you’d like to play with them while exploring this new feature. Mandy will also be presenting at JMP Discovery Cary and I know customers will be very interested in this new addition.
Finally, please note that dev meeting recordings are available in Sharepoint via the meeting chat in Teams, if you are on the invite list for the meeting. Here’s what a saved recording looks like in this week’s meeting chat:

If you didn’t attend that session, you can always request access to open the Sharepoint copy of the recording. If you aren’t on the JMP Dev list, and want access before I publish the link to the downloaded recording in the update on Friday, please email or message me on Teams and I will be glad to send a link with the proper permissions. Many people request Sharepoint recording access or email me and of course I always approve and respond to those requests as quickly as I can. I generally don’t include links to the Sharepoint copy in the update; I usually link to downloaded copies of the recordings in my public folder because those are accessible to anyone regardless of meeting attendee status -they do not require any special request/approval cycles. Those links are also more likely to persist over time than those generated by a storage mechanism with a shorter retention policy like Sharepoint, OneDrive, etc.
Over the years as we transitioned from Webex to Teams for dev meetings, and from Stream to Sharepoint as a Teams recording storage mechanism, I’ve gotten burned several times linking to meeting content that I thought was safely saved when it disappeared unexpectedly during an app migration or SAS storage cleanout. Sharepoint in particular has very short default retention intervals for meeting recordings. If I see an email from Sharepoint saying a recording has been deleted, I always restore it and set a longer retention timeframe. I’ll try to remember to link to my shared folder and not to the recording itself going forward so it’s clear that it’s a shared location. Mac and Win users can open it however that works best for them on their system. These recording files are not small so I hate to keep a bunch of duplicate copies around, but I certainly do not want to lose a recording that someone may wish to view in the future.

Data Discovery
- Dave B: Fixed performance problem importing from a google sheet, working on 18/17.1 defects, looking into crosstab copy problem, working on an option to print a table of contents generated from outline boxes, out on vacation next week.
- Dan S: More updates for Easy DOE document save/restore. Fixed issue with axes > 30k pixels. Worked on Modal dialog issue on Mac, deferring to 17.1. Other code reviews and triage.
- Xan: Histogram/Multiple-Response selection issue for 17; axis and spline smoothing items for 18.

DOE
- Peng: Wrote a draft on the current practice of using JMP to analyze fatigue data. The draft is based upon what I learned from Bill Meeker in the past half an year or so. The draft will be used to communicate with Wendy Tseng, who has an interest in learning the subject. Fixed a couple of issues on profiler in Easy DOE. Reviewed, approved, submitted. Close all, except one, open Jira items on the profiler in Easy DOE. Defer the only one to a later release. Respond to questions from tech support and the field on reliability platforms.
- Brad: Reviewing two journal articles on DOE - one is good the other not so much…
Host
- Paul N: Updated copyright information in the Excel Add-in DLLs to use the same string as John Schroedl used for JMP. Still waiting on legal’s response about shortening it. Finished getting a sample program written in Swift translated over to ObjC. The program demonstrates picking objects in 3D using Metal - one of the hurdles that we’ve had in transitioning from OpenGL 1.x to Metal on the Mac. OpenGL 1.x directly supported picking in the OpenGL library. Modern shader-based OpenGL and tools like Metal and Vulkan do not explicitly support picking. My sample program uses ray tracking principles to locate objects in the scene, cast a ray into the scene, and look through the scene objects for an intersection. Now that I have a working example in ObjC, I can begin to implement the technique within JMP.
HTML5
- Praveena: Worked on Supporting sides for Border Box (Have shelved this change for 17.1). Completed the Security Training. Working on improving code coverage – Axis Box component.
- Mayowa: Fixed code coverage issues in continuous integration build, started product security training, working on improving branch coverage for Parallel plot units tests.
- Paul S: Attended JMP Academy and started taking the STIPS courses.
JMP Live
- Aurora: JMP Live 17.0 bug fixes (database migration, personal spaces, publish order of reports). Jira triage. Worked on Discovery Americas talks with Michael Goff and Aaron Andersen.
Statistics
- John Sall: Becoming aware that some users have lots of factors and Design Space Profiler will take forever to handle those cases. Now you are prompted for simulation sample sizes or more than a million and have a progress bar so that you can stop early. (JMP-13364) Fixed a bug in Explore Patterns where an excluded row caused it to miss a run of duplicates across columns. (JMP-13365)
- Laura C-S: Reviewed the SEM documentation, met with Haley to discuss final steps for her summer project, recorded video for promoting Discovery upon Meg’s request.
Stat Documentation
- Karen: Sent a draft of the Easy DOE chapter out for review.

Note from Shannon
Best wishes to Lisa’s pup Stormy who is recovering from a follow-up surgery after a prior operation that repaired luxating patella issues in her knees. Lisa says, “She’s grumpy about her cone but at least she can still get comfortable :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes: “
Like I told Lisa today, coincidentally, my dog Stormy also had this same surgery done on his knee when he was a pup with similar issues. He lived to the ripe old age of 14 with no more knee issues. Hopefully Lisa’s Stormy-girl will get through the healing process quickly and be able to bound and run again pain-free!
