Welcome to the JMP Development Update for July 8, 2022!
Congratulations are in order for John Powell, who is celebrating his 10th anniversary with JMP next week. Brian relayed some information about John’s history and tenure with us: “John Powell started at JMP 10 years ago. He had previous jobs at Corel, of drawing package and office application fame, and ARA, a company that was home to some of our other staff. John joined JMP to work on HTML5, where he has been ever since. He now manages that group. John’s first big project was writing the Bubble Plot platform for HMLT5, to replace the Flash version that we had shipped previously. John was also part of the original JMP Live team, where he worked on local data filters, column switchers, and much of the communication between JMP and JMP Live. John has done an outstanding job developing for and leading HTML5. We are grateful for his contributions, and what an easy person he is to work with.” I heartily agree, John is wonderful to work with and we are so glad he is a part of the JMP team. Congratulations, John!
A big thank you goes out to Ryan Parker for presenting about enhancements in Functional Data Explorer, showcasing the new Wavelet basis function models. Ryan has worked this release with collaborating developer Clay Barker to add support tools to make it easier to analyze spectral data, the wavelet models to fit data with sharp peaks, and some new data pre-processing steps. If you missed the meeting, you can find a link to a downloaded copy of the recording here.
A reminder that JMP 17 EA9 freezes at the end of the day today. Please remember to update your feature pages, and let Mia Stephens know if there’s anything you want to highlight for EA9. EA9 will be our last release for JMP 17, and customers will be able to get the almost-final version of JMP 17 (excepting those few final fixes going in in the next few weeks) now instead of waiting for the full release. We still expect to get EA feedback from these customers, though it may slow down. Thank you as always to Tonya Mauldin and Nicole Jones for managing the EA feedback as it comes in.
Work continues on JMP 17 as we move towards our Code Freeze milestone on 7/20/22. You all know we are in Code Approval mode now. Developers who are pushing changes to the main branch in Perforce continue to create reviews in Swarm or hold in-person sessions to review proposed changes, then submit an approval request to the JMP Approvers list prior to pushing changes. Changes that do not need to be reviewed or approved include adding/editing code comments, string edits, adding/editing scripting index examples, and updates for 3rd party libraries. Thank you to new developer Paul Spychala for creating a page documenting the Code Approval mode process for those going through it the first time (or those needing a reminder).
Quick reminder about strings: any strings added now will not be translated until 17.1. And any string edited now will cause translations to be out of sync with English, if the string was already translated, until 17.1 handoff. If it was out for translation for the first time when the edit is made, the translations will not be accepted when they come back since the source no longer matches. In that case, the string will go out for translation in 17.1.
Note from Mia - Thanks to everyone who has recorded JMP 17 lightning talks for the Asia Pacific Discovery conferences. Jeff Hudgins shared that they’re coming out great, and they’ll be great assets for our global teams! Technical Enablement will also use the videos with the JMP 17 field technical training, so we’ll get a lot of mileage out of them.
JMP Development Updates
Statistics
- John Sall: Worked on Design Space profiler X Spec Limits (JMP-13269, JMP-13270), Model Screening profit matrix processing (JMP-13202), Explore Outliers for constants (JMP-7465), Explore Patterns for row count (JMP-7465) and tested Easy DOE changes.
DOE and Reliability
- Caleb: Working on some research papers. One will be resubmitted soon and the other is nearing completion. I’ve also been helping Joseph with EasyDOE work where I can.
- A note of interest from John Sall: The biggest change recently for Easy DOE was actually a change in GenReg to use small-sample-adjusted confidence limits for normally-distributed responses. Until now, it was using a normal distribution for the confidence interval, which is fine when there is more than 20 or 30 rows of data, but for small DOE designs, there may be only 8 runs with 3 factors and an intercept, for which the better confidence interval needs to use the Student's t, which is much wider for this case of 4 degrees of freedom for error, i.e. the red lines in this graph, rather than the blue lines. An example script is attached.

Stat Testing & Stat Documentation
- Mark: Working with Brad and Joseph on design issues of Easy DOE. Working with Jacob and Ryan to test Easy DOE. Assisting Functional UI/UX and UX Development Process workstreams. Responded to EA 8 feedback from Martin Demel about Easy DOE. Recorded presentation for JMP Discovery Summit Americas with Jianfeng. Answered questions in JMP Community.
- Tonya: Reviewed the New Features doc and the Type 1 Gauge documentation. Bug verification. Preference testing of my platforms.
- Jacob: Testing Easy DOE, writing unit tests for the Predict tab, and verifying Jira tickets
- Karen: Working on DOE chapters.
Host
- Paul N: (1) Updated libcurl due to BlackDuck reported vulnerabilities. The prior version was released May 11, 2022. Vulnerabilities had been known for at least a month. We are now using libcurl (7.84.0), released June 27, 2022. The updated libcurl has been part of the Windows build since Tuesday night’s build. JMP on macOS utilizes the macOS systems version of libcurl. (2) Watched and completed all three of the Product Security Level 1 training courses. (3) Worked with Brian, Bryan and SAS IT on the Spring Framework 3.2.18 vulnerabilities, and determining that JMP will need a security exception to ship the SAS jars. As SAS will not be shipping an updated until at least 2 months after JMP 17.0 ships. We will be needing to migrate to the 5.2.x Spring Framework and updated SAS jars in 17.1
- John Schroedl: Code reviews and some late 17.0 icon work. We now have telemetry.jmp.com set up on an AWS server and had the first successful upload from a modified JMP build. Still a long way to go but this was a good milestone.
