How JMP is used in the Oil & Gas industry
There are approximately 1.45 billion cars, trucks and buses on Earth as of 2022. Without even factoring in manufacturers, machines, and other forms of transportation (ie airplanes, etc.) the demand for oil and gas is - well, high.

While oil and gas does generate business revenue, it is not a highly advertised industry for us. However, JMP is used in a number of organizations involved in drilling, production, and refining for the industry.
Who uses JMP in this industry?
- Component Test Engineers as they improve the technology within their material and their tools.
- Quality control, continuous improvement, and operations roles in oil & gas production.
- Geologists so they can understand the effects on production performance.
What problems do these JMP users have?
Scientists and geologists need to be able to forecast and maximize well production to meet demand, as well as reduce the time it takes to achieve the product. Perhaps, they need to test new techniques or learn what could be benefited from a particular sample of a well.
They need answers to questions like, “How can we build an analytical drilling strategy to improve efficiency and drive out unnecessary costs?” or “How can we tap into advanced machine learning algorithms to understand well behavior under varying conditions?”
What do they use JMP for?
Oil and Gas companies use JMP in a few areas of their production like drilling, exploration, refining, and chemical production. One example of this is creating life distributions and reliability block diagrams that aim to reduce the drill downtime. In chemical production JMP helps to analyze spectral data which is usually highly dimensional and riddled with correlation.
Do we have any good customer stories?
There is a lack of customer stories for Oil and Gas, specifically. However, there is a story on Brazca that talks about mining and geology that is related. https://www.jmp.com/en_us/customer-stories/brazca.html
Do we have good demo material?
Within the technical reference library, there are resources highlighting Oil Field Reclamation, Gasoline Octane NIR analysis, and Unplanned Maintenance. These utilize a number of different parts of JMP not limited to Distributions, Graph Builder, Neural Nets, Decisions trees, to name a few. They can be found below.
